Joseph Bryson was starting to think that Mr Cunningham had a grudge against him. The first Chemistry class and his lab partner had lit the bunsen burner incorrectly. Alex panicked, and Joseph tried to bring it under control. Then Cunningham decided that seeing Joseph trying to deal with it, it must have been his fault. Since then, any slight error was a deliberate snub to the teacher. So, as a by product, he got lumbered with extra work to demonstrate he actually knew what he was doing.

Like he didn't have enough problems as it was. He had to get his room cleaned up for his new roommate. And from what he heard, it was a foreign student! He prayed that it was not a Korean or Japanese student. He could only handle so much without the cultural bizarreness that seemed to come with them.

He walked through the enclosed walkway between the library and the dorm, stopping part the over and staring out the clear cover. The vague reflection showed an unhappy young man with a number 5 cut that made his brown hair look lighter than it was. His blue eyes scanned the reflection, taking in the details etched into his face. Standing at 6' tall, he still had his lithe build from his days throwing the Javelin in competition events since he was 10 years old. Until 2 years before, he was on track for a spot in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams.

He closed his eyes, seeing both his own point of view of that throw, as well as the camera view. It was a perfect throw. His speed was spot on. The final series of steps could not have been better. The exit vector was correct, the spin was good, his follow through flawless. He stood there, watching the javelin sail through the air, arcing high and going further than he had ever thrown before. It topped out of it's arc, and he knew he was onto a personal best at the very least, if not another more substantial record.

But then it all went wrong. The javelin continued it's descent, the point down as it continued with it's destined impact with the ground. But it was human flesh that it impacted on. A Field Official had forgotten to move sideways and had tried to out distance the incoming javelin. It slammed into the man's chest, just below the collarbone. Even from the throw line, Joseph saw the splash that said only one thing - blood.

He never threw a Javelin again after that. Whenever he touched one, he saw the man lying on the ground, bleed profusely while ambulance officers rushed to assist him. The man lived, with massive loss of motor function in his left arm. Joseph was cleared of any wrong doing. But between the press coverage, and his personal nightmares, his career in sport was over.

He sighed, and resumed his walk to his room. That was in the past now. He was focusing on his studies now, Physics his new passion. He was drawn to Astronomy and Cosmology was also appealing. He thought about the life cycle of stars and galaxies, as well as the latest advances in what was now called M-Theory. All of those fields were all calling to him, beckoning him to dive into the mysteries and see what pearls he would be able to find.

He stopped when he got to his dorm, finding the door slightly ajar. He rolled his eyes skyward and shook his head a little. "Crap. Now the door lock's gone. Why me?" He pushed the door open and walked in. He took one step before he noticed that he was not alone in the room. Absent mindedly, he closed the door, not registering the click as the door locked on closing. He carefully stepped closer to the sleeping form in the other bed.

Joseph's roommate wasn't who he thought he would be inflicted with. Whoever he was, he was short, thin and well... slightly girlish in appearance. Joseph sighed. He could hear the taunts now. 'How's your girlfriend, Joseph?' 'Gee, who do we have to spear to get such a sweet looking roomie?' Joseph sat down at his desk, and went over his notes from the week in the vain hope that some of it would both sink in, and distract him from the problem that was sleeping in the other bed.

Joseph stared at the book between glances at his new roommate. Joseph was annoyed that his peaceful environment was broken by the presence of the newcomer. He had the entire previous year having the room to himself, and he thought it would remain that way. He didn't really mind at first, but now that it happened, he didn't like the idea.

The glances got longer as time went on and his irritation grew. He knew he was being childish, and he needed to adjust quickly. Joseph just wished the sleeping boy would wake up so he could find out more about the intruder into his life at the dorm.

He managed to concentrate more of the book by the time the sleeper woke up, and went to the loo. Joseph put the book down and waited for him to come out so they could introduce each other. But his roommate was was still half asleep at best, and didn't seem to notice he wasn't alone.

Joseph turned his attention back to the book as the other boy collapsed onto the bed. He heard movement as the other boy was now awake, and noticed he was not alone.

"Um, hello. I am Nicolas Atwood, your new roommate." Joseph put his book down and looked over at Nicolas. Awake, Nicolas still looked more like a girl than a boy. Then his roommate fell off the bed, calling out his name.

