Dozens of people were killed in the French Riviera city of Nice late on Thursday when a truck plowed into crowds watching a fireworks display on France's Bastille Day national holiday, the mayor said on Twitter.​

French TV channel BFM TV initially reported at least 30 people were killed as a crowd was celebrating.

The president of the Nice region says at least 60 are dead.

A spokesman for France's Interior Ministry said the death toll is likely to rise.

"It's going to be a very high toll," Pierre-Henry Brandet told BFM TV.

"A truck rammed into the crowd over a long distance, which explains this extremely heavy toll," Sebastien Humbert, the prefect for the Alpes-Maritime area said on BFM TV.

Humbert said the truck driver had been shot dead and that he was treating the incident, which he said left 100 injured, as an attack.

You should try being the generation they introduced the metric system. Up to 160 klicks I think metric. Over 100 mph I go back to Imperial. Same with temp. Is 46F cold? Over 100C or 212F I go back to Imperial. Liquid measure is Imperial, dry measure is sometimes Imperial and sometimes metric. Lengths are Imperial.

Another generational gap when kids ask how long is a foot.

And in Canada we have exports that go south and are still Imperial. Less and less though. Doubles the amount of tools you need.

If you guys went SI (metric) and adopted Robertson screws everywhere it would be so much easier.

Daesh Minister of War was a Chechen not an Arab. Not all are Arabian. Lots of Kazakhs, Uzbeks and Tajiks there too.

Would take a million soldiers to effectively take the gloves off and sweep the region clean of radicals. Which might only last a few years.

Destabilizing the Saudi regime and some Gulf states may be the best bet. Be costly though. With only NA oil to be had.

Solving this problem would mean removing western involvement from the middle east, and the west doesn't want a stable middle east.

We'd have to stop propping up dictators that are friendly to corporate interests, and for the sake of keeping oil cheap.

Solving this problem would mean taking a good, hard look at ourselves and what we're doing to help cause it.

But when it's almost-constantly happening in US & other countries, brought-on by people from the country it happens in & others, the nicer people care, pray, hash-tag, etc. while villains (Orlando, France, Charleston, etc.) figure everyone who reads about the murders they commit will blame it on ISIS/Al-Qaeda (or that group will take responsibility to nurture fear of them, rep, etc.), & the actual perps will get away with it.

I think that here in the US, we need some common sense truck control.

The important thing for France now is more Muslim outreach and an increased effort by UNARMED police to protect them in their neighborhoods and mosques from right-wing idiots who will take out their frustration on a blameless religion and its followers. That truck driver was not a "real" Muslim. Just a nutter of some sort, we'll figure out that by the end of the day in a consensual manner once those at the top come up with their story line.
