___PICKUP Trucks___

A quote from a lit user her name: "userid_unknown"

"Do you know that when a woman wears a leather dress, a man's heart beats quicker, his throat gets dry, he gets weak in the knees, and he begins to think irrationally? Ever wonder why?
It's because she smells like a new truck".

I like it :)

so true

The guys in there Nissans always trying to drive faster than everyone else. I haven't been in one not sure how it drives. IS the harley loud?

Truck is fast. Country guy here long southern drawl. Lots of gravel and dirt roads. Yes Harley's loud and vibrates when idling at red lite. No ladies complained yet. Winks.

what's up with y'all not saying the year of your trucks? ( see you made me break out in my southern accent now :p)

Any one install a K&N filter make your sick truck sound sick-er;)?
Or any special tune ups?
ugh the big, humongous, black on black fords that I see are so nice :D (drool)

Sorry about that-
2003 Silverado (it's scared 'cuz it KNOWS it's in a land of Fords)
2001 Super Duty V10
1978 hotrod F150

The hotrod has much more than a K&N filter. It has a sound like no other around here- low, rumbling exhaust note that you can feel in your chest. I told the boy fat tires & loud pipes don't make it fast. He told me, "You're right Dad but all the other pieces do." And yes, it has tune up specs that Henry Ford never considered for a work vehicle.

It needs that loping rhythm of a high lift, long duration camshaft. to sound like. Can you still get an FE block in 1978? like a 390, 410 or 428?

Free-flow exhaust SHOULD be a good thing, but my toyota with its injection system does not seem to like my missing exhaust system obstruction. I live in an area exempt from emission testing. I had my welder in storage so I paid a guy cash to pipe it from manifold to a glass-pack and out. I think it needs a little more back pressure.

I remember being probably the age your son was when he started working on his.... We figured seat of pants engineering was better than gov't mandated crap. Sometimes our mods worked...sometimes they didn't.

We put a lot of premium on a nice exhaust note.

411 gears make as much of a difference as anything else.

Query- It has enough overlap in the cam to give it that lopey sound. 351W with all the normal stuff- headers, 4bbl, alum intake, etc. Right now it has 3.25 gears. May be going deeper in the future, but they are good for highway cruising. He and I have built this truck together. He comes up with the wild ideas, I bring him back to earth and show him how to make it work.

As to the FE blocks- they were discontinued in 1976. The (anemic) 360 was the last one.

Ah...yeah the 351 windsor.. is a nice mill...before my buddy ran it out of oil, it ran smooth good power and with a grampa shell I was still getting 24mpg. Mine was an (1989?) 351special

In 1970 my dad had a brand new company car. A gold gran torino with a 351 cleveland. It had a nice sound to it. I think the cleveland had lower torque, MAYBE higher revs?

I know the hotrod guys like the cleveland but I think it is only because it starts at lighter weight? I might have the two mixed up. Ford, unlike GM sure had a lot of engine families.

I recently lost (sort of abandoned) a 65 merc wagon with a 300hp 390 under the hood with under 100K miles on it. I got it smoking badly and missing. 65 had solid push rods and splash oiling of the top end. I went to pull the head when I found I had a dead cylinder and found to my delight it had a broken intake pushrod. Took me an hour with a grabby tool to fish the two ends out but for about $2 I fixed a car that had sat in a garage since 1974. Ford fixed the problem with the 428 side-oiler..(or was it 427?) i get the stroked versus bored ones mixed up.

I hate nascar because in (1965?) the 427 cammer with its overhead cam system was banned and it set back American engineering almost 30 years with that one decision.

OMG you guys are turning me ON, stop! lol

Sorry Miss, my natural gearhead persona slipped out when my natural pervert should have been on duty. Please forgive me. Or feel free to get naked and redirect my thoughts. ;)
