Day of tributes marks end of WWII

One million poppies are to be dropped on The Mall in London as part of events marking the end of World War II.

It's a poignant day, not only in London, but all over the UK. Please remember them. All of them.

If only remembering the slaughter of millions could translate into protecting and enhancing the lives of current and future generations regardless of creed, politics and ethnicity.

I'll remember and hope that my remembering brings compassion to act and believe with equanimity.

Yes, I believe it will.

If we remember those who gave their lives for our way of life and freedom, how could it not?

If we remember the horror that was the discovery of the concentration camps, how could it not?

If we remember the unity of spirit, and everyone's willingness to do anything for anyone, how could it not?

If we remember, we will never forget, and with that in our memories we will move forward .

If we act with defiance, dignity, and love and understanding, while all the while remembering those who went before us, I believe we will.

I remember those who fought and those who died for our freedoms.

I remember that because those freedoms now exist in countries that were then our enemies and are now our friends.

I remember that the world has changed since 1939 and while I hope that nothing like WWII will ever happen again I know that people are still dying by war, declared or not.

I remember that it is my duty to those who fought in World War II to preserve the freedoms they won, to use my vote that they fought for me to keep, and to hand those freedoms and that duty on to the next generation.

We may remember.

But even in remembering we may forget ourselves today and what we do here and now.
