At 24 Kaila thought she had it all. She had a great boyfriend she had moved out of town with him and she lived with him for a few months and thing had went from great to sour quickly. Nate had started partying and hanging out with multiple women and drinking and she had enough of it after he had forgotten about her birthday a few weeks ago.

She moved back into her old place in town and it felt amazing to be back. She was glad to be reunited with some friends and even found a job as a receptionist after a few weeks back. She had suddenly began to feel ill and made an appointment with the town doctor and was surprised to find out she was pregnant. She was initially upset because it was Nates and she figured she should tell him but he instantly denied it hanged up on her. She was really upset and decided to reach out to her good friend and neighbor to talk with him.

It had been a long day at work and Alex had finally arrived back at his apartment. As he unlocked the door and stepped inside, he saw the light on his answering machine blinking.

"Why would someone call my old landline? I haven't used that for almost a year now."

He only had the line because it came with the apartment and he didn't want to go to the hassle of talking the manager into removing it. The apartment complex paid for it anyway so he didn't care.

Moving across the room he pressed play and smiled at what he heard.

"Kaila... it's been a long time. I wonder how you're doing. Is it too late to call her?"

Looking at the clock on the wall he saw it was getting late but probably still early enough that she would still be awake. Calling the number provided, he waited for an answer.

"Kaila? Hey... it's Alex. I'm glad I got your call. It's been a long time. How are you?"

Kaila chuckled and sniffles "Oh umm hey Alex I'm fine I guess I'm back in town now and your the only one I'm close to and I needed someone to talk to. Can you come over I baked"she said hoping he would.

Seeing him would be the best thing that has happened to over her weeks here and she'd be relieved to see an old friend. Alex had been friends with her since preschool and being in a small town everyone knew everyone.

She had went to college with him and he had even helped her pack for her move out of the town. Now she was back and she wondered how he would handle the news.

As he listened to her voice, Alex could swear he could hear her sniffling. Was she crying?

"Yeah hon, I'll be right over. You say you're back so I'm going to assume you're back in your old apartment. Let me get changed into something a little more casual and I'll be right over."

He paused and smiled.

"I missed you."

Hanging up, he stripped off his dress shirt and headed into the bedroom to change. Grabbing a thick blue shirt and some soft jeans he quickly changed then grabbed his keys and headed out the door, locking it behind him.

As he stepped out into the chilly night air, he looked across the apartment complex at the ones on the far side. Her light was on and he could see what he guessed was her shadow pacing back and forth in front of the window.

"It'll be nice to see her again."

Stepping onto one of the walkways he carefully made his way across the complex and up the stairs to her apartment. Taking a deep breath he knocked on the door and waited.

Kaila smiled when he said 'I missed you"before hanging up. She had missed Alex a lot as well in fact one of her hardest things was losing touch with him over the few months she had been away.

She plated the cookies she baked for them and put on some coffee in case he wanted some. She had been crying all afternoon still baffled that Nate hadn't wanted any part of their child's life. She had tried calling back and email but he hadn't responded back and now she was going to go through this alone.

She changed into something a bit more comfortable and washed her face to hide evidence of her crying and she heard a knock at the door opening it and smiled instantly wrapping her arms around him and saying "I've missed you Alex you have no idea" she smiled

The hug was like slipping back in time. It was warm and familiar and felt so good.

"I missed you so much Kaila. I never understood why she moved away or what you saw in that guy you were seeing. I'm just glad you're back now."

Smiling down at her he placed a kiss on her hair and breathed in her scent - jasmine and honeysuckle. Snorting softly he grinned.

"I see you still wear that perfume I found you while on vacation."

He tightened his hold on her and walked her backwards into her apartment like the way they used to, shutting the door with his hip as he looked down at her smiling.

Kaila grinned and said "Of course I do Alex it's the best.. I had to order more of it and I even bought a shampoo and conditioner with it". She giggled

It felt good to be wrapped in his arms again it felt just like it did months ago when she had to leave. She smiled smelling the pine scented soap and sandalwood cream she bought him before she left and looked up smelling his neck as he held her. "You smell good too.Your wearing the stuff I bought you when I left right?"she said as they walked over to the couch

She put the pot of coffee and a cup for him as they sat and decided she'd have water with her because just about anything she loved made her nauseous.
She smiled saying "I baked our favorite cookies A and made coffee in case you were hungry plus I remember how much you like them. How have you been?"she said

Alex smiled when she sniffed him and nodded at her comment.

"Of course. I love smelling the way you like me to."

As they sat down he watched as she showed him the cookies and coffee. Taking a couple, he nibbled on one and smiled.

"Still the best. Thank you hon."

