With major apologies to Trysail.
Surfing the news and writing so I am not sure where I heard it and a google turned up nothing substantial aside from war with Iran, but...
$400.00 a barrel for sweet crude, translates to $20.00 a gallon for diesel and $16.00 a gallon for gasoline (translate to litre's for you petrol peasants)
Because of the trucking industry, that extrapolates to a four hundred percent increase in everything you buy, with food even higher as fertilizer is a petroleum product also.
I thought to create this lil thread in response to the posters on JBJ's thread concerning how the current price rise has affected your life.
Most said, not at all or very little for various reasons.
I wonder about that.
A forty year long concerted effort by 10,000 interconnected environmental activist groups has had quite an impact. If I may, just from memory, recite a few.
Mitigation of wetlands, preserving the bugs and snakes indigenous to an area; created wild-life habitats, saving the Ducks and other assorted waterfowl.
Taking land from the market, increasing the cost of land, forcing builders to build on marginal land. Try to purchase a building parcel of land on the entire west coast, that portion not under Indian Reservation dictates.
Save the fish, no logging near streams, where the lil critters breed and procreate, no building of dams for agricultural irrigation or the generation of electricity. Housing prices escalate, food rises in price, Salmon becomes a luxury item, Charter boat operators and owners are bankrupt and unemployed.
No logging where the Spotted Owl mates and nests, spike in lumber prices, logging companies bankrupt and unemployed. No roads, no recreational usage or mining, housing becomes more expensive and the forest burns because fire fighters can't get to the burning area.(Hello SoCal)
No, 'clear cutting' logging areas because the enviro's consider it ugly, even though it creates habitat for forest critters and rejuvenates the forest.
"Let it burn naturally, it is nature!" A half a burned State later they reconsider.
No mining pollution of streams and returning any site to pristine condition. Cost of all mining products increase as the crows and moles appreciate the silence.
Let's blackmail the pipeline company to give the residents of Alaska an income and even pays their taxes. (Alaskans pay no income tax)
Price of crude from North Slope goes up while the Caribou sidle up to the warmth of the pipeline and even increase in number.
Nothing lives in ANWAR, a desolate wasteland of ice, but no, don't even explore, we won't let you drill, besides it is only zip billion barrels, a mere drop in the bucket. Yeah, sure, equal to the amount imported from both Nigeria and Venezuela, but we just don't want to disturb the pristine natural environment for aesthetic reasons.
Oh, and not off the coast either, sooner or later there will be a spill and a bird might succumb. Such a pity, under ocean oil and methane bubbles up all the time.
We may even ban oil tankers, a threat to coastal pollution, who needs oil anyway?
For twenty years plus, billions of tax dollars have gone to Wind and Solar generation with subsidies and green approval and applause from all, who needs oil anyway?
"We hate the sprawling suburbs and strip malls and Walmart too!" So let us make it more difficult if not impossible for such atrocities to be built. "Let them eat cake!" And so they do, expensive cake, at that.
There are too many people! Lets have abortions then and same sex couples who don't make babies.
Good idea. Maybe they will all go extinct.
"Let's not build any more Nukes!" No more oil refineries, NIMBY! No more drilling anywhere in Continental US (Hawaii too) Lets not waste money on manned space flights to the moon and elsewhere.
We hate the fast paced industrial society, rushing here and there, driving big cars, living in big homes, eating fast food, let's just slow things down!
Okay, you got your most desired wishes, folks, and I am sure I overlooked a few things, oh, yeah, anti DDT and other pesticides, veggies go up in price and people die by the millions of Malaria in Africa, but, no more DDT, nasty chemicals, Bhopal and all.
But we sure do like the contraceptive pill, you can keep making those so we can realize our sexual liberation. Whoopee! (from song 'Making Whoopee').
Let us all go back to no air conditioners, walking and bicycles, extra blankets and soy products.
Forty years of the "Anti-Industrial Left" (as predicted by Ayn Rand) has finally come home to roost(also from Rand) and the thing that got me on JBJ's thread from some of the usual suspects...they don't really care, quite happy, thank you, in my Tipi.
There ya go, Cloudy, back to the land, just as you wanted.
Most of the 'usual suspects' here, laugh at Atlas Shrugged and chide Ms. Rand as a poor writer, but indeed she did forecast what would happen if the anti industrial left was influential on western society, like fifty years before it happened.
Now it has arrived, but this is just the beginning of a rising tide, again, be careful what you wish for.
Amicus...
