_The Hours_ or _Adaptation_:

Which movie should I see today?

Meryl Streep or Meryl Streep?

The Hours is from Venus, Adaptation's from Mars.

"The Hours" looks horrible, an actress fest.

"Adaptation" looks like a cool conceit well executed.

I say go with Spike.

Spike? Hmm...I wasn't a huge fan of _Being John Malkovich_. And Meryl Streep is in both? I'm more interested, as far as female actresses are concerned, in Julianna Moore.

I'll check back in here in a couple hours and will make my decision according to the consensus reached (or according to my own whim).

I'll then report later with a brief review of the movie.

I'm glad you liked it Olivianna. It's one of my favorite movies of the year. I haven't seen The Hours. But, if you like Julianne Moore, have you seen Far From Heaven?

Far from Heaven was awesome. Love Julianne Moore AND Dennis Quaid.

_Far from Heaven_? Geez, what's that? I'm somewhat disconnected from the world of movies (rarely go to the theaters, no TV). What's it about? Maybe I just need to jog my memory.

Yeah, _Adaptation_ was very good. Much better than _Being John..._. The more I think about _Adapt._, the more I like it.

Far From Heaven is one of the best films of the year and should earn Julianne Moore an Oscar. It's directed by Todd Haynes, I believe, and is shot in New England in the 1950s. It's about the family next door, whose husband has a great job, wife is active in the community, just the perfect family with 2 kids. It really analyzes so many aspects of the 50s. The husband has a deep secret from the wife. The wife becomes friends with the gardener who is black. Society shuns and snubs her because he is black, yadda yadda yadda.

Actually, just talking about this film doesn't do it justice. The cinematography is amazing. The style of the film enhances the storyline. It's visually gorgeous, emotionally wrenching, and amazingly acted.

Never heard of Adaptation, must not be out here in the UK yet. The Hours is released here later this week if I'm not mistaken, I am looking forward to seeing that.

Lance,
Have you seen it?

Not yet; it's one of the few films out there that have sparked an interest, so I will see it soon.

From what I've read it have many facets; I enjoy movies that require thinking.

And car chases.

Lavender,
I remember hearing/reading about _Far From Heaven_. When it comes out on video, I'll have to coerce a VCR-and-TV-owning pal to let me watch the film at their place.

Lance,

What do you mean by many facets? If you mean it's a film of many layers and depth with respect to human emotion, I think that's far from the mark. Adaptation is a fun film. You just sit in the theatre and go for a two hour ride. What's fun about it is how much rests within that 2 hours.

Olivianna,

Good call. There are still a ton of movies from 2002 I want to see, but am waiting for video. I really want to see Bowling for Columbine and Talk to Her. They're still showing here, I just don't think I'll have time to go to the theatre.

Hmmm...I would say that it has many layers and facets. It's a movie about movie-making...but then it's also about the creative impulse, or lack thereof. It's about the drive to be passionate, and the constructed nature of passion and fantasy. It is about originality and formula - all brilliantly commented upon through the use of doppelgangers, references to Fellini and film noir, and a tidy ending that manages to be neither trite nor tongue-in-cheek. The movie's wild ride ending leads one to believe that the screenplay writer (Charlie) has succumb to the formulaic shlock (porn, car chases, drugs) favored by his twin. And he has. Does this then suggest that all inspiration, passion, drive (and, conversely, self-loathing) is constructed, that it always follows a recipe?

As I said, I've not yet seen it, but understand it to be fun and full of surprises...the kind of film you might want to see more than once to catch all the details...or facets...of the story.

I just hope there are car chases.

Thank you, Brian Linehan.
