.

Not a grad student, but Madison is a really really REALLY great place.

Also not a grad student, but had a friend go to Columbus and he was forever complaining that they were fucking everyone over. He moved to California after three years of 'torture' with Columbus.

Can't help much not being in the US and all.....but if it were me I would go for Hawaii just so you might get to hang out with Killi sometime, not to mention it is a beautiful place which is always vital when studying and you need some stress relief.

find one in Prague. Frick! why is no one willing to move to prague with me?

Went to prague on my own for a few days once.

Had a great time, did all the sightseeing, including the ghost walk, laughed at the astrological clock, bought pics I have never had framed, went to what was the concentration camp just outside Prague and cried the whole day.

I loved the people and felt very safe the whole time I was there.

You enjoy and have fun CC

It wasn't too bad? My friend was there and had me horrified. His band was touring and a bunch of their merch got jacked and he was pickpocketed by gypsies haha, that worries me

I went completely alone and have never felt that safe when travelling alone.
Much safer than London.
Everyone I met was really friendly and helpful, plus the metro has to be the cheapest in Europe

awesome :) Yeah, everything I've looked at there is incredibly cheap. My apartment for the year is costing me like, 2300 euros, and I get it to myself :) I've never lived alone though so it might suck

And if you hate living alone you could always get some other students to join you.

So you will be ok I am sure.

The concentration camp is called Terrazin I just remembered. If you go take tissues....lots of tissues

:( my friend has already made plans to visit me during one of my breaks while I'm there so we can go to Germany, because her parents want her to go to Auschwitz

My dad did his grad work at Indiana. I know it has a good reputation. I've been to Bloomington once. It struck me as a total college town. Good music department though.

*AHEM?* Why is this even a question? I command you to come to UH Manoa with me! We'll have at least one semester at the same school before I graduate!! :D ;)

Seriously though, we are KNOWN for our linguistics grad programs. I'm not into languages, but I hear yackety yackety about "language" and "grad" all the time. My best recommendation for researching different schools is to find out what professors are there and then what qualifications those teachers have and how respected their are in their fields. Professors make or break a school the same way coworkers make or break a job. I've heard we have some excellent and well-known language professors here. :)

Madison is an attractive, liberal city in the middle of a conservative state. The UW campus is situated between two beautiful lakes, and you'll be surrounded by good hospitals, libraries, and museums. There's excellent and varietous dining, decent shopping, major sporting events if that's your thing, and a small but active BDSM/fetish scene with periodic club events. Check out The Inferno Nightclub for more on those.

Do I sound like a travel brochure? Sorry...I just feel that Madison offers a bit of the best of many worlds. Civilization and natural beauty, indulgence and intellect.

And if you get sick of all that you're only 3 hours from Chicago!

If there were any job market there I'd be running away.

I know this has nothing to do with anything. But I do trust you guys and I hope someone on the board will have answers to this question.

So here's the question.

I am starting a Master's program in Linguistics in the fall of '06, and I need opinions on the Grad school and the towns they are in.

If you live in the towns or know about them, tell me if they suck or not!

If you've gone to grad school at the below mentioned, please lemme know.

Indiana University-Bloomington
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of Hawaii at Manoa
University of Iowa, not sure what city this one is in.
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Ohio State University- Columbus.

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the programs at any of the schools you specify here but let me say this - if you went to school for your undergrad in the Midwest, change scenery for your Masters. Sometimes the local atmosphere can be as important as the actual program. AT least, in my opinion. And Indiana, Wisconsn, Iowa and Ohio are hardly a linguisitic meccas. Chicago or Hawaii are more likely to offer you more internationally flavored Americana. Because, all I have to say after five years of school in Indiana is that I'm both glad and saddended that I never fit in with the rural farm kids or the yuppie conversative republican wannabes from Indy.

Small town charm's novelty wears off pretty fast.

Ok from the top...

IU Bloomington, Bloomington is very liberal, small, boring and PC (We're talking banning smoking outdoors ferchristsake), I doubt you would like it there

UofI, awesome party school, Cham/Urb, typical college town, and boring, unless you like drinking, and country music. (One of my best friends went to UofI, and I went down there almost every weekend)

UofH, Never been to Manoa, but if I had a choice, this is where I'd go.

UW Madison, Great town, lots of culture, atmosphere, and good eats.

OSU Columbus, Columbus SUCKS, unless they have the top Linguistics course in the U.S., I'd scratch this off your list.