Looking at her he noticed she was only drinking water and wondered what was going on. Deciding to get more comfortable, he reached an arm out and placed it around her, pulling her closer so they could snuggle.

"I'm doing good. Got a nice job now and I'm making good money.. but I think there's more going on here than just catching up. So sweetie. You want to tell me why you've been crying?"

Kaila smiled glad he was doing good. She snuggled back against him relaxing a bit. Then he pointed out that she was crying and she sighed. She should have figured if anyone could tell she was upset it would have been Alex. She stayed silent for a bit and reached out holding his hand.


"A.. I honestly was thinking of how stupid I've been this past year. Dropping everything for love..leaving this place which is still awesome after being gone so long and then lastly moving in with Nate. Worst...mistake..ever...I should have listened to you Alex and I seriously regret I ever met him. He was great at first but the deeper we got the more of an ass Nate became"she said tearing up remembering how she felt

"I'd just like to apologize before I tell you anything else ok?"

As he listened, Alex pulled her closer and kissed her hair once more.

"We all make mistakes. There's nothing to apologize for. You were in love and when people are in love they do things that others might not like. It's just how things are."

Feeling her trembling some he lifted her up and slid his legs onto the couch, settling her back down on top of him, cuddling like they used to when they would watch movies.

"So don't ever feel like you need to apologize... because you know that no matter what happens, you'll always have me. Now.. what's making you cry?"

Kaila sniffled into his chest as tears slowly began to roll down her cheeks. She sobbed softly relaxing this arms as he held her like he did when they watched movies or when he carried her to bed when she was too tired.

She gazed up at him and said "A I'm a month pregnant..I just found out this morning I had no idea I was. I thought I missed a period because of the stress I've been going through with Nate but it turns out I was expecting and to make things even worse Nates denying it and saying he's not raising it because he doesn't want kids. He told me to get rid of it Alex.."she said crying more

The news shocked him. Pregnant? His little Kaila was pregnant.

"What are you going to do about it? Do you want to do like he said and get rid of it or do you want to keep it and be a Mommy?"

Holding her close Alex nuzzled her hair lovingly. His Kaila... a mother... and since when had she been his? He pondered that as she cried, then looked down at her.

"Kaila... if you want to keep your baby... um.. I'd like to help."

Kaila said "I want to keep the baby Alex... I mean I'm scared but I want to be a mother to the baby and that's what upsets me the most I think that when I found out I had a life inside of me that anything could take it away from me."

She felt safe as he cuddled with her and a bit tired after her stress today she looked up and said "Alex..your so sweet hun.. I'd love to have your help of course but are you positive you want to? I know that you are busy with work sometimes and I don't want you to feel forced to help me because I'm your friend and you feel bad" she said softly

Looking down at her he smiled.

"I'm sure. I really want to be a part of all of this."

Smiling while looking into her eyes he felt his head jump and old feelings he never told her about came rushing back.

"There's something I never told you before... something I should have but you were busy."

Swallowing nervously Alex grins then leans his head down closer to hers and kisses her lips gently.

"I've loved you for years and would love to help you raise your baby."

Kaila looked up at him shocked but not too shocked by what he had told her. It was obvious that they cared deeply for each other and that they loved one another she just thought that they knew but decided to keep it to themselves because they didn't want to harm their friendship.

She touched his lips gently and smiled leaning in and giving him a soft kiss in return and then looked at him seriously "I love you too Alex...Your the only person that has been in my life that I could ever go to and you always make me feel better about myself and my decisions. You were there when my family died in the plane crash. I want to take things slowly because I don't want to lose you as a friend. Your my rock and I would be honored to have you help me raise the baby Alex "

A wave of relief washed through Alex as he heard her words. She loved him back.

"I understand. Slow is good... this way we can get into things at our own pace and not jump to something right away that might make things bad later."

Grinning he reached a hand up to stroke her hair.

"Since we live in the same complex, seeing each other won't be a problem and you can always tell when I'm home. Won't have to worry where I am."

He laughed softly and stared at her beautiful eyes.

"Plus taking things slow lets us learn more of the things we usually only share with dates... well most of us, miss likes to talk about her sex life when tipsy."

Kaila laughed at him slapping his chest playfully and blushed knowing he was joking but not sure " hey do I really spill my sex secrets when I'm drunk Alex?"she smirked "cause I know of a few things you do when you are drunk as well that are pretty memorable too" she smirked

Alex laughed and nodded.

"Well it was just the one time but yeah. You remember Angela's birthday party? You drank too much and Angela's boyfriend Paul called me to come pick you up. Well the whole time driving you home you were very flirty and handsy. You kept stroking my arm and my leg while talking about every hot guy you saw that night."

