A giant has fallen

Well, crap! His artwork was incredibly unique; his caricatures second to none. I'm sure the flag's at half mast at St. Trinians. :( RIP Ronald.

It wasn't just the draughtsmanship; it wasn't just the joke.
He imbued a demonstrable reality into whatever he drew.
A local author discovered (somewhat late) that his Dad had been a Japanese PoW. Not only that but was the driver for the Chief Executioner.
Searle's drawings of some of the heads, mounted on bamboo poles are frightening in their intensity.
Maybe I'll scan one of them sometime.

As a tribute I wore my schoolgirl outfit all day yesterday

I remember him best for the masterful drawings he did for Tom Lehrer's song collection "Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer with Not Enough Drawings by Ronald Searle." He really got Lehrer's sense of humor.
