CORRYVILLE – Cincinnati police said a 12-year-old boy is the ringleader of a group that robbed and attacked a man on the street.
Tony Edwards, 18, of Colerain Township, and four juveniles - ages 12, 13, 14 and 15 - were charged with aggravated robbery after a 23-year-old Northern Kentucky man was robbed and pistol-whipped about 11:15 p.m. in Corryville, said Sgt. Calvin Johnson.
Police still are searching for a silver handgun believed to have been used in the attack. So far, they have recovered a BB gun but they aren’t sure if that device or a real gun was used during the robbery, Johnson said.
The victim, Joseph Neltner, was robbed of about $400 and pistol-whipped after leaving a bar on Highland Avenue at University Drive, Johnson said. He told officers he was walking to his car in the 2800 block of Highland Avenue just before 11 p.m. when the group chased and attacked him. He said he was hit in the head with the handgun and had his wallet and cell phone stolen.
He was taken to University Hospital with a head wound but is expected to recover, Johnson said.
Officers were shocked to discover the group was led by the 12-year-old, who is from Westwood.
“Everybody said he was the lead man and was divvying the money up,” Johnson said. “He was talking to me like he was a grown man. I asked him about the gun and he basically told me to go pound salt. I couldn’t believe it was coming out of a little kid’s mouth like that. I got a 12-year-old at home and I can’t imagine this kid is the same age as my 12-year-old.”
The 12-year-old is described as four-foot-one and 65 pounds.
Police caught up with the group about 1 a.m. after spotting the 15-year-old walking on Reading Road.
Others involved in the robbery were found walking nearby, and they led police to the rest of the group at an apartment in the 500 block of Hale Avenue in Avondale.
The BB gun and about $120 of the victim's money was recovered. The rest of the cash already was spent on alcohol, potato chips and other junk food, Johnson said.
