"A" and "An", a silly question...

Forgive me, or this thread, but I have a silly/stupid question. When the next word in a sentence starts with a vowel, aren't you supposed to use "an"? And "A" is only used when the next word is a consonant?

You are absolutely correct.
'An' is supposed to always be used before a word beginning with a vowel and I believe even some words beginning with an 'H'. (an honorary title for example)

right...it's less about the spelling and more about the sound...

Okay. I had a man PM me, who seemed to have that "high and mighty" attitude, tell me that my thread title (in Story Ideas) "An Unique Idea" was wrong.

Actually, that may be one of the exceptions but I think you should just do whatever the hell you like and let the english language evolve to catch up with you later. ;)

Rules is meant to be broken

I'm on your side either way :D

Well, the sound is 'yoo-neek'. So he is actually correct. I think.

Agreed. But he didn't have to give "attitude" about it. ;)

I made an honest mistake. I left an hour in advance, but a prankster gave me directions to a one-horse town in a European nation. I never did get to give a eulogy that day, and an heir of a ewe called me a usurper. I am an honorable woman so I’ll just consider this a unique experience.

:D

I think that 'an' should be used before a word beginning with a vowel or an h if using 'a' sounds abrupt. 'A unique' is slightly more abrupt than 'an unique' but both are used.

'An egg' is easier to say than 'a egg'.

What used to be correct is not fixed. The English language is always evolving.

Well, I did say the phrase in my mind with both the "A" and "An"... They both sounded right to me... ...so I went with "an".
