I don't care much about costumes and what nots, but Venice is one of my favorite cities.

The thing about the costumes that really gets me is that these people make them themselves. All the jewelry, flowers, and whatnot which are part of their costume is fake.

Which is kind of cool because the whole image presented by the costume is supposed to be fake in order to conceal the wearer from being identified. Making a false image out of false stuff.

People come from all over just for this. There are people in other countries who spend all year making a costume just to wear it in Venice for 2 weeks and there are tourists who come especially just for this.

To me it's better than Mardi Gras in Rio or NOLA because a lot of that is done for money by money. This isn't. The performers aren't paid. They will pose for pictures but won't talk to you or anyone else at all. And, if you ask too much of them, they'll walk away and disappear.

Until I read this thread I had no idea anything like this existed. I love looking at all the various costumes and masks. Lots of detail work and craftsmanship on display. Plus, from what you’ve just relayed, lots of mystery and intrigue as far as the folks wearing the costumes. It’s another event to put on my bucket list. Who says porn sites have no culture! LOL!

I have always wanted to attend this event. The city has been sinking for almost as long as it has existed but the recent flooding just put a finer point on it. Go while there is still a Venice to go to!

Look into the history of wearing a mask in Venice. It'll surprise you.

Masked balls (that made me laugh) always remind me of that scene in Eyes Wide Shut, and then disappointment sets in on how well it could have been written and performed, but wasn't. :)

The biggest fail I see is when visitors go to Venice thinking it's a costume party.

It's pretty funny to see pictures of people walking around bare faced in what's basically a Halloween costume thinking they're part of the local scenery when everyone else is wearing period looking outfits and wearing masks.

I went to a masked Mardi gras party at an old boss' house who was rich as fuck and was rather glad that no orgys broke out. :)

Who would want to have an orgy with an "old" boss? Even putting aside the fact that its your "boss", being "old" might not be the best condition to be in when having an orgy.

Although if you're gonna go, that might be the way to do it. :)
