1. Did you use the "volunteer editor" program?

2. Did you get back your edited work in under a week or did you have to wait longer?

3. Is it a bad idea to ask the editor to send you a confirmation e-mail whether he/she recieved my story or not?

4. Have you ever been ignored by an editor and had to find another one?

I'm looking for an editor and wanted your thoughts or experiences regarding the above issues before I contact one.

1. Yes

2. Some did and some didn't

3. That'd be up to the individual editor

4. Yes

a better, and probably easier, solution would be to post a query in the Editor's Forum.

1. They never respond
2. Depends on the length of the piece, the editor and how busy he/she is
3. Just trust the email system. The editors have enough to do.
4. Yes. Sometimes my editors have hanged themselves after reading my stuff and I've had to go hunting for a new one.

1. Yes, I did. Lots of times.

2. Mostly under a week.

3. You can if you're hyper-impatient and want to know that they received it. I don't think they'd mind anyway.

4. Yes. When working with Lit's volunteer editor's program, please read the VE's profile carefully. Look at any preferences and reservations they have with regard to editing specific categories. Send a small summary of your story to about 5 VEs and ask them if they're interested / free to edit your story. This way you'll hear back from at least one, hopefully.

Now, better than VEs, post in the Editors forum asking for an editor.

Better than that, look around on the forums, read people, and zero in on people whose work you like. Ask them nicely whether they'll edit. I have found my best editors with this approach.

Good luck. :)

 I'm just having a calm, collected sort of a day. I even offered a critique on the Feedback forum! After months... :D

1. Yes and recommend it highly.
2. Longer, with minimal communication - had computer difficulties I later discovered after having an online friend review my work and submitting it anyway - I had practically rewritten it into a new story during the lapsed time
3. No - as an editor, I always do this. I also try to give an estimate of when I expect to complete the work and contact the writer.
4. Yes - and it caused additional delay but no harm done.

Note: As a writer, I understand the eagerness to have work completed promptly for submission. Try to avoid rewriting during the editing process as I did though. And always self-edit your work first.

As an editor, I realize that it is volunteer and life does sometimes interfere with our best intentions and efforts. However, communication is the KEY above all if you can freely email and keep informed about the process, knowing that your editor is working on it - maybe even sending it to you in parts instead of the entire finished work. Find out how many writers your editor is working with also and what other obligations may be a factor. You may also request references from other writers, always keeping in mind that this is a volunteer program.
