In 1912 there were telegraph and telephone connections to most countries in the world even if you had to wait hours for a scratchy connection. They could even send still pictures if the line would stay connected long enough.

You could also, in London, subscribe to live symphony concerts or opera played through your telephone.

The Onion had a great little guest editorial by the late Pres. George Washington in which he talked about how different the world of today is from what he'd imagined. He thought we'd all have flying slaves by now.
 
My wife grumbles occasionally about how her Scholastic Magazine let her down by telling her she could put her car on a rail and zip out to California gasless by now.
