IMO, using the ignore feature on a discussion board tells you alot about a person...It tells me that someone who posts on a discussion board, and uses "ignore", doesn't have the will power or self control to censor themselves as to what he/she reads...By using "ignore" you are saying that without the aid of the computer you are not capable of stopping yourself from clicking on certain peoples topics...

I realize that the "ignore" option has some benefits but the bottom line is that you require this option in order to avoid having to what...?

Look at someones user-name?
Look at the title of someones topic?
Read a reply from someone?
Block someones opinion(s) from your eyes?
Escape from viewing a trolling topic?

IMO, you have a mental disorder if you can't ignore someone or something without needing help via the "ignore" option....This is just the internet and I wonder how you people who depend on the "ignore" feature to assist you on a daily basis deal with stuff that happens in real life...

Do you require the services of someone or something 24/7 to help you to ignore or avoid certain things such as...

Don't read that book!
Don't watch that commercial!
Don't listen to that song!
Don't see that movie!
Don't eat that!

My point being...

If you can't restrain yourself from undesirable Lit. members, their topics, or their opinions, without using the "ignore" option then how on earth do you manage in real life when it comes to filtering out stuff...IMO, there is something wrong with a person who needs help to ignore something, especialy when it comes to posting on a discussion board or surfing the internet...

Just for the record, I agree. Ignoring someone at Lit seems bizarre to me.

I have used the ignore option from time to time.

Frankly, I don't come to lit to get pissed off or let someone else get on my nerves. I am here to relax and find some entertainment.

Therefore, if a particular poster is repeatedly writing things that anger or frustrate me, I will use the Ignore option for a few days until I am back into a mental space where I can ignore them sans technology.

And yeah, it usually has something to do with PMS as well.

:D

My beef is using the ignore option and then starting threads about who you have on ignore. That is just plain silly.

I use the ignore function as a reminder that I have disliked a person's posts consistently in the past. Sometimes I read the posts, anyways.

I suspect you'd be surprised at who I ignore. Some people are completely inoffensive, but idiots nonetheless.

*chucking at giraffe*

Yep!

It is usually the dumbasses who get the privilege of being ignored by me.

Oops!

I bet giraffe can't read this.

(Got me on ignore, do ya?)

:D

I'm trying to ignore KID ROCK1's ignorance about the value of the Ignore option.

Please ignore me.

I use ignore on people with multicolored posting habits.

Personal safety, you understand.

MissTaken made a very good observation that I didn't think of...

Posting a topic that tells people they are on ignore doesn't make any sense...That kinda ranks up there with the "I Quit" topics that thankfully have been fewer and farther between...

By the way,

I have had enough.

I quit

until tomorrow.

Something else to ponder...

Agree or disagree with the following...

IMO, in order for someone or something to become so offensive or annoying that you are compelled to execute the "ignore" feature then you would have to be subjected to such persons annoying or offensive topics at a high level...Therefore if you spend enough or too much time each day posting here at Lit. then you will be subjected to higher amounts of such annoying topics or replies by a person who you consider to be a troll, or an offensive member...

To simplify my comment think about this...If you only got to view the sun for 1 hour a day then you would love that hour of sunshine...If you had to spend 18 hours a day, everyday, in the sun, then you would likely get annoyed by the sun...The same logic applies to Lit. and the need to "ignore" people...If you only spend about an hour a day posting and reading then you are far less likely to be annoyed by anyone...If you are here 8 hours a day posting and reading then you will likely get agitated, annoyed, or offended, alot more easily than those who "drop by" for a quick daily visit to see whats going on...

Solution...

IMO, if you allow people who post to get on your nerves so bad that you can't control yourself and have to "ignore" someone then maybe, just maybe, you spend way too much time reading and posting at this board everyday...

