2112: Project Epsilon

May 13th, 2112

Across the country men in black vans pulled up to different locations. They jumped out, rushing in buildings. Before the occupants could react, they were knocked unconscious and bound.

Across the country innocent citzens were carried out of their homes and thrown in the back of the vans.

Hours later they wake in a cold metal room. The room is dark, with no visible door, only a small cot. They find that they are wearing a dark grey jumpsuit that does little to keep them warm in the cold cell.

Suddenly one of the steel walls begins to move, a man enters. He is an older gentleman, balding and wearing a well-tailored suit. Another man follows behind him with a chair which he places on the floor in front of the cot. The older gentleman signals and the younger man leaves. He sits down in the chair and begins to speak:

"Welcome. I hope you faired well in your journey." He adjusts his glasses and his blue eyes seem to read their thoughts. "You have been recruited to Project Epsilon. You have the... skills we are looking for. I expect you will come to appreciate the work we do here, but for now your cooperation is expected. Do you have any questions? If not, Agent Eversilver will take you for evaluations."

Agent Eversilver, as it happened, was currently sitting in a poorly lit corner of the room, his eyes passing over each of the recruits as his mind made passes at theirs to determine their respective strengths.

Cassandra K. Holden :

‘She is coming to…Start recording…Go tell the Doctor…’

Ahhhh! The pain. The dryness in the mouth. Spit tasted like yesterday’s lunch gone bad.

Cassandra lay prone for a few more moments, fluttering her eyelids in rapid succession trying discern her surroundings, more to determine if this is heaven or hell that she had woken up to.

The white metallic walls was unlike anything that she had seen before. Almost perfectly square. Almost perfectly sterile too.

Cassandra groaned trying to sit up. The smooth metallic bier on which she was lying was getting cold. Then she realized that she was not wearing her own clothes.

‘…Where are my clothes?…’

‘…I know I had a jacket, before passing out…’

‘…How on earth did I passed out…’

‘…What the hell is going on…’

‘…Where am I…’

All questions and no answers. Cassandra slowly tried to get on her feet as her eyes started to adjust to her surroundings. The pain was slowly subsiding, although there was a slight irritating and incessant ringing in her ears. There were others in the room with her. But with her head still spinning, she ignored the others, preferring instead to gather her own thoughts.

The metallic walls were smooth and cold to the touch. Cassandra was glad that it did not reflect clearly enough to see her face and hair. One thing at a time.

Tracing her fingers along the wall, she walked, more to get some blood circulating and clear the cobwebs in her head at the same time. She walked until coming upon a door. Typical electromagnetic sliding door. The workmanship was exquisite though, the faint lines of the door barely noticeable. Would not budge, no control panel, would not respond to any voice commands. She wondered about all the clichés about people having no imagination whatsoever. At least they could have made a prison cell more ‘accommodating’. A lot more color and a lot less intimidation. And a lot less cold. Ha! Dream on, said Cassandra to herself . She realized that she had finally accepted the fact that she is in some kind of prison.

She sat down again, drawing her legs up with her chin resting on her knees, trying to sort through all the bits and pieces of memories that are now returning. The last thing that she remembered was the face of a man. He features are not too clear right now, but his voice. There was something about his voice. It was hypnotic, compelling even. That was the last thing that she remembered before darkness overtook her.

The opening of the door, quiet and smooth, jolted Cassandra out of her reverie. In walked a man, distinguished looking, not unlike the image of Sigmund Freud, thought a bemused Cassandra.

The other man that followed looked a like the face that Cassandra remembered before passing out.
Sitting in the middle of the room, the older gentleman spoke first.

‘Welcome. I hope you faired well in your journey. You have been recruited to Project Epsilon. You have the... skills we are looking for. I expect you will come to appreciate the work we do here, but for now your cooperation is expected. Do you have any questions? If not, Agent Eversilver will take you for evaluations."

Cassandra did not trusted herself to speak, so she quietly shook her head in response to that question. Time enough to ask questions. Time enough to realize the danger that she had inadvertently gotten herself into.

Lauren H. Byrnes

Lauren had barely regained consciousness, the words of the old man coming to her in waves. She took some time to realize she was no longer home, and even more time to make sense of what was just said. "Skills(?)... what are... you... talking... about..."