He smirked remembering.

"When I got you inside you were a little playful too. You demanded that I help you get changed and pouted when I tried to back out. Seeing that face melted me, but I was a good boy... I only helped you down to your bra and panties then got you into your bed."

Alex blushed a little remembering when she tried to strip down more but he had managed to pull her blanket up before she went too far.

"The whole time though you were talking about the guys there and comparing them to the last time you had sex. You were very... descriptive. I knew that you didn't know what you were saying so I just kissed you on your nose and headed back to my apartment."

Kaila smiled thankful he'd been a good friend and put her to bed right away and she kissed him on the cheek"thank go your amazing friend Alex last time we got trashed at your place I kind of joined you in drunken tactics"she giggled "we had a few duets of living on a prayer, like a Virgin and slim shady" she laughed "and might I say your pretty good at rapping"she smirked at him.

"Do you remember the time on our senior trip in high school when we went to the ranch and you had a fight with the inappropriate ranch hand and you told the group leader it was a minor argument. I could tell how much you cared for me even then and I thought it was sweet of you to defend me even though we both got detention for causing ruckus"she laughed mimicking their old gym teacher.

Alex laughed remembering those times and nodded when she mentioned the fight.

"Of course, got to protect my Kaila..."

He smiled, not noticing saying 'my Kaila' out loud.

"No guy does what that guy did... or says the things he said without being punched for it. I would have done more, but they stopped me..."

Growing quiet, he sobered a little.

"Especially with what he said when we were leaving. You were ahead of me, so you couldn't hear him, but he implied he was going to track you down and get what he wanted. I made it known to him that if he ever thought about doing that... they wouldn't find his body."

His eyes were dark remembering but lightened moments later.

"I kneed him in his junk and told your dad and the police once we got back to school. Your dad went ballistic and sure enough, the guy was picked up a week later trying to rape a woman at a bar downtown. I'm just glad I was able to help stop him cause even then, you were too important to me..."

Kaila stroked his chest and kissed him softly. She was glad he had been there to Always protect her even from herself at times and especially with the crude rancher who was way to touchy-feely for her on their trip and she had asked him to stop uncomfortable with the man and thankfully Alex and another kid had witnessed his actions that they didn't get in much trouble.

She smiled against his lips and whispered "again thank you Alex God knows how lucky I am they caught the man and that my dad hadn't found him first " she chuckled remembering how much her family had gotten along with Alex. It was sad that they could not be here to see the baby or Alex and herself raise it. She sighed and relaxed in his arms yawning slightly" she said softly "I miss them A"

"I miss them too sweetie. Your mom was almost like my own and your dad always liked me."

Alex smiled and snuggled her closer. He'd been a part of her life since they were kids and when his parents split up, Kaila's family had taken him in... so to speak. His mom had run off with some guy she'd met and his dad had given up and become a drunk. Kaila's family had been the only family he'd had.

"Did you know your mom tried to set us up once? It was back when you were dating Brent. She didn't like him and commented on that to me a dozen times when you'd be out on dates with him. She kept trying to get me to ask you out..."

Alex smiled a little sadly at that.

"Wish I had back then, but I guess I was scared something bad would happen and you wouldn't like me anymore."

As he remembered things, he played with her hair and smiled.

"Even as a kid, you were still the one constant in my life. If I'd ever have lost that... well, I don't think life would have been that important to me."

Looking at her he smiled and kissed her again.

"Thankfully we're together now."

Kaila smiled and said " Thankfully we are Alex. I have a feeling my parents would approve of this its just sad they couldn't see this.. But i guess that my parents and Kai( her twin brother)are watching over us in some way". She said sadly.

She hadn't known mom tried setting them up and she smiled at that . Her mother had loved the idea of them being together and she had always dropped hints at it but her father didn't want her dating so young and she recalled the comment she made that chilled her bones "well when do you want them to date Kane?when I'm dead?" She teared up and chuckled wishing her mother hadn't so true about that

"I couldn't be happier now that we're together "she smiled and said " You want to go out and celebrate with me A?"

"Sounds like a good idea to me. What would you like to do and do we need to change clothes?"

Smiling at her he runs his fingers through her hair and sighs happily. After loving her for years, Alex was finally getting his chance to be happy.

"I bet you wouldn't need to change though, you always look so beautiful."

Kaila smiled at him and said "I'm fine with anything you wear your perfect enough " she grinned.

" I'm just craving a shake really badly.. She smiled and said " you want to go to the old diner we always went to after class.? One of their neapolitan shakes really sounds incredible and some hula fries" she said rubbing her stomach