Its kinda like relationships...If you spend too much time with someone then you eventualy get on each others nerves...Relationships and posting here at Lit. have at least one thing in common...No matter how much you love someone or doing something, moderation is the key...Too much of a good thing will turn into a bad thing...

so, what do you do when you're at, for example, a party, talking to a group of people. Then some schmuck shows up at the fringe of the circle and starts spouting nothing productive.

You tell him/her to shut up. You smack them in the head. But they keep jabbering on and on and on.

what do you do? You ignore them and carry on with your conversation.

It's the same here. If you're into an interesting dialogue, you ignore the person who tries to disrupt it. In the interest of maintaining a flow in the dialogue.

No big deal.

Assuming there is alcohol at the party...

Alcohol, for me anyway, reduces my ability to "ignore" someone or something...My tolerance level drops drasticaly after a 6 Pack and i'm alot more likely to physicaly try to stop something or someone that is annoying rather than ignoring such stimulus...Perhaps that means its not a good idea to read or post at this board if you're under the influence...

I see your point tho and its another good analogy about posting at Lit. without needing "ignore" assistance...

haha.

You write as if executing the "ignore" feature was a monumental effort or even socially significant. It takes me all of--I don't know--ten seconds? I'm sure nobody cares, either.

No big deal, is right.

You make a good point that some people have way too much time on their hands, though.

Thanks for the entertainment, KR.

In all honesty...every has made some very good points.

I have been diagnosed with severe depression and when those days come along were my tolerance is low.....obviously i would try to stay away until i felt better.

Here's a bit a reality.....the thing you want to ignore is what that person has done, said or typed.....not who they are. There are some members on Lit who do, what i think to be, really gross and disgusting things but i don't put that person on ignore...there's no point because just when you think that person is gone another one will take there place. I think the most important thing you can do on the internet is to not put to much stock into what is seen on your screen.

Ok, it's well past my bedtime (5:30 am) and I'm rambling...sorry!

What would I do without the example of your marvelous sense of chivalry? I would feel like there was no hope in the world at all. hehe

I don't put people on ignore. I can ignore without a button if I want to. I think most people can but they choose not to make that decision on a post by post basis and just ignore it all.

So what's your prob? Maybe you need to use your ignore button?

And I also think you should avoid alcohol. Sounds like you have a problem with your inhibitions.

There's help, you know.:)

IMOIMOIMO

IMO Kr1 you are using IMO too much. try some synonyms. I think or something else that I can't think of at 6 in the morning when I can't sleep. Oh anyway I am just bustin your chops. I am an insomniac and I dream of being a smart ass. So far my ass is far smarted them my head. but IMO you keep saying IMO over and over and IMO your opinions are not mine. but you make a valid point with this opinion so I guess we have the same opinions on this. And now I'm gonna try and get some sleep before I pass out and never wake up.

  and a:rose: for everyone

I'm not certain about this, but doesn't the ignore feature stop the ignored from sending pm's to you as well? That may be a benefit in some cases.

Although I never have used the option, I think it doesn't say very much about the ndividual, except that tose on the ignored list are not read. The posts are still there just no words.

I wouldn't know much about the "Ignore" feature relating to blocking PM's cuz no-one ever PM's me...I think you can choose to ignore a PM without having to actualy "ignore" someone tho...The entire PM option is another topic for me to address one of these days but right now i'll stick to talking about the rational behind "ignoring" someone on a discussion board...

I'm reminded of a quote I said years ago about "discussion boards" and I think it applies to this topic so here is what I said...

"Whats the point of having a discussion board if we all agreed with each other all the time...Conversation is a by-product of differing opinions...There would be nothing to talk about if we all agreed about everything"...

I've never used the ignore option, and doubt that I ever will.

I have enough will power to simply not click the few that annoy the hell out of me, threads. If they happen to post to one that I'm reading I'll usually skip over what they say, or at the very least skim over it.

I've noticed that a lot of people talk about who they are ignoring and I feel as tho some mostly do this as another way to garner attention. :)
