Former President Jimmy Carter, who at 98 years old is the longest-lived American president, has entered home hospice care in Plains, Georgia, a statement from The Carter Center confirmed Saturday. After a series of short hospital stays,

Likely the closest to a Christian as I've ever known of.

Just heard an interesting bit of Jimmy Carter trivia that I'd never heard before:

Question: How old was Jimmy's wife Rosalynn when he first met her?
Answer: She was ten minutes old. Jimmy's mother was a midwife who delivered her while 3-year old Jimmy waited in the next room. He was then invited in to meet her!

I voted for Jimmy Carter in 1976. On election day in 1980 I had the flu and a temperature of 100, but I still went to the polls to vote for Carter. I hope I did not infect anyone with my flu.

Carter's presidency was wrecked by the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Carter was not responsible for that. President Eisenhower was. In 1953 Eisenhower directed the CIA to help the British MI6 and the Iranian military to overthrow the democratically elected government of Iran, and install the Shah of Iran as absolute monarch. The Shah was never a popular leader. The Iranians blamed the U.S. for putting him in power and keeping him there.

When the Shah was overthrown the Iranians expressed their hostility for the U.S. The Iranian hostage crisis resulted.

Because of the Iranian Revolution the price of gasoline increased, along with inflation in general.

Carter was probably the most sincere Christian to ever be an American president. Nevertheless, the religious right supported Ronald Reagan. Reagan was a product of Hollywood who rarely attended church. The religious right was mainly motivated by opposition to abortion. As Governor of California Reagan signed a law legalizing abortion in that state. The three Supreme Court justices Reagan nominated to the Supreme Court each voted to preserve Roe vs Wade.

When Carter was president an average of 2,600,000 jobs were created every year. Under Reagan that declined to 2,000,000 jobs created per year. When Carter was president there was a brief six month recession in which the unemployment rate reached 7.8%. Under Reagan there was a sixteen month recession, in which the unemployment rate reached 10.8%.

My factual assertions will be documented upon request.

Damn. I remember his presidency, all the usual political attacks about his family members. His brother was a tad odd and Miss Lillian. :) Basically, his familiy was what you saw, real. I remember when it came out that Reagan pulled behind the scenes bs to beat Carter. Carter was one of the rare presidents who tried to be real.

No disagreement with your assertions and would add that he appointed Paul Volker to the Fed which was unpopular at the time but wise. But it’s also true that President Carter’s windfall profits tax, his luxury tax, the Synfuel Corporation had terrible consequences.

That said, he was and is a good man. In this time of his life, it’s best to remember him as an American President and leave it at that.

I like most of what you said. I am always in favor of raising taxes on the rich.

Oh no. Dreadful news, he’s such a good man. When Reagan left the Presidency he made millions from speaking engagements. Carter went back to building houses with Habitat for Humanity.
This is why I always admired Jimmy Carter. He was a genuine Christian in his dedication to service and helping humanity. His policies were not without their faults, I am not saying he was the perfect president, but I would certainly rather have had him in office than the current or previous one.

Easily the second-best ex-president we've ever had (after John Quincy Adams, who became an abolitionist leader in Congress).
Another fun fact: he never actually used the word "malaise".

I prefer to keep the rich and the tax revenues they generate in my home country and my home state.
During Reagan's presidency the top tax rate for income taxes declined from 70% to 28%.

Carter's last full year in office was 1980. At the end of 1980 the national debt was $908 billion. The national debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 32%.

Reagan's last full year in office was 1988. The national debt had risen to $2,602 billion. The national debt as a percentage of GDP had risen to 50%.

What happened to the Republican commitment to balanced budgets?

Everyone take care on what you read online. There's some deliberate misinformation being circulated in meme form on the socials that President Carter has already passed away.

and you know how America is.

Defense spending

During President Carter's last year in office, in 1980 the national debt was $908 billion. The national debt as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 32%. Since the end of the Second World War it had declined under Republican and Democrat Presidents. It had declined during the Korean War and the War in Vietnam.

During the Reagan administration the United States was at peace. Nevertheless, the national debt grew to $2,602 billion. The national debt as a percentage of GDP grew to 50%.
