A Revere woman yesterday said she wants to see the man who invaded her home and beat her on an early July morning in 2006 die in prison, while the three teenage girls he raped during a crime rampage that began hours earlier in Boston said they welcomed the chance to put him behind bars.
The woman and the teenagers delivered emotional victim impact statements yesterday in Suffolk Superior Court, where 30-year-old Eric Morale of Mattapan pleaded guilty to 18 felony charges, including five rape charges, five counts of kidnapping, and five armed robbery charges, in a plea agreement with Suffolk County prosecutors. Judge Charles Spurlock imposed a 15- to 20-year sentence.
Spurlock said that Morale, if given the maximum on each count, faced 13 life terms plus 50 years in prison. Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, said prosecutors agreed to the deal to spare the victims from having to testify about the night of terror and because they had no DNA evidence linking Morale to the crimes.
Morale admitted he kidnapped his first victim, who was 17 at the time, at gunpoint from a Hyde Park Fourth of July celebration, raped her, and forced her at gunpoint to lead him to the Revere home of Bonnie Mehlinger, where Morale raped two 15-year-old girls and beat Mehlinger and her then-14-year-old daughter.
"I just deeply want to say I am totally sorry for what occurred," Morale said before being led out of the courtroom. "I wish them the best in life."
But Mehlinger was unmoved by Morale's apology. She said since the attack in her home about 5:30 the morning of July 5, she has lost her business and both she and her daughter have been hospitalized for treatment of depression.
"I really hope someone kills him in jail; I really do," said Mehlinger, who noted that despite his apologies, Morale has never identified a second man who participated in the violence.
Mehlinger's daughter, now 17, who had a gun pointed to her face during the home invasion, told the court she is unable to understand why Morale turned his violent attention toward her family and the two girls, friends who were sleeping over at the Rice Street home that weekend.
According to Suffolk First Assistant District Attorney Joshua Wall, the first victim did not know Morale before he kidnapped her off the Hyde Park street after midnight.
Morale admitted in court to the kidnapping, and to raping the girl repeatedly in a car. Wall said his accomplice also raped the 17-year-old. Morale also admitted that he threatened to kill her if she did not lead them to money, drugs, or both. Panicked, she brought them to the house of Mehlinger, whom she vaguely knew of through an acquaintance of Mehlinger's son, Scott, a 19-year-old student at Suffolk University.
"I still don't understand why or how anybody could actually do something so disgustingly inhumane," the first victim said in her impact statement. "I am grateful that all of us, though battered, bruised, and emotionally scarred, made it out alive."
That victim - who apologized to Mehlinger and the other victims in a courthouse hallway - said she considered the 15-to 20-year sentence too brief. But, she said, she took comfort in knowing "there will be some 20-odd years with one less scumbag on the street like yourself."
Speaking hurriedly but confidently, one of the two girls raped inside the Revere home said she forgave Morale for what he had done to her, even though she cannot comprehend his actions. "I do forgive you," she said in court. "I hope you learn from this."
The fourth teenager, who was also sexually assaulted, told Morale in a firm, determined voice that he has no power over her. "I am not going to live in fear of you, because I think you're a coward," she said. "Unlike you, I have something to live for and I'm too wise to ever let you bring me down."
In court, Morale's attorney, Arnold Abelow, said Morale is an alcoholic who had drunk cognac and smoked marijuana before the attack. He said Morale and a sister were abandoned by their drug-addicted mother and bounced around Greater Boston while growing up, and that Morale was an intelligent man.
"He's a person who could have been a contender, if you know what I mean," Abelow said in court. "He just couldn't cope with what happened in his life."
