A game of cat and… Cat?
By Glad and Eclipse
The bass drove through the room in an endless wall of sound. Barely even heard over the sound of the voices. It was a Friday night and Blood Moon was hopping. Detective Jacob Louis really didn’t want to be here. He preferred Nicholas’s Live after Death across town, but Nicholas had no information that he hadn’t already shared with the former detective. So, Jake was here instead. Trying to not stand out like a sore thumb so he could see if anyone had information on the case.
Jacob was technically no longer a detective. They had yanked his badge when he had come up positive for lycanthropy a number of years ago now. However, the police sometimes still involved him in cases. He was a friendly face on the other side, or so they saw it. He was also still the best preternatural detective in the city, his skills only had gotten better when his own preternatural skills and abilities had manifested after infection. He was just a private investigator now rather than a detective on the force. To be honest Jacob wore many hats. He was the alpha of the city’s panthers, a title he had won a number of years ago now. He was also closely aligned with Nicholas, the local master vampire, master of the city. He was not metaphysically tied to Nicholas, but their friendship was strong.
All of these things, the ties to Nicholas, the fact that he was a panther in werewolf territory, and the fact that most of the nonhumans considered him still a part of the police meant that Jake was pretty well disliked here. It all came down from her, Morgan. The city’s second most powerful vampire, or so the stories went. Other rumors said she was the most powerful but wanted nothing to do with politics. He didn’t know, but knew rather that because of how close he was to Nicholas, none of Morgan’s followers liked him much. He wished he knew more about her. Were the rumors that she was Morgan Le Fay, related to the legend King Arthur actually true, for example. No matter, he wasn’t here to investigate her. He was however, here to talk to her at some point this evening, to get answers. Some bad little vampire was going around murdering people, and the only Vampires not blood oathed to Nicholas in the city belonged to Morgan. Nicholas swore that if any of his people had done it they would have been found and killed by now, but was Morgan as scrupulous as Nicholas? Jacob really didn’t know.
This whole situation was strange. A mysterious woman had come to him to ask him to take on this case that the police had dumped in his lap. He wondered if she had been one of the many strippers in the city, as it was exotic dancers and ladies of the night that seemed to be this killer’s victim profile. Jacob still didn’t know who she had been. It rankled the investigator in him not to know. But to have two sources ask him to take on the case, and to have had someone pay him a lot of money to take on a case that the police had already asked him to investigate, there were too many questions to not pursue the situation.
“What do you want panther scum,” the bartender growled baring his teeth at Jake from across the bar. “You know your kind isn’t welcome here.” Is what he should have said, even though he hadn’t. The teeth gesture looked out of place in his very human looking face. However, even in human form Jake could tell this was one of the wolf pack that frequented Blood Moon.
“If I said I wanted to talk to the boss, what would you say?”
“She don’t want to talk to you.” Big and ugly snarled in response.
“In that case you can get me a coke.” Jake replied with a fake smile that never reached his hazel eyes. This made the bartender glare but he grudgingly filled the glass and slid it over muttering something like lightweight. This comment Jake ignored, he did not intend on dulling his senses in such a place. Couldn’t they play some better music in here at least? Who knew werewolves were into techno anyway? Was this EDM, Hip Hop? He honestly didn’t know he hated it though. He much preferred the rock and metal of Live after Death, but had to deal with this, for now at least. He would wait. If he couldn’t get past big and ugly to see Morgan he could try flashing his badge see if that still meant anything here. He could try to get some woman to dance to see if she knew something. He had options. When in Roam, do as the Romans, he had to start thinking like a roman.
The latest game of Cat and mouse had begun. Funny though, there were no mice in here. Another game of cat and Cat, then?
