.

I think it is becoming more accepted. There was a time when bdsm= some greasy mass killer torturing and killing unwilling victims. In the eyes of Hollywood that is.

I think that it is the flavor of the week. Look at all the people that are wearing Goth outfits. I would say that about 80% have no idea what the meaning of the items they are wearing is. They just like the look and feel of them.

I went to a fair (BDSM) and say several women wearing nice looking collars and when I asked them about them, they said they did not know that the collar meant anything besides looking good.

it is becomeing more main stream in fashion..i mean look at hot topic. the goth/ punk/ industrial culture has always had an infusion of this element. some of them are actualy into bdsm, some of them just like the look, some of them like the symbolism behind it but don't really play very much in the bdsm relm

i will say origonaly the people who brought the element into music-fashion were doing so for the shock horror appeal they wanted to look bad, and frightening...because alot of them were trying to break down the norm with thier music, life styles, and choices.

however now it's become more mainstream, with your pop-punk revival crap, and people like marlyn manson who made a case study out of past performers like nevik ohgr of skinny puppy (who would actualy wrap him self in various things, like sran wrap, barbed whire, yes real barbed whire, wear fetish boots, and beat the holy crap out of himself on stage. ) and don't really hurt themselves, like bondage, or are really all that intrested in the bdsm culture... but like the look of it and the shock appeal it gets/used to get. because let's face it, that's a big part of what made his money.

so i think more modern pop bands that you will be seeing on mtv, like blink 182 or no doubt are just imitateing some people they've seen in the past. Punk rockers from the glory days' in the 70's wore bondage pants, torn up shirts, and spiked collars/everything else. so they are bringing in elements of this.

also never underestimate the people behind the secenes of our modern consumer culture. after all pop bands often have littel to no say in how thier video's work, or thier wardrobe...after all they hire a staff to keep up with current trends and advise/select for them waht to wear and how to wear it. now that's not to say that the staff that keeps these people looking pretty aren't themselves very kinky (among other things) and getting a good laugh out of thier clients danceing around on stage looking like thier subby did last wednessday while they flogged her.

Madoona has been including it for a long whie in her video's, most noteable being Erotica and Justify My Love. Then we had the hint of alternative sexuality practices from INXS which at the time raised a few eyebrows. Think one of the classiest kinky presentations in videoclip would have to be the crop play with Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams in Somethin Stupid.

The avant garde has always fed the mainstream its look.

Music videos borrow, liberally from avant garde sources, even ones as obscure as films by Maya Deren and Stan Brakhage.

Why?

*the people who make this crap all went to art school*

Bottom line.

If SM shows up, watered down, it's probably because the people making the images want not to be bored to tears.

Advertising is littered with creative, savvy and probably quite underground-hip bodies.

Marilyn Manson doesn't "really" hurt himself? I must have confused myself on that line. I am a HUGE manson fan, have read, and seen, many many things he has done, including seeing him/them in concert twice. He used to brake bottles and grind the glass into his flesh, he also used to cut large slices into his body during a performance. Yeah, some of what he has done may have been done before, but lets face it, everything we say, everything we do, almost always, it has been done before by someone...and I haven't seen another band do what he is doing right now GAOTG...

Some years ago, Joan Jett did a little number called "French Song", where's she's running around in skin-tight PVC, leading a couple of "French maids" on leashes, and so forth. Looked pretty damn good....

And didn't you just love the rings, car, everything in the 'Tainted Love' clip? Yum in the highest degree...and he is one of the few men who can look hot strutting the stage in thigh high leather boots, long, open, black leather coat and a small leather g-string.

don't get me started, he is one of the most attractive men I can think of...*grrr*...I really enjoyed the tainted love video...I like the goth make over they did on the nerdy chick...I have craploads of manson videos on my computer, as well as several live concert clips, and some interviews...and even a couple cartoons, like when he was on clone high...Something about his voice as well, I swear to the gods I almost had an orgasm once, just by putting on the headphones and listening to a CD (think it was antichrist)...ok, yeah, keeping with the topic at hand, um, bondage, and music videos, and um...too distracted...