"JOE!?!" He then clapped a hand over his mouth, looking somewhat embarrassed.

Joseph rolled his eyes skyward and muttered quietly, "Great, someone who knows my sporting past." He got up and walked over to help Nicolas get up off the floor.

"I prefer if you called me Joseph. So, you know who I am, and I guess you feel a bit surprised sharing a dorm with a celebrity. But don't worry about it, I'm just an ordinary boy like you. Welcome to Nudgee."

Joseph went about gathering up his stuff, dumping it on his bed. He sat down and started sorting through it all, most of it being dirty laundry. When he had completed the split, he started to fold and put away the clean clothes.

"So, Nicolas, since you already know me, and probably a bit about me already, tell me about yourself?"

"Hey, Nicolas, sorry for being a bit grumpy. It's just that I've had this place to myself for a year, and I didn't expect to have someone else here. So, it's a bit of a shock to the system." Joseph got up and dumped clothes into the proper draws, and hung up the few larger items in the wardrobe.

"Well, at least you got here on a Saturday, which gives you a little time to get settled before jumping into classes. And since you're my roommate, I get to be your 'school buddy'. In other words, I'm your first point of contact when you need to find out about something.

"Of course, tomorrow morning we'll have to be up at sparrow fart for Mass. Father Gregori has a nasty accent, and he's as boring as watching grass growing, but the teachers make sure that no one sleeps during the service. You'll get a sharp poke in the ribs followed by detention if you do."

Joseph flopped down on his bed, his hands behind his head. As he settled, he felt his positioning to be quite uncomfortable. Without thinking that there was someone else in the room, he repositioned his manhood so it was not being strangled by his underwear. Only after he did it, he realised he was not alone.

"Sorry, mate. Old habits die hard. And the old fella down there was in serious danger. I'll try and be a little more polite and discrete next time. Anyway, what other five subjects are you doing? I mean, you do know that English and Religious Studies are mandatory, don't you? Well, me, I'm doing Maths-Science. Maths One & Two, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. If you're doing Chemistry, hope like hell you don't have Cunningham. As soon as he learns you're bunking with me, he'll probably have you in his sights too."

He listened to Nicolas' talking about his hobbies. The mention of tennis reminded him of games that he and friends used to play when he was younger.

"Tennis. Gee, I haven't played that for about five years. A group of us would play combined doubles and singles. Yeah, three kids a side. Some of the funniest stuff I ever took part in. Jake, Sarah, Nicola, Michael,... oh who was the other one... Gary and of course me. So bizarre, but we made it work. When it gets a little cooler, I might grab a court with you. How does that sound?"

He lay there for a few minutes, staring at the ceiling. "Well, this is not getting my required study done. I'll let you finish getting yourself unpacked, Nicolas. If you've got any questions, just ask." Joseph climb out of his bed, and returned to his desk.

"Well, Beaufort knows his stuff, and he can actually make English classes interesting. Father Paul... he's ok. He's a Jesuit, so watch out. He'll hit you with questions that he seems to know you wont be able to answer. At least quickly. Cunningham, well there's no more to add to that.

"Biology is going to be fun. Miss Fairweather is fresh out of uni. She has a set of legs that she seems to like showing off, not to mention an arse to kill for. She seems to have found the the edge of acceptable clothing, according to the guidelines, and has taken to flaunting as much as she can get away with.

"As to the rest of your teachers, I wouldn't have a clue. Though, Peter might know about the Political Sciences teacher. I think we only have one class of that, so he'd be able to help out."

Joseph was getting a little uncomfortable with how close Nicolas was getting. Joseph felt that his personal space was being invaded, and he backed away from Nicolas just enough to get rid of the crowded feeling.

"Well, unless there is anything else, I have to get a little study done. Then it'll be time for dinner. One good thing about this place is that the food is good. There are two rules for us boarders when it comes to eating.

"Take what you eat. Eat what you take."

Joseph buried his nose in his Physics text book, occasionally jotting down notes as he worked his way through a complete chapter. He managed to get himself into a place where Nicolas didn't exist, and he was able to focus on the various topics he was having difficulties coming to grips with.

