Sorry for the copy/paste article ...but I thought it best to document the source:

S. Arabia Man to Get 4,750 Lashes

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia –– A Saudi court has sentenced a man to six years in prison and 4,750 lashes for having sex with his wife's sister, a newspaper reported Sunday.

The woman involved in the case was sentenced to six months in jail and 65 lashes, the paper Al-Eqtisadiah reported, though the court found she had not consented to the relationship. She had also reported the affair to the police.

Having a relationship with one's in-law is considered a serious offense under the strict Islamic judicial code that Saudi Arabia follows.

The court, in the port city of Jiddah, ordered that the lashes be administered to the man at a rate of 95 at a time.

Lashes are often handed out by Saudi courts, although rarely in such large numbers.

The court also ruled he was not eligible for a pardon "because of the ugliness and seriousness of his crime."

Now, open for discussion.

What kind of justice is that? Several things about this article really bother me.

Primarily, why should a woman who reported it to the police, and was found by the court to be non-consenting, receive any type of punishment?

Similarly, the African woman who is sentenced to death by stoning because she became pregnant and is not married ... REGARDLESS of the fact that she was raped!

This sharia strict Islamic judicial code is mind-boggling unjust. Not only does it punish the victims, but in the same breath it condones and incites mass murder on innocent people.

Having sex with one's inlaws is considered an ugly and serious crime, yet the practice of adult men sodomizing little boys is acceptable (ask Cheyenne for that thread).

Wouldn't you think 4,750 lashes would leave a person without skin?

So many horrific inconsistencies.

Is all of Islam ruled by maniacal clerics throughout the Middle East?

It's so hard to understand why the muslim populace follows sharia, or let's the fanatics interpret law and order.

I lived in Riyadh for some years and let me tell you that their form of justice is totally alien to the Western way of thinking.

However, it works for them regardless of how unjust we think it is. So long as it doesn't get exported.

Oh, and before you say anything most of the Saudis that I knew thought the justice system was just fine. Mind you most of them were in priviledged positions and didn't seem to be subject to it. As they say in the US "go figure"

this is number 743 . Unfortunately, they don't mean much when the horse is dead.

This is, in effect, a death sentence. There is no way he will live through the administration of that many lashes. From what I understand, the instrument used is a stiff leather "cane" rather than a whip. Bones will break and the skin will basically be flayed off.

What is more disturbing to me is the fact that the woman reported a NON concensual act to the police and she will be punished for it.

Justice?... not even close.

When delivering the lashes the Koran must be held under the the arm delivereing the punishment. It is, therefore, very difficult to generate any real power as the elbow is effectively pinned to the body. So it shouldn't be a death sentence.

Justice it ain't.

*tongue firmly in cheek*

Wouldn't that depend on the size and stickyness of the dudes armpits?

Still... it isn't justice.

No argument about the lack of justice. Believe me the lashes are nothing compared to what people receive in Singapore - they apparently generally have to be revived after each one.

In Singapore they use the rotaan When I was serving there in 1983 three soldiers from a different company were caught with cocaine. They were sentenced to four years and 10 strokes of the rotaan each. One of the guys spent 4 weeks in hospital.

Two years later the amount of cocaine they were caight with would have earned them mandatory life sentences. Now I think it would be the death penalty. I'm not sure on the last though.

Yup th Rotaan is right - and it's fucking evil - lived in Singapore too and it was well known.

i think it's still life for a foreigner with drugs but death for a Singaporean
