Ugh. It's nearly 11:30, and it sounds like a warzone in attrition mode outside! I could sure do with a bit less nationalism and more sleep tonight!

I live on the water and all the out-of-towners have been down for a long weekend doing it every night for the last few nights. Thankfully its currently raining here so we get a break. My wife made the same comment last night at about 10:30 and I asked her why she hated freedom, then we had a good laugh.

Fireworks going off all around me too, but our tree cover is too heavy and high for me to see it. Can certainly hear it, though.

No reason to celebrate our independence.

Luckily we are free to complain. Let's take a moment and thank the Brits for that.

Happy 4th of July!

So I'm trying to figure out when the Fourth of July became Veteran's/Memorial Day Part Deux? Don't get me wrong, I respect the military, but, they aren't at least 260 years old (yes I know it was granted 241 years ago) and more than likely were not alive to fight against the British. Most of the Declaration signers were not even soldiers and many of the rebels were just regular folks.

Can anyone explain how posting "The Declaration of Independence" on the Fourth of July is anything but patriotic?
Has NPR really done it yearly ... obviously not on Twitter for 29 years?
Seems a better show of patriotism than buying and using dangerous explosives even if they are made in America.

July is really a very good month, in which we witness anniversary of a number of important events of that influence the progress of world history, including but not limited to:

The founding of USA(July 4), national day of Canada(July 1), national day of France(July 14), anniversary of return to motherland of Hong Kong (July 1), founding of Communist Party of China (July 1), FIFA World Cup finals (usually in July), Marco Polo Bridge Incident (in which China's army fought back Japanese unprovoked attack in Beiping (present Beijing) in July 7,1937, marking the full-scale military assistance to Japanese invaders as part of World War II), etc.

Some kids will lose fingers, some houses will burn down, etc. Beer will be rented.
