It was a banner fucking weekend of movie watching here at the Casa del Lasher. We rented two DVDs this weekend and both kicked ass...

#1 Was "Fight Club"...I won't go into too much detail here (well, any), but I'm pretty damn happy that Brad Pitt didn't fall into the pretty boy movie making trap that Tom Cruise did.

#2 Was "Being John Malkovic"...A pretty damn novel idea, and the second funniest word in the English language (after "girth") is "Malkovic"....

Anyways, it was nice to find a couple of movies that didn't involve asteriods or prehistoric TV shows, and both come highly recommended by someone who really hates all the mainstream bullshit that jams our theatres today.

I was pleasantly surprised when I watched Fight Club. :) Going just on the previews, I didn't think I'd like it. It turned out to be wickedly great!

One to not waist your time (or money) on is Small Time Crooks staring Woody Allen. I believe he was the director of it too. It's a low budget, slightly boring movie that quickly leaves the origional story line. I got up to go to the rest room, and suddenly it was like I was at a whole new movie.

Another movie I was surprised to find I liked is Center Stage. It's basically about the hardships and sacrifice of young adults in the balet world. It has some god humorous scenes in it too. :) There's also some very beautiful young actors in it.

Lash - 'Being John Malcovic', was that the one by Spike Jonze who did the Daft Punk video? I saw an interview with him. He's hilarious.

Have you seen 'Buffalo 66' by Vincent Galiano? That's really cool and it's got Christine Ricci, which is a bit of a bonus.

I thought 'Slums of Beverly Hills' was good. And Steve Buscemi's film, 'Trees Lounge'. It's like that Charles Bukowski 'Bar Fly' movie with Faye Dunaway & Mickey Rourke - only funnier.

Fight Club was an awesome flick. I watched another good movie last night, Stir of Echoes. I was really suprised at how much I liked it.

Lasher, I thought "being..." was one of the most creative movies in years. I was blown away by Cameron Diaz (talk about ditching the whole "beauty image thing") and the rest of the cast. I am a huge John Cusack fan so it was a given i would see it. i'm waiting for High Fidelity to hit DVD any day.
Not as creative, but a good movie none the less is The Thirteenth Floor. Quite thought provoking.

movies that kick ass......I would have to say that The Matrix is one of my all times favourites......please nobody pelt me with rotten tomatoes...

...not even "Fried Green Tomatoes"????

My faves

Enemy Mine
Breakfast Club
Dances With Wolves
Schindler's List

...not necessarily in that order

.....and the Monty Python crap too

AHHHHHHHHHH

<quickly strips out of the offending garment and pulls a crate of dubious looking tomatoes send several of them in nexxus' direction>

Okay wild...All my tomatos are now aimed at AO-fucking-L. AAAAAGGGGGHHHH.
I am a Monty Python (more over a Terry Gilliam fan) fan ("It's waifer thin", "Bucket for miseur?")so i guess I have to be nice.
Siren I'm confused (big surprise, huh?), did you say the last movie you saw was "Cocoon?"
Rent "The Usual Suspects" first...everything else will follow.
Also "My Favorite Year" is a fine choice.

no you ninny......what she said is something along the lines of she had no life last year so she doesn't remember anything......sorry if that offended...it wasn't meant to.

HEY! WILD! Welcome!
stand behind me, ive got an industrial size salsa maker,so let the tomatoes fly!
The Matrix was great! And as far as Pyhton goes."SHE'S A WITCH BURN HER"

You know - I think ole Nexxy was having a bit of a chuckle with that line.

Anyway - welcome to da' BB, Wild Child. I would've popped into your party but I'm not really the partying type.

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOH!!!!! FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN POSTS!!!!

Who's for a party?

rog

Doesn't seem that long ago since I had my 300th.

I'll bring the martinis and wear my best matching lingerie in mmmm pink.... LETS PARTY PEOPLE!!!!!!! I have a 20 bottles of tequila and Roger promised to bring the music.

BTW two thumbs up where???

