New story posted: The Training: Chapter 3. It's a chain story.

It's got an average vote of 4.74 and 27 people have voted. But nobody has bothered to e-mail me. Is this unusual or have I just been lucky with my other efforts?

I've only ever had two pieces of (unsolicited) feedback. Both were for the same story, my piece about Martina Hingis. In total, I have received 85 votes between my four stories. My ratings aren't as high as yours, but even so, it doesn't sound that unusual to me, especially since you request votes, and thus presumably get more than most of us.

Of course, I'm sure if you ask nicely, we'll give you some feedback.

Cheers,

Eros

Feedbacks

That seems odd to me, however I didn't get much feedback for my chain story, either.

One of my stories, however, was UNABLE to receive feedback - i got feedback from other stories mentioning how they couldn't email me from the particular one...hmm...maybe that's going on?

I got my first story posted today. Have 15 votes and three feedback so far. Feedback thingy must be working.

I was wondering the same thing.

I/we just posted our 1st two stories, and while we are happy with the ratings, are disappointed in the lack of feedback.

Three to date for both stories (39 & 32 votes repectively). Although one was very well done and much appreciated.

I've given up trying to figure out who or why anyone votes or writes. Yesterday a new chapter went up on a story of mine. As of tonight I've had 68 votes and 82 feedback emails. Now what is that all about? You'd think if you were taking the time to write, you'd vote too.

My latest story just came out and it's had only 4 votes and no feedback. :(

Earl, I was going to give you feedback, but I couldn't remember how to spell jozxyqk

Just kidding, I just couldn't resist. :)

My one story here got 160 + votes and I only netted about 8 feedbacks. (11 if you count the illiterate ones) So that makes it about 1 feedback for every 20 votes.

Three stories (one of them multi-part), one poem. 85 votes total--I just went to check--and about half a dozen feedbacks, IIRC. So yeah, there are not a lot of people who bother to write comments. That's too bad, since comments are what makes it worth taking the trouble to post things, IMO. Yes, I do send feedbacks when I read, but not all the time, I admit.

On the other hand, I have not yet had any of the drunk/illiterate/weirdo feedbacks that some people have complained about receiving here. Only a matter of time, I am sure. ;-)

The only feedback I've gotten for my chain stories came from fellow chain story authors.

I still haven't gotten any feedback. This is very strange, considering the quite positive feedback I've gotten on the others, which (except for the Genesis 19 riff) are set in the same milieu with the same characters. Well, I'm fixing to come out with a new group of stories anyway...

No feedback is not unusual. I've learned not every story you write, regardless of what you, as the author, think of it, will prompt another person to want to say "boo." It's unfortunate, but true...

But we mustn't let it discourage us! We must write in the face of no feedback! Not because it is demanded of us, but simply because we MUST! We continue, in spite of the chirping of the crickets, because maybe, just maybe, the next one will prompt someone to write back, "Nice job."

A new story of mine just went up, it has two votes, and both are 1's as that is the average. So no matter what anybody else honestly votes for the story, it will never make it to the top ten in the voting catagory. Now normally I would have waited until morning to see if any of my stories had been published here, but this time I was online anyway at 3am in the morning so I checked. And what do ya know Bed-n-Brunch Ho was posted, and it had 1 view, and 2 votes, averaging 1.00 for the vote count, how nice. Now I could do the same thing to every new story published here too, but I won't. You see, even with these childish attacks, my stories always average out above 4.30 by those who really read them. So I'm terribly sorry if I'm not a part of the clique in here, but I'll let my stories talk for me about how well I can write.

No feedback is not unusual.

It was for me. I mean, I'd gotten feedback on every single story I'd written previously. I guess I got spoiled. I have interpreted it as a sign that I need to start another series. However, I am still very fond of the gang of people I started off writing about, and have not despaired of mainstreaming them into a novel at some point. Basically, it's in my head--it's just a matter of getting it written down.

