A change afoot in the Democratic Party

Heather Cox Richardson:

There has been a change afoot in the Democratic Party for a while now as its leaders shift from trying to find common ground with Republicans to standing firmly against MAGAs and articulating their own vision for the United States.

That shift burst dramatically into the open last night when Democratic Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker gave a barn-burning speech to Democrats in New Hampshire. After walking out to the American Authors song “Go Big or Go Home,” Pritzker urged Democrats to stop listening to “do-nothing political types” who are calling for caution at a time when Americans are demanding urgent action, and to “fight—EVERYWHERE AND ALL AT ONCE.”

Pritzker highlighted three ordinary Americans who are opposing the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” by building communities to protest, hanging an upside-down flag on the face of Yosemite National Park’s famous cliff El Capitan, and welcoming Vice President J.D. Vance to Sugarbush Resort in Vermont with a snow report calling attention to the administration’s attacks on veterans, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ Americans, immigrant workers, and people of color. He urged Democrats to lead with the same passion.

He listed the positions on which he wants Democrats to stand firm, beginning: “It’s wrong to snatch a person off the street and ship them to a foreign gulag with no chance to defend themselves in a court of law.” This is not about immigration, he said, but about the Constitution. “Standing for the idea that the government doesn’t have the right to kidnap you without due process is arguably the MOST EFFECTIVE CAMPAIGN SLOGAN IN HISTORY,” he said. “Today, it’s an immigrant with a tattoo. Tomorrow, it’s a citizen whose Facebook post annoys Trump.”

Now, this is pure reaction to what the Admin does. It is not the change the Democratic Party really needs to consistently win after anti-Trump backlash is a thing of the past -- a change to a central emphasis on economic populism, fighting the oligarchy, and flattening the socioeconomic pyramid. As opposed to all that culture-war stuff, on which the liberal side is bound to win in the long run anyway, for generational reasons.

Specifically, they need to say they're going to do something about this.

Dems are finding out they need men, but only have pretend men.
You support a guy who tells everyone that he rules the world and wants to be Pope. But all the world hates him & his supporters and every other country is ripping off uneducated folks living in the backwoods.

Totally not a cult.

Looks like he's goosing her.

She's toast if it becomes widely known that she's trying to work with the Ruler of the World while he's busy cancelling every program aimed at improving the lives of non-billionaires and raising the price of groceries (a old-fashioned word, it means a bag with different things in it).

I have no idea who Democrats will select as their nominee, but Pritzker’s speech and Whitman’s second high profile appearance with President Trump illustrate the degree of division in the party. Pritzker is trying to stake out the far left lane, Whitman is aiming for the more centrist lane. Plenty of others will be jumping in and it’s anyone’s guess where they end up.

Pritzker doubles down on pandering to the base while Whitmer seeks the swing vote. She doesn't have Pritzker's billions from a corporate career and inheritance, so she may be more motivated to extend her political career. I expect Pritzker will faceplant, but Whitmer could make a deal to get a Cabinet position.
