does anyone know what the leather case is, specifically? i know in the picture it is with medals, but i don't know if it is a case for them or for something else.

it is embossed 'ne plus ultra issued 26 july 1848 London' and has an inner and outer sleeve, the end (top) of the inner one with a small and rough (though that may be age of the metal) metal strip attached.

crimea war memorabilia?

i have one for H and would just like to know more about it.

Is there a Brit. version of American Pickers? If yes, that show must have an online forum on knowitalls you can tap.

Could be associated with the Chartist movement.

There were fears in July 1848 that the Chartist movement could occupy London.

not that i know of but there have to be sites that'll know. i thought spectacles, or medals, but it's that strip of metal that confuses me and wondered if it was related to matches in any way - they used to be a lot longer.

ok, could google but maybe you can tell me?

with your knowledge of old stuff, i was hoping you might know what its purpose was :)

It looks like a cigar case.

Ne Plus Ultra was the national motto of Spain. It means, among other things, "nothing beyond" or "nothing better". Spain considered itself the end of the civilised world (before the discovery of the Americas.

London is the confusing part. 1848 was the year of Revolutions in Europe but the Chartist movement in the UK effectively ended in April. The demands of the Chartists eventually reformed democratic processes in England but their mass movement dwindled away in 1848.

oooh, a cigar case - would they have kept strikes in the same case, dya think?

i knew the ne plus ultra phrase, and discovered its origins when i first started looking, but the 'Issued' and 'London', the issued more particularly, had me thinking military connections.

and the crimean didn't start till '53 so it can't be related to that.

it's fun finding this stuff out though. :)

Added:

It WAS the motto of the highest degree of Freemasonry - Kadash.

There are now higher degrees but Ne Plus Ultra is still a Masonic motto for the highest rank.

So IF the owner attained the Masonry rank of Kadash he might have been presented with a cigar case showing the motto, the place and date of achieving that rank.

It would have other markings on it.

Not necessarily. Masons were not supposed to flaunt their membership so if it wasn't for use at a Masonic Temple its meaning would be deliberately obscure (but obvious to fellow Masons).

googling the regiment says they were involved in a war in india only a couple of years prior to 1848, so yeah. that's all i got.

YAY! i KNEW i could rely on you guys here :kiss::kiss:

at least we know it was a cigar case. maybe, if i find time, i can look more into that masonic link. thanks, ogg

Ne Plus Ultra also appeared on Victorian underwear buttons and corkscrews.

In both cases it was meant to mean "the best of its kind".

The Spanish changed their motto from "Ne Plus Ultra" traditionally inscribed on the Pillars of Hercules to "Plus Ultra" after Columbus.

the legend is inside a sort of fancy shield shape and there's a crown above the NE PLUS ULTRA, and on the back it says WARRANTED.

the stitching is really fine on the seams. but best of all, it's so tactile, and such a lovely dark yet mellow colour.
