Just thought I'd share the news. Hint to parents, self defense classes might not be a bad idea. :)

Judo is a really good martial art for children, because it is based on using an opponents momentum against him and relative size isn't all that important. Also because it's th emost defensive of the martial arts I am familair with.

For older girls and women, I'm a big beliver in Hap kiddo.

There's another one, which name I can't remember (jiu jistsu?) that is all about avoiding an attacker, basically stepping aside and holding out a leg for him to stumble on.

I took some martial arts as a child (Karate - based) and it was wonderful for obtaining focus and control of the emotional, mental, and physical responses that are normally only instinct driven. I'd love to put my two youngest girls in martial arts classes, if only to teach them some self-control and boost their confidence. The arts go a long way to reducing a person's feelings of vulnerability enough to prompt a defensive/evasive response that might not ordinarily be present because of overwhelming fear. It's really a good way to go, in my opinion.

Good on her for fighting back and evading the abuse she likely would have suffered had she not.

I obviously encourage parents to instill martial arts in their children for this and many other reasons. Another reason is they find it less necessary to prove them self among others at schools and playgrounds. Self confidence and self defense are tools that aid in building their charactors as well as ensuring a way to defend themselves and survive on a planet that is sometimes harsh.

but keeping with your article, most schools will except children 4 years of age and older. I had a student, a young girl of 9 years old. She too used her skills to elude an abduction which led to this persons arrest since they could not get up off the ground after her volley of excited assaults. I believe the element of suprise can be a valuble tool with the young.

My son is 21 and has been in martial arts since he was 4. I can verify that it has not only made him a better person but I feel it helped guide his energys and desires in a fruitful way.

thanks Liar~

Many martial arts training classes around here teach survival techniques for children. Specifically with how to avoid bullies and defuse those situations, what to do if a stranger approaches, how to be aware.

Obviously her training prepared her well. She did what everyone hoped she'd be able to do and saved herself from horrible trauma.

It just makes you feel pretty good to read that, doesn't it? It's empowering.

Well done, kid.

Judo is an awesome martial art for the young or older..my wife started taking judo when she was about 10 yrs old and was able to fight off an attacker when she was about 11 yrs old. She continued on in the sport and was on the provincial team and the mational team later in life..

its great to hear stories like this one..what an empowering feeling for the child, being able to protect herself like that!

Aikido is the martial art you're thinking of, Liar. No offensive moves at all in it.

It's also one of the hardest to learn and master because of it. In many ways, especially for Westerners, it goes completely against the grain.

Hapkido was the martial art I liked best. It taught kicks, strikes and blocking similar to karate, pressure points, twists and locks similar to aikido, and some weaponry (canes and staffs).

Jiu Jitsu requires a really vicious mindset in my opinion. You are taught to hurt your opponent.

I still have some of the kobudo weapons I acquired when I studied that; sais, kama and nunchucka. I still break them out and practice, just to see if I remember how.

On topic, good for the girl. I can just see the guy's cellmates. "Nine years old? And she beat you? C'mere bitch!" Can't say I feel too sorry for the bastard.

now that's poetic humor <bigrin

YES!!! *does the happy dance*

Sorry. I just had to say that. YES to a 9 year old with enough common sense, and enough faith in herself, to do it. YES to parents who taught her to fight back. And YES to the fact that that creep got his ass handed to him by a child.

I'm all for teaching your kids to fight, and fight effectively, with every weapon they have: voice, skill, training, flight, etc. I won't advocate them fighting at school, or for no justified cause, but I will back them to the gates of Hell itself if they have to defend themselves against an opponent.

*goes off to hug her kids*

Hurrah for her. Quick-thinking child.

Lucky, that's a great point about training and mastering the fear/confusion issues. In moments of crisis, training of almost any sort can be a help; it gives one an ingrained set of options that are usually better than "freeze in shock." Sometimes they can be the wrong reactions, but it's surprising what they can be good for. I was never trained to deal with a riot, but when I found myself in the middle of one, the training I did have - which was specific to the profession I was pursuing and the location I was in at the time - snapped me quickly out of a freeze and gave me something useful to do. Ultimately, it served me well.