It was an unusual experience for me. I have several stories in several different fields and I've still got feedback on all of them. I even have a groupie (just the one) who follows my stories and waits for a new one. He/she gives feedback almost as soon as it goes up usually.

The shock was doubled by the fact that I got about 20 from my last story (A How-To). I feel so lonely <sob>.

Out of five stories, I think I only recieved feedback on two of them. I don't think the quality of any of them was particularly bad (At least no worse than the others) but those two just seemed to rake in the feedback.

Chance I guess.

I just got some feedback, and it's positive! I feel ever so much better!

Actually, I think GETTING feedback is the unusual thing, rather than the other way around. I've got 13-14 stories out there now, and I can't honestly say I've received feedback on them all. I think of the first 3 stories I submitted, a little over a year ago, I think only *one* of those received any kind of feedback whatsoever.

You just have to keep going, because we all know the readers are out there, they have to be, due to the fact that *once in a while* we actually hear them say something.

Tony: as long as those characters you're talkng about keep telling you episodes in their lives, keep writing about them. Trust me, if there are still stories about them to tell, if you don't get them written down, they will drive you nuts until you do.

they will drive you nuts until you do.

Sometimes I wonder if it's not too late:)

Anyway, I noticed where the story had crept up into the 4 range, which was heartening.

Something else: don't let the vote thing become an important part of your satisfaction/dissatisfaction with all this. That WILL drive you nuts.

I know if you aren't receiving any other kind of feedback that the votes are *sort* of an indication of the merit of a story, but almost *everywhere* on these authors' forums there are horror stories of real good ratings for a while, then WHAM, some idiot votes it right down the shitter for no apparent reason.

So be careful about hanging a lot of weight on votes, as well. I guess ultimately, you have to have some degree of personal confidence regarding the integrity of your writing, damn everything else, because you can't rely on the readers out there to do anything that makes sense.

I wrote an essay as part of the survivor contest and I have to say the feedback I've gotten on it is much more passionate than my usual feedback. People have written me very long essays to tell me how very very very very wrong I am and have given me the long historic examples to talk about it in other countries and times. Which makes me wonder if they ever even read it or saw the title and just started firing away. Who knew an essay could stir up so much shit? I honestly expected it to fade quietly into the background and obscurity. Silly me.

But the positive feedback has been tremendous too.

Votes & Ratings

Hi,

I am a new writer and my first story was placed on here on 01/02/03.

Todate, my story has been viewed 2196 times but only has 10 votes given an average of 4.00. I realise that this rating is meaningless given the small number of votes.

Is this a normal ratio of votes to viewings?

Or do I interpret my story is not worthy of votes and therefore must do better?

Do other authors give much credance to this ratings system?

On a positive note, it was nice to see that it had a large number of viewings.

I do intend to persevere.

Rodopi.....

Rodopi,

There are dozens of threads here dealing with, "What's going on?" That is, authors of all shapes and sizes wondering why the readers read the stories, but for whatever reason, don't take the time to vote, give feedback, whatever.

I think, maybe, of all the statistics we authors should pay most attention to is that first one you mentioned: the number of readers. There is NO predicting what will prompt a reader to vote OR tell you, "Good job/Bad job."

Don't get me wrong, the readers are fine people. If it wasn't for them, there'd be little sense in wasting the time to compose all this dreck. The primary thing I'm saying is: don't try to analyze read/vote or read/feedback or read/vote/feedback ratios, because there's no rhyme or reason to it.

It would most likely take an advanced course in chaos mechanics to figure out exactly what happens from one story to the next, as far as these items you, and most of us, are trying to figure out, but, of course, as chaos goes, the outcome will be different every time, anyway.

So, anyway, it's good to hear you're going to keep on going, because you can't rely on the readers (god love 'em) to give that boost you might think you need. It's hard to work in a vacuum, but at times, it's necessary.

Something that would be good to do is start communicating with other authors out here in cyberland. A lot of the time, you can count on them to give good, constructive feedback on your work, feedback you can use to improve your writing.