Suddenly realizing her situation, she tried to get up, but her cold and numbed body failed to respond accordingly, and all she could do was to shout "Who in the hell are you? What do you want from me? Let me go, you've got no idea who you're dealing with! I've got money! I've got friends in high places! I've got more power than you could imagine! Let me out, or I promise, you will be sorry!..."

Kelson watched impassively, well...neither was a large surprise...pity that one had been subdued so quickly...she would need some work.

Cassandra K. Holden :

‘Brat,’ she muttered under her breath.

Someone, somewhere would soon put this High Socialite in her place. Always thumbing their noses at others.

Cassandra began to quietly evaluate Eversilver. He was the quiet one, and handsome. Quiet ones are always the most dangerous. Cassandra made a mental note to befriend him, as soon as the opportunity present itself. Never hurt to have friends amongst the ‘prison wardens’ when you are trying to break out of prison.

The Doctor

Cassandra was submissive, that worked to his purposes, but Lauren...

He grabbed her roughly around her upper arm and looked into her eyes.
"Be still or I will have Mr. Eversilver restrain you, and he is not the gentleman I am."

Lauren H. Byrnes

"Yes, sir" came out of her mouth before she could even think. Lauren's submissiveness was as sudden as it was unusual in her. Startled by this, she rapidly gauged the forces in play here and decided to play along. There was no way to go against him, for now. Her reaction had been instinctive, yes, but there was something artificial about it. He made her say that... Either way, she needed to learn everything there is to learn about the old man. Forget about the Eversilver guy, he's just the local bully... If you want to get out of here, this is the way, sprung into her mind...

Aria Ray

A deep chill crawled up my spine as my eyes slowley opened. The bright lights reflecting off the cold metal walls made it hard for me to see for a few seconds. A voice echoed throught the cell and startled me. Strangley enough, I didn't flinch, I felt fear but I didn't flinch.

I tried to rise and move around but nothing was happening. I went to try and speak but I could't even move my jaw to speak. I managed to push my tounge though my teeth, letting the bitter taste in my mouth dry out in the cool air. Had I been drugged?

The Doctor

"Mr. Eversilver, would you please wake up Mr. Firstorn, he appears to be enjoying his nap."

Kelson stood and walked over to the sleeping form, a pair of kicks to the stomach were quick to wake him. The swift kicks delivered, Kelson walked back to his corner.

Cassandra K. Holden

Trying to suppress laughter and shock at the same time was not easy. So Cassandra just hovered in between.

Gosh, it was just like the old carrot and stick proposition. If you do not like the carrot, the big stick comes. She silently wondered at what the ‘carrot’ would be. Would have to be substantial enough to go through all the trouble of kidnapping and confining all those that were in the room right now.

Cassandra felt sorry for Firstorn. She did not wish that kind of treatment on anyone. Even for Ms. High & Mighty Pants. Ha! She was wearing the same gray burlap clothes as we were. No separation of class happening around here.

The Doctor is IN

"Well, now that everything seems to be settled, lets begin."

He snapped his fingers and two more intimidating agents entered the room.

"Mr. Thompson, please take Cassandra to exam room 4 and begin evaluation procedures. If she causes any trouble, I expect you will be able to handle the situation." Mr. Thompson crooked a finger and beckoned Cassandra Holden to follow.

"And Ms. Fields, if you will drag Gavin to exam 2, I believe we have that prepped for him." Ms. Fields proceeded to half-drag half kick the barely concious man from the room.

"Now Mr Eversilver, I believe you will be more than a match for these two." He indicated Lauren and Aria, "take them to exam 1 and begin testing. I'll be in my office."

With that the Doctor turned and strode out the door.

"Miss Byrnes and Miss Ray, please follow me. When we are within the examination room, I will brief you on why you are here and what I will be doing. I have been special ops and one of my favorite sports is no-holds-barred TaeKwonDo matches...do not try anything. I don't want to hurt you, nor does the Doc want me to, lets just try to get along. This way now."

With that, Eversilver went over to the west side of the room, hits a series of numbers on a digital keypad, then gestures for the pair to enter the pure white room.

