"John Peel OBE, legendary Radio 1 and Radio 4 presenter, has died suddenly on holiday in Peru." BBC - Radio 1 News

I was very sad to hear this, while listening to the radio as I drove home this afternoon. He was one of those rare "British Institutions" and will be greatly missed by both those in the music industry and fans alike.

RIP John. :rose:

Indeed.

Saw the news on the internet whilst at work. Very sad. So many memories. He was the voice of my teenage years, Radio Caroline the first of the pirate pop radio stations.

The fact that he became so much a part of the music institution, an instantly recognised voice, and continued to be beloved of music lovers of all generations over his 40 years with BBC radio, speaks volumes about the enduring and endearing character of the man.

He made me laugh, sometimes uproariously with his dead pan delivery in interviews, and recently in the 'Grumpy Old Men' tv series.

Your presence will be much missed John, but your memory, your passion and your soul will live on.

John was a legend in radio, in the true sense of the word. He never gave the impression that he was more important than the music - he was just a facilitator bringing it to you.

He particularly impressed me on Radio 4, where he would interview people on the most deeply personal subjects with a courteous civility, humanity and compassion that EVERY interviewer in broadcasting could learn from.

Like all great broadcasters (Wogan, etc) he made it seem so easy you wondered why you couldn't do it, and he came across as someone you'd be happy to know.

"Heaven knows I miss you now you're gone."

RIP John, you are loved.

Go keep Douglas Adams company.
