"A" and "An", a silly question...

Forgive me, or this thread, but I have a silly/stupid question. When the next word in a sentence starts with a vowel, aren't you supposed to use "an"? And "A" is only used when the next word is a consonant?

You are absolutely correct.
'An' is supposed to always be used before a word beginning with a vowel and I believe even some words beginning with an 'H'. (an honorary title for example)

I think that 'an' should be used before a word beginning with a vowel or an h if using 'a' sounds abrupt. 'A unique' is slightly more abrupt than 'an unique' but both are used.

'An egg' is easier to say than 'a egg'.

What used to be correct is not fixed. The English language is always evolving.