Have to agree with Kerrie on the Woody Allen movie. Basically, it is his homage to The Marx Brothers and to The Honeymooners. The neatest thing in the movie is the sly dig at the public scorn he has taken in the opening minute of the movie. Woody is reading a paper that has the sports headline of "NBC says Yes! to Marv Albert" Here is Woody Allen ditched and dismembered over a consensual relationship with another adult who he is still with while Marv can dress up in women's clothes, bite and sodomize women and all is forgiven. So much for the left-wing media conspiracy.

I like Woody's movies since they tend to challenge the audience to keep your brain active. Sometimes he misses but when he hits, it is great.

The best thing happening on the movie front is a re-release of "Blood Simple" that is coming back out later in June. If you never saw it the first time (the video does not really do justice to this film), don't miss the reissue. Nobody does Texas-sleaze like the late M. Emmet Walsh. If you liked Fargo or The Usual Suspects, catch this one when it comes back out.

salsa maker? where!?!!? give it to me dammit!!!!
and I completly agree on the party idea!!!!
ginger you bring the tequila, i'll bring some other from of alcohol and we'll both drive them insane with some skanky undies?

Sorry, guys, but I can't stand Woody Allen. Has nothing to do with the incest thing. I just don't find his movies that funny or entertaining.

Don't know why I felt the need to share that... :p

At any rate, if you live in the LA area and you like dark comedy, try "GO!". I think the script is a clever one, about four friends and one wild night. You may even enjoy it if you aren't from LA, there were just a few references that I think only us valley rats might catch.

I agree with you on "Blood Simple", Ron. Can't wait to catch that one again. Another one for all you thirty-somethings to catch when it comes out is "High Fidelity". I think many of you may be able to relate to it. :)

Oh, I should never get started on movies. I don't seem to know when to stop, so I'll force myself to shut up for now.

So, about this party - who wants to swallow the worm?

Actually, that sounds a bit crude.

Also - it doesn't make much sense unless it's Mescal we're drinking.

GINGAH, babe - can you bring 20 bottles of Mescal, too?

xx

What did you all think of the film version of 'Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas'? I thought it was pretty kool.

i heard it was rather odd, in a not so hot kind of way.....though i never saw it so i wouldn't bee the on to ask.

"What else floats?"
"Wood,"
"Ducks,"
"Small rocks,"
"NO, NO-Witches float"
monty python rules in my book

although I did enjoy these films also
Manhunter
6th Sense
Eating Raoul
Like Water for Chocolate
and of course my favorite movie in the universe, not for its cinematic excellence just for fun is-Highlander

Oh, Earthgoddess. Finally! Someone else who thought "Eating Raoul" was fun.

I agree on Highlander as well, and I LOVE those Python boys.

"I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay..."

How about -

"Crucifixion? One cross each, line forms to the left."

or

"This parrot is deceased..."

Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge... say no more.

k.

I've been cinematically challenged lately, so the last film that I truly enjoyed -- flaws and all -- was The Pillow Book. It was visually stunning; so much so that I was able to ignore the very slight story.

I also liked The Sixth Sense.

I've been in a kind of silent-retro mode lately. Last weekend's double feature was The Gold Rush and The General.

My sides hurt.

Just out of curiousity...and trying not to give anything away...Is there anyone who's seen "Sixth Sense" more than once and still thought it was a good movie??

Cause for me, I spent the whole movie going, "So what's the big deal?" and then when it all comes together in the last 5 minutes, I was like, "Oh, ok, I get it now". But I have no desire to see it again now that I know what happens.

Roger, that was Spike Jonez that directed "Being John Malkovich".

Lasher, I agree that "Being John Malkovich" was a great movie, and so original in a town that is making or remaking a movie out of every story/cartoon/sitcom ever written. I was very disappointed that "Malkovich" didn't get recognized at the Academy Awards.

Gah! Someone else liked "Enemy Mine" besides me and my sister. I haven't thought about that movie in YEARS. I still remember the grandeur and poignancy of that last scene.

Don't know why it popped into my mind, but I thought "Silverado" was perfect. Great cast (Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Kevin Kline (sp?)) before, I think, any of them hit the big time.