Once he finished the actual study, he turned his focus to Nicolas. They would be sharing a room for the next 10 months, 7 days a week. Nicolas seemed a nice enough bloke, even if he did look a little... feminine. So what? It wasn't Nicolas' fault he looked the way he did. The more he thought about it, the nicer the thought was to have someone around to talk to without having to go through the hassle of tracking someone down. Though there was one thing he needed to ask Nicolas about. Where Nicolas knew his name from. It was an instant recognition, followed by the normal embarrassment of meeting an idol, celebrity or other personality. It would be something to quiz him about over dinner.

While Nicolas was in the bathroom, Joseph got himself into some slightly more presentable clothing for dinner. Jeans, polo shirt and sneakers.

"So what is it tonight? I am pretty starving."

"Well, it's a full on roast tonight. Seasoned chicken, roast potatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato, onions along with beans, peas, sweet corn and carrots. Then there is apple strudel for desert, with ice cream, custard or cream. Depending on your fancy."

The two of them started walking towards the dining hall, slowly joining a growing stream of boarders all heading for the same thing - Food. All of the other boys were casually dress, and chatting amongst themselves.

"Joseph!" He turned to see Peter threading his way through the masses to catch up with him. "Hey, when does your... Oh, you're his new roommate." Peter put his hand out for Nicolas to shake. "Peter Danfield. Pleased to meet you.

"So, mate, you've lost your solitude at last. Poor bastard." Peter laughed. "So, once we've gotten ourselves some food, you know you're going to get grilled."

"Don't worry about Peter, he's planning on going into criminal law so he wants to practice his questioning techniques. He does it to everyone. And it bores the... tears out of you." Joseph spotted Mister Clarents just in time, saving himself time in detention.

They all filed in, forming a single line as they picked up trays, plates and cutlery. Soon, they were either being given various food stuffs, or serving themselves. Once the trio were loaded down, they found themselves a place to sit and eat their dinner.

"So," Peter said after shoving a substantial portion of food into his mouth, eating it and swallowing it, "I'll give you the chance to hang yourself before a draw and quarter you. So, tell us about yourself."

Joseph stifled a laugh as Nicolas gave Peter a dose of his own medicine, flooding his with so much information that Peter sat there baffled for a few moments.

"Can I eat now, Peter?" Peter just nodded, slowly taking another forkful of food as he gave Joseph a questioning look. Joseph gave up trying to stop the laugh at that point.

"Nicolas, now you have been properly welcomed to Nudgee. And might I say, you passed with fly colours, mate." They continued eating for a while, both of them actually surprised as they watched Nicolas eating more food than they thought we would actually pack away.

"Hey, Joe, you know that the sport's carnival will be starting in a month, and -"

"DON'T!" Without meaning to, Joseph hurled a piece of sweet potato at Peter when he pointed his fork at him to back up his words. "I am not going to take part in the javelin," he hissed. "Now you can kindly tell whoever put you up to this to fuck off. OK?"

"Do you want me to use those exact words to a teacher?" Peter asked, half wondering if Joseph was serious about the choice of words. The look he got from Joseph put that fear to rest.

"So, tennis, Nick. Our house could use a good tennis player. Cotter House hasn't done well in ages." Nick looked confused at the reference to one of the boarder's buildings.

"Don't worry about it, Nicolas," Joseph piped up. "Cotter, Hodda, Murphy and O'Brien are also the names of the sporting houses. Just to confuse things a little for us boarders. Because of our surnames, like Mister Danfield over there, we're all in Cotter House. Look, I'll swim in the relay and butterfly events when the swimming carnival is on, but field events in the Sports Carnival are a no go."

The rest of dinner was quiet, and when they finished eating, the two locals looked at Nicolas with new found respect for his ability to pack away so much food.

"Well, I need to hit the sack," Peter said, loading up his tray with the remains of his dinner. "I'll see you tomorrow for Mass."

Joseph and Nick followed suit a little later, and wandered back to their dorm. Joseph grabbed some clothing and headed into the bathroom. In there, he brushed his teeth, and used some mouthwash, and got into his sleep clothes, which consisted of a singlet and a pair of boxer style pants. He wandered over to his bed, pulling down the covers and flopping into his bed.

"If you feel the need to read, or anything like that, go for it. I can sleep with a light on without any problems. As long as it's not shone in my eyes. Oh, I hope I don't snore.

"Good night, Nicholas." He rolled over, facing away from Nicholas, and slowly drifted off to sleep.