Lauren H. Byrnes

Lauren suppressed a scream when her companion of misfortune was beaten. She thought that it could have so easily been her sent shivers down her spine and for the first time she took a look around the room to see those in the same situation as her. It was an odd group. The big fellow contorting with pain on the floor, a young athletic woman barely conscience of what was going on, like herself had been just seconds ago, and that other girl, the one that had awaken earlier. Lauren caught a certain degree of contempt in her eyes, immediately realizing this one would be trouble. She was the first to wake up ... if she was sleeping in the first place ... As far as I know, she could be with them ... Look at her: it looks like she's almost smiling!

"Bitch", Lauren said under her breath, just as The Doctor, whomever he was, ordered them to be taken for testings... "I guess the time for getting answers has expired whilst we slept" she said to his back, as he was getting out of the room, but she let the words die without conviction. This was not the time for confrontation.

What else was there to do? This clearly wasn't the time for action, first thing to do was to find out what was happening. To gather as much information as possible. Starting by finding what do the four of us have in common...

So as they entered the white room, Lauren turned to the woman the agent had called Ray and, with her best, most friendly smile said "Hi, I'm Lauren! I think we should be friends, don't you, hun? What's your name? What do you think they would want you for?"

Kelson gave Lauren a peculiar look, one eyebrow cocked.

I'll never understand these civilians...kidnapped from home in a place they have no idea about with individuals who could kill them in an instant...and yet not only do they carry on as if nothing was wrong, but they actively insult those individuals...

"Be quite, go sit in the chair over there..." Kelson pointed to a padded metal recliner to the right.

"Miss Ray, go sit in the chair to the left."

Aria Ray

Someone kept calling me but I was still unable to move a muscle. How the hell do they expect me to follow them to some examing room if I can't move.

Kelson frowned slightly...why wasn't she moving? No matter.

His instructions given to Lauren, Kelson walked back over, picked Aria up with a single arm around the abdomen, and brought her into the examination room, shutting the door behind him.

Lauren gave the agent a glacial look, as he dragged away her only potencial allie, numb as she was... With a shrug she walked to the chair the agent had indicated, sat down and waited for the worse to come...

Cassandra K. Holden

Cassandra meekly followed Thompson out of the room. She had a last glance at the others as they were filing out. Seemed strange that Ms. High & Mighty Pants was following at all after her outburst. Guess some people do learn after all.

She hoped that Firstorn would recover, because if he doesn’t, it was going to be a long day for him.

She hoped that whatever the evaluation was, she would soon find out what all the hubbub was about.

The Doctor

Sitting back in his swivel chair he watched the proceedings on the monitor.

"First we'll find out what they can do, and then we'll find out what they're made of."

He lit his pipe and slowly nursed the forbidden pleasure. Being in charge had it's advantages.

He looked back to the monitor and watched as Mr. Eversilver "helped" the women into the room. A small smile appeared at the corner of his lips.

He then glanced over as Cassandra entered the room, yes this one could be useful . Studies had shown that "stressful" experiences could bring out latent psychic abilites, lets just hope it wasn't too painful, or damaging.

Kelson smiled at the pair, it actually was a rather charming, bordering on handsome smile. Now began the fun part...

"Okay, my name is Kelson Eversilver. You have now been enrolled into the Epsilon Project as recruits. This is as much for your own good as for our benefit. You see, you have been...given? I suppose it is a close enough word...hmm, maybe gifted works better. At any rate, you have these powers. I'm sure you have noticed them before."

Kelson looks at Lauren studiously for a moment while he speaks, "Perhaps you could make others seem to slow down...or make things move with no one near them...maybe you could tell people things without your voice, or force them to do what you want."

Kelson's gaze shifts to Aria, "Up until now, I'm sure you've passed it off as mere coincidence...I did for the longest time. The Doctor here taught me better though. We are, all of us here in this complex except the lower level guards, who take medication each month to be immune to the mind-altering effects, have these powers."

Satisfied with his observations, Kelson returns to looking at the obviously concious Lauren.

"You are here to be trained. We plan to guide you in your education of your powers. There are no tricks, no smoke or mirrors, and I am not fooling with you. Out there is a very real, very dangerous world. Even now it threatens America. I'm sure your parents told you stories of the American break up by terror organizations in decades past. That could happen again, but you are here to stop it...to keep America as the world's premier power."

"My job is to examine and train you. In just a moment I will engage your mind in order to test your abilities, but you will be required to strap down into the chair to prevent any...problems. I promise not to injure you in anyway. This training will also prevent you from potentially hurting yourself with these powers."
