What really pisses me off about Darfur is the blindness we pretend in the face of savagery. It is a hostile country geographically and climatically. It's people scrape at the edge of existence in a good year. It would cost (relatively) peanuts to fix, but it doesn't have oil, it doesn't have natural resources, it just has women for raping and men for killing. Destroying tribes is an inherent weakness in man. It is not new, it has happened for eons, but that doesn't excuse their plight. Diversity is the rich broth that sustains all of us. Inseminating women to make their protegeny 'your tribe' is beyond belief and when individuals rule to exploit the innocent and the indefensible, action is needed to bring them to heel.

Where are the good men and women?

Sudan's President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has made a meaningless gesture to save his own ass. He issues a declaration, but makes no physical moves to stop the violence. This is the legacy of 'talking about the issues.'

"I hereby announce our immediate unconditional ceasefire between the armed forces and the warring factions, provided that an effective monitoring mechanism is put into action and observed by all involved parties," Mr Bashir said.

And because there will be at least one or two whackjobs with rifles who won't stop wreaking havoc, he can then point at them and say "Hey, I tried. It's those other ones that don't want to commit to a peaceful solution." And then he'll be scot free to continue the clusterfuck.