The alarm going off when it did was no surprise to Joseph anymore. Even though it was still dark outside, he was up and mostly awake. Nicolas, on the other hand, was still sound asleep. With a slight grin, Joseph gave his room mate a shove.

"Wake up, Nicolas. Time to get ready for Mass." Joseph continued through to the bathroom, stopping to grab a spare pillow from a wardrobe, and accurately lobbed at Nicolas' head. When Nicolas finally pulled his head out from under the covers and the extra pillow, he gave Joseph a dirty look. "Hey, we need to get ready for Mass. I don't want to see you in detention before you even formally start school."

Joseph disappeared into the bathroom, and had a quick shower. He got out, dried himself off, and walked out in the main part of the dorm room without a stitch of clothing on. He sat on his bed, reaching for a pair of jocks to put on, he saw Nicolas trying to study the calender rather intently.

"Oh, shit! Sorry, Nicolas. Still operating on solo mode a bit." He quickly donned his underwear, and started getting dressed in good quality clothing. "Move it Nicolas, you've got about 10 minutes before we need to be out the door." Joseph looked up some email while he waited for Nicolas to get ready.

They walked out the door to find Peter and other student waiting for them. "Hey, Joe, Nicolas. Nicolas, this is Steven Ellis. Steve, Nicolas Atwood." Steve extended his hand to Nicolas, giving Nicolas' hand a good shake.

"Right fellas, we need to make sure that Nicolas doesn't fall asleep during Father Gregori's service. At least this one. So, whoever flanks him, have those elbows ready." Joseph got nods from the other two boys as they headed over to the Church.

"Well, congratulations to Nicolas for staying awake without any intervention." Pete said when they reached a good distance from the Church after leaving the Mass. "We've saved him from the worst possible fate known to a Nudgee boarder."

"We didn't do a thing, Pete," Steve piped up. "No wonder you want to get into Law, you can't help but lie."

"No, Pete will go into politics, taking credit for someone else is their way." Joseph said with a slight laugh. Pete looked mortified by the comments until he realised that they were joking.

The four of them ate breakfast together, talking about previous special events that occurred in the Mass, including the time that three teachers fell asleep, one of them snoring!

"So," Pete asked the table, "What's on the cards for the rest of the day?"

All eyes turned to Nicolas.

"Um..maybe...where do you guys check out girls? I mean this place is like a woman wasteland!"

Joseph and the other two gave Nicolas a look of "Duh!". The three of them traded looks that communicated a large amount.

"Chermside!" The three said in unison. Joseph cut in, "Steve, thank you for volunteering to drive us, not that you needed a reason." The three of them laughed. "Steve's mum got him a reward gift for getting good grades. A HSV sedan. If he got even better grades, we would have been in a BMW. So, he jumps at any chance to drive his new toy around."

"All right, fellas," Steve said. "We meet in the visitor's carpark in thirty minutes time, max. We'll have six hours maximum to wow the ladies before we return. Joe, you fill Nick in on the separation drill. Gents, let's move."

The other three stood, moving to dispose of the remains of their breakfasts. Joseph hung around and waited for Nick to catch up.

"Right, separation drill. If you manage to get separated from the rest of us, find a map of the centre, SMS me the map coords, and I will come fetch you. We're going to the Chermside shopping centre, mainly hitting the food court and cinema areas. You and I, however, have the chance of checking out the local pub, since we're legal, and have watertight IDs."

Joseph and Nicolas returned to their dorm and got changed, Joseph in the main room, Nicolas in the bathroom. Joseph knock on the door to let Nicolas know it was safe for him to enter the room, since he got a little uncomfortable after the nudity incident. Joseph was dressed in a good polo shirt, jeans and good quality runners.

"Hurry up, you slacker. We've only got 10 minutes left, and it'll take us three or four to get to the carpark. If we miss the cutoff, Pete will never let either of us live it down."

They arrived as Chermside Shopping Centre in good time, and tried their luck parking nearer to the food court. As suspected, the parking spaces around that part of the centre were full. So they continued cruising the various parking areas until they found one - on the other side of the centre.

"I know," Peter said. "This is God's way of ensuring we get exercise." Steve and Joe laughed at the long running joke. Anytime things went bad, Peter would say "This is God's way of -" insert some activity relating to the outcome.

