High-speed train from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in the works after Brightline reaches agreement with unions on $10 billion project

  • Brightline hopes to break ground this year, and finish the system by the end of 2027.
Brightline's agreement — made with the High Speed Rail Labor Coalition, a collective of 13 rail unions that represent over 160,000 railroad workers across freight and passenger rail — greenlit the development of a 218-mile rail line between the two cities, according to the company's announcement.

"Our nation's first high-speed rail system will be operated and maintained by union labor, a statement of the strength of the American workforce," Mike Reininger, CEO of Brightline Holdings, said in a statement.

the usa needs a lot more of these now. it's the way forward and will make travelling long distances so much easier.

This will be a great thing, providing the politicians and the lobbyists who fund them can stay out of it and let it happen without their 'help'

So you're cool with people's houses being destroyed and people being evicted because of eminent domain.

It's not that easy, though I like the idea

That's the shitty side of it, but often times those properties are bought, they just don't kick them out. Sounds lame but progress has a price.

As a home owner, there is no difference. Unless you have any societal obligation that allows it.

The right doesn't.

The right?

Oh, yes of course. Can't have a conversation without blaming someone.

My serious and non sarcastic hope is that some day people wake up and realize how they have been conditioned to always blame one side and not the other and claim that no matter what one side does, its wrong while their side is always right, while reality is they both love this. A divided nation is a government's dream.

But that day isn't coming soon, maybe when we're a war torn third world country.

The right is the one who blocks progress. Every time.

But rails need land.....you need to give up land.

The right can't even be bothered to get vaccinated or wear a fucking mask.

Land isn't a thing close to that.

And societal obligations are something the right doesn't understand...as they've demonstrated

As for what your desires are....I truly don't give a fuck..

But?? We will all have electric powered vertical lift cars soon !! We don’t need no old high speed trains!
Haven’t you seen “Back to the Future”? The trains will fly!

A high speed rail connecting LA to Vegas sounds nice but I would not bet on this project coming to fruition.

It seems pointless to me to build any rail line unless it is totally automated. Capital costs make rail building prohibitively expensive. The recurrent costs of militant labour make running them impossible. Sad to say so, but that has been the fate of most High Speed Rail systems.

This is absolutely not necessary.

Spend the money to improve freight rail and commuter rail in urban areas, not tourist rail for the hoity toity.

Depending on the route, there could be a rise and fall of a couple of thousand feet or more. Not suitable for high speed anything.

$10,000,000,000 / 218 = 45,871,559.63

45 MILLION dollars per MILE?????

I don't think so Tim.

is it for 'tourist rail'? wouldn't it be used for commuting and/or freight?

Because the rail unions handle freight trains does not mean this zippy thing will.

Who commutes between LA and Vegas? Tourist, gamblers and celebrities. Will the Average Joe even be able to afford tickets?

Why is that a bad thing?

I was wondering the same but just saw a story in Cal Matters saying it will run through the median along Interstate 15. That part could be high speed but that’s only part of the journey. The connections along existing lines from LA, OC, SD to Rancho Cucamonga probably won’t be. Hard to see how this project can pencil out, especially given that tourism is primarily a Friday through Sunday thing.

there are some high(ish) speed trains in the UK -- they even have some stops along the way
