Bank of America Stadium? Never heard of it: Dems

Bank of America Stadium? Never heard of it.

Democrats organizing the party’s national convention in Charlotte, N.C., seem to have forgotten the name of a key venue.

In fundraising messages, the convention host committee has taken to calling the stadium where President Obama will accept the Democratic nomination “Panther Stadium” rather than “Bank of America Stadium.”

The 73,778-seat open-air home of Carolina Panthers football - where Obama is hoping to fire up his base on the final night of the convention in September - was renamed for the financial giant in 2004.

The link to Bank of America may have been an awkward reminder for Democrats of the financial crisis and the still-struggling U.S. economy. The bank sparked accusations of Wall Street greed just last year when it announced a plan to nickel and dime its customers by charging a $5 monthly fee to use its debit cards. The plan was scrapped after a massive uproar.

The convention host committee has also made a point to avoid links to major corporations by sharply limiting their donations to the convention events at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Winston-Salem Journal has reported that so far the convention committee is falling short of its fundraising goals, raising just $20 million toward its $36.65 million target.

President Obama’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee have been struggling to keep pace with the Republicans’ wildly successful fundraising efforts. Donations to Romney and the Republican National Committee outpaced those to Obama and the DNC in both May and June.

Looking to close that gap, Obama is fundraising Tuesday in the bright red state of Texas, where the AP reported he is expected to take in at least $5 million.

Eva Longoria is scheduled to attend the first fundraiser, in San Antonio, which is aimed at the Latino community. The other event, in Austin, is co-sponsored by the Democratic National Committee’s LGBT Council. The president is also attending two private events for major donors.

Romney, meanwhile, is campaigning in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where he is expected to continue charging Obama with “political cronyism” during a rally near Pittsburgh.

The Republican candidate is trying to shift to the offensive after taking heavy fire over his private equity career at Bain Capital and his refusal to release more than two years of tax returns.
