(swore I wrote this on Saturday morning, but when I went looking to give it a bump, it was not there)
1911
Marguerite, is the plain looking daughter of a wealthy land owner. Her older brother had done the honorable thing and married his pregnant peasant sweet heart, which had pissed her father off to no end. He was disinherited and was now toiling in obscurity with his wife and two daughters.
Two daughters, who were also a thorn in her father's side. He wanted a grandson, and she is now the unfortunate focus of his attentions. Luckily he wasn't so twisted as to consider fathering the child as well. His current bed mate wasn't so uninvolved and was pushing her two sons onto him for consideration.
Marguerite wasn't stupid, and wasn't meek, so she wasn't about to cow to some jackass with good breeding just because her father said so. Also she had a considerable inheritance from her mother, and so he couldn't coerce her with money. She manages the household smoothly, and the employees prefer her to her father, such that she knew before he did that he had decided to hire a match maker.
He wanted more than a man of good breeding, he wanted someone he could trust with his household and his precious daughter. Marguerite wasn't sure how she felt about the whole thing, and after a brief talk with her brother who was happy and poor, and couldn't afford another child. Plus his wife had a weak heart which had only been made worse during pregnancy and it would be hazardous to her health to have another child. So there was no chance of a grandson there.
In the end Marguerite understood she would be the heir, which meant having children. She had never been interested in men before, they tended to be afraid of her father, look upon her and see her title, or worst think her some silly simpering maid who couldn't possible understand the effect of the weather on crop yields.
At 25 she was considered too old for young men, and too young for widowers. Therefore the match maker. She didn't want to consider what her father would have as qualifications and did not look forward to meeting the match maker.
