27,200

Its a bad thought to think, but they know exactly were they are, its just a matter of finding what is left of them.

Honesty sucks, but its true. :(

Worse than I had thought, by far.

By midnight last night, it was very clear that the only survivors being discovered are rescue workers who were on the lower stories when the towers fell. We cannot hope for much at all. I'm only beginning to comprehend this.

Oh, and that cloud that's enveloping the city is full of asbestos....

not accounted for. Hopefully that number will drop.

:(
OMG, I hadn't heard a number yet.

Imagine the memorial that would take. The chairs in Oklahoma are perfect for the Murrah building bombing memorial. But 27,000+ chairs would fill half of a stadium. Not just a park lawn.

My God! There's barely that many living in my town!

i don't know what to say.

With the invention on the computer and then the internet, even when you're a thousand miles away, it still affects you. i talk to people on my forums/chat board that are from New York and have lost friends and loved ones in this tragedy.

It's a sadness beyond comprehension. i can not even begin to imagine what everyone else is feeling.

Re: My God! There's barely that many living in my town!

ChaoticLil, until you put it that way, I couldn't wrap my mind around that number... But since you gave me some sort of perspective, now I realize that it's actually almost twice the size of my town - I can't even begin to imagine every single person in this town, and then some, gone in an instant.

that is 9 (yes you read that right NINE) times the size of my "town".. i can't imagine.. it's sickening..

VERY

I live near Ball State University, it only has 30,000 students.

I don't think the county i live in even has that many people in it.. and it's a pretty good size county.. just no major cities are located in it..

Wow i had not thought of it that way. That is right about the size of my college. Really gives you a perspective that way.

Fox was running a "crawl" that listed the names on the flight manifest and thier home towns. It took forever, and that was just those on the planes. I can't imagine a listing of the victoms on the ground. If we ever know all of those names.

Somewhat better news.........latest estimates greatly reduced. No one seems to want to make an estimate, and NEW YORK has ordered 6,000 body bags from the U.S. Government. Hopefully the number will stay below 10,000.

The number requested as of this morning is 11,000.

I saw an interview last night

With some of the rescue people. They said due to the force and weight of the collapsing towers, bodies were obliterated, ground to dust. Not a trace of a human being left! How many will never be found....

Not even that many live in my hometown ...

27,000 individuals!!!

Thats over 3.5 times the population that live in the county I grew up in.

There were barely that many people living in a four county area of the western United States that I grew up in.

These four counties cover over 30,000 square miles!!!!!

I keep checking my figures and calculations!!

I even pulled out a map and measured the area and it DOES cover more that 30,000 square miles!!! UNBELEIVABLE!!

I'm just trying to gain some comprehension, based on my life, of the MAGNITUDE of this loss of life, and I keep coming back to this thought!

I just cannot, or perhaps DO NOT, want to comprehend the full magnitude of this loss..

It may not be that many. 11,000 body bags are requested.

But, it does help to understand just what that number means if you try to relate it to something you can understand and put your arms around, like the population of your town.

Thats just it!

It is so many people that, in my perspective, everyone within a 50 mile radius would have just disappeared where I grew up.

This helps me to understand the magnitude of the loss.

Also -

Thousands upon thousands of people can't reach their homes, whch are slowly being destroyed by smoke (and water, when it starts raining later). Many are losing their pets, whom they were forced to leave behind. It's now clear that subway service will not be fully restored for at least three months, and that's probably extremely optimistic. Thousands of businesses will be bankrupted by this attack, large and small. The destruction will reverberate for many years. Even now, there's a manhunt in Staten Island as the cops pursue a Cadillac they believe connected to the conspirators. The toxic cloud now blows toward Brooklyn, thick as ever. Life in NYC has been irrevocably changed, on every level. Gloom pervades.

OMG! The Pets! Seriously.

Someone has to go in and get them. This isn't fair to them either.

I want to go to NY now. :(

Yes, the pets -

The city can't even address the problem, hasn't told the people who can't reach their homes anything. I begin not to see how NYC ever will be the same again. And the prospect of this happening again is so real, so likely. And what's really weird? All we can see, with our naked eyes, is a void and a lot of smoke. And we can smell it. And feel it. But saving the pets would be a good start, given that everyone nearby is already gone.
