4 day work week at same pay.... overwhelming success in Iceland

I guess giving away stuff and making folks lives better actually does inspire and motivate people work as hard or harder.

This is exactly what we need here in the USA.

If the USA wants a 4 day work week, that's what people who employ others will start scheduling.

If giving away stuff to feel better about themselves, they will.....it's called charity.

Nothing stopping them.

The thing is, for those who worry about signalling, the reduced hours with same to better productivity applies to high knowledge/high earning jobs. Which would be awesome in one aspect: bust your ass in high school/college, get a cushy 6 figure income for 20 hour a week in design, else minimum wage for for 40 hours, good luck. Scary in the exact same sense.

What stops them is competition. Same as with minimum wage.

It would to some degree stimulate the economy -- the more time off people have, they more money they spend, if they have the money.

"giving away stuff" - that's what blowhard up above thinks having a business that understands how productivity works when employees are.just.as important as profit is doing.

Fucking insane....like they don't realize that employees of these businesses actually drive the demand that drive the business.

A Ford executive was showing off the plant's new automation to a UAW official. Pointing at the machines, he said, "How are you going to organize them?" The labor leader replied, "How are you going to sell them Fords?"

"about 1% of Iceland's working population"

In a country with a good work ethic.

In the US the so called "work ethic" for many people is " I want my free shit, where's my free shit!!!"

Kennedy, back in the 60's made the famous quote, "but what you can do for your country"

Today the ethic for many is living off the gov tit, unemployment, food stamps, child assistance because you don't know your "baby daddy", all the way down to "loot & steal".

Did any of that make sense in your head, before you typed it?

That's not actual reality..that's right wing fear monger bullshit...always has been

Lazy fucks. Americans are the most productive people in the world they live to work and produce for themselves and others. If one has to give the lion's share of his earnings to the government, he'd be more inclined to work less days a week.

perhaps read the linked article? the jobs ranged from teachers to social service providers, office staff and hospital staff. How often do you hear about how well-paid social service workers are? As for the hours... most lost 4-5 hours, their work being spread over 4 rather than 5+days
In Iceland, the trials run by Reykjavík City Council and the national government eventually included more than 2,500 workers, which amounts to about 1% of Iceland's working population.

A range of workplaces took part, including preschools, offices, social service providers, and hospitals.

Many of them moved from a 40 hour week to a 35 or 36 hour week,

when all the parents are working full-time jobs (as is necessary all too often to meet the cost of mortgages, health insurance and so on), it's hard to find that balance between work and family time. When you add into the demands on time from caring for elderly/disabled dependents, a 4-day work week is a decent compromise.

What this experiment is driving at is breaking the 5-day 8-hour mindset. However, business thrive on productivity, and some research shows that knowledge workers can achieve astonishing productivity with relatively few hours. Once you break the 5d/8h paradigm, do you optimize for productivity?

That's typically why hospitals have moved towards a 4/10 shift week. It's already demonstrated productivity gains there for many.

I think what most companies are finding is that their work schedule/makeup doesn't always fit into the 40 hour /5 day work week.....I expect, especially with the working from home recently that we're about to see a bunch of companies experiment all over the world to find new approaches.

Start your own business, or ask your boss for a 4 day work week, or move to Iceland. These are your options.

“Living to work.” What a depressing thought.

It's still 40 hours a week, ya innumerate dummy.

*fewer days, not "less days." Ya ESL dummy.

You couldn't afford a car built by 100% hand labor.