"Pete, I prefer to think of it as a chance of wetting the appetite." Steve let his head turn as a girl wandered past in a mini shirt and tank top that let everyone know what her figure looked like, as well as what great legs she had.

"Careful, Steve, you almost stepped on your tongue just then," Joe laughed as he tracked an older woman in front. She wore shorts that were a good fit, and did a fine job of being in contact with as much of her arse as possible. He leaned over to Nicolas, and spoke softly. "I'm fairly certain that she's not even wearing a g-string under that." He sighed as the woman turned into a jewelry and he caught a look at her face and her front. "Damn. If she's got someone, male or female, they are fucking lucky."

The rest of the time the three rubber necked furiously, opening admiring the women around their own age as they walked towards the food court. They compared the relative attributes against other "known" standards - women that the trio thought were great examples of the female physique, though Nicolas didn't recognise any of the names.

"So, Joe," Steve said as he watched Joe giving one girl a fair amount of visual attention, "do you think she could keep your ears warm with her thighs?" He chuckled while Joe thumped him in the arm.

"That was the last time I told you anything about my time with a woman. You have no understanding of why that happened. And something tells me you wont either. Not for a long time."

"Well, Steve, I think Joe might have a chance with her," Pete said as he caught up with them. "She's been eying him off hard, as if she's trying to play catch up. And before you say it mate, everyone saw how hard you were looking at her."

"Why not, she's dressed to impress, and she impressed me. What about you Nick, you seem to be quiet. Anyone caught your eye?"

As Pete got Nicholas involved in the afternoon's activities, he turned his attention back to the young woman he had been looking at, and Pete had been correct. He caught her looking back at him. It was a bit of a race to who broke contact first with a slight blush.

"Well, I think it's time to break off and try our own luck a little," Pete said to Steve. "These pair seem to be on a roll." With a wave, the other two peeled off. Joe chuckled and found himself an empty seat, and watched Nicholas in action. He roommate seemed to be nervous, but they all were at that time. He noticed that Nicholas was going for a girl about his height. She was nice enough, a little slimmer than than he personally liked, but all up, not a bad looking woman.

He became aware of movement near by, and he turned to see the girl he had bee watching taking a seat next to him. Joe couldn't help but smile when she made a show of looking ahead of her. But he would see her eyes shifting to catch glimpses of him.

"It's ok, you can look at me without turning to stone. Medusa was female, so you're safe in that regard." The girl looked at him and laughed a little. "I'm Joseph."

"Thank you. It's a good thing to know. I'm Jill. And I know you're Joseph. Joseph Bryson."

Joseph's ease vanished at the mention of his name by a stranger. That meant one thing... a fan of his Javelin days. Jill saw the reaction, and looked a little startled.

"I'm sorry... It's just my brother is at Nudgee as well. Tim Kosker?"

Joseph was relieved and embarrassed. Of course she'd know him. Jospeh and Tim had spent a fair amount of time together working on science projects the previous year, some of it over at his home.

"How come he hasn't mentioned that he has a sister?"

"He doesn't like telling people he has a twin sister. He used to get teased about it at school a lot. They used to say that we were identical, and that he looked so much like his twin they could tell us apart." She shrugged. "He doesn't hide the fact, he just doesn't mention it. I also don't usually hang around when he brings any of his friends around."

"Usually?" Joseph looked over to see how Nicholas was doing. He lost track of his roommate and got a little nervous. He realized how rude he was being, and turned his attention back to Jill. "Sorry. I have a friend nearby. Newly arrived from the US."

"The shorter one? Yeah, I saw him over there chatting to a girl, but I can't see them either."

"Nevermind, he can find me if he get's lost. But you said 'usually'."

Jill blushed a little as she smiled. "Yeah. I saw a photo of you that Tim had from some excursion you'd been on. I... I thought you looked good. When you two were working together, I made sure I was home and I watched you."

Joseph shifted in his seat so he was facing Jill. "So... you here by yourself? You're not with friends, or waiting for them?"

"No, Tim's got some of his rubgy mates over, so I cleared out before they turned up. He seems to make friends with the neanderthals of the team. I just came here to window shop and just wait until they were gone."

"Well, I dunno about you, but I'm hungry. You want to get something to eat?"

"Sure. I'd like that." The two of them hopped off the stools and went for a walk to get check out what was on offer from the various vendors in the food court.
