The UK and Europe have similar problems that we don't blame on the US government and Putin.

Last weekend and this many flights in and out of the UK were cancelled at short notice. They have also reduced the number of flights available during the school summer holidays.

Why?

Staff shortages across Europe. The airports and airlines sacked thousands of staff because of the reduced flights during Covid. Now they want them back but most of the former staff, particularly the low-paid ones such as baggage handlers, have found better-paid jobs elsewhere and are reluctant to return to employers that treated them badly.

PS: Replacement staff need to pass security checks to work airside. There is currently a six-week delay in approvals.
 
That 15 day lockdown to "bend the curve" really proved to be a vehicle of economic ruin
when drunk with power, politicians decided they could beat Covid with permanent lockdowns.

Some politicians might be very bright people, but when collected in a group to problem solve,
they become dumber and more complicit in outright lies and obfuscation than Adam Schiff...

The UK government pumped billions of pounds into airports and airlines to help them keep staff. The employers sacked thousands anyway and kept the money...

UK baggage handlers had poor wages, long hours and poor conditions. They were sacked at short notice. No wonder they don't want to come back, particularly as many have found better-paid work with better hours and employers who value them.

In the UK, even working for MacDonald would pay better and treat employees better than the baggage handlers were. Most supermarkets would also be far better.

We were also short of truck drivers. If a baggage handler could get a truck driving license they could triple their pay.

In the higher-paid jobs, many took the opportunity of a lockdown to retire early.
 
I hate to tell you this, but McDonald's is a dead end, they're paying too much for help
and that is pushing them towards automation. I guess hamburger machine tech
will be one of those new higher paying jobs along with
the transexual hired to code the machine...

Yah, I think the pandemic just exposed a weakness that was there all along. Wages stopped keeping pace with inflation and workers had their heads down and blinders on.

It kinda talks to the poor culture we've developed in which workers fail to take time off that is badly needed, for multiple reasons. And their job has been undervalued as well.

While that may be true, and is happening in supermarkets as well, an unemployed baggage handler would take any job even if for a short term.

As long as they have a job, and are earning, they have the opportunity to look for better work.
 
Baggage handlers make about the same as cops and teachers.

It might be argued that they don't have it that bad.

Flight attendants make great pay,
but there's a shortage there too.

I guess it must be all those horrible work conditions and abuse.

So other than fast food and grocery stores, just where are the better jobs for baggage handlers?
I know! Maybe they're still on the government dole with all that government college money!
I'll bet they're all off learning how to code...

Not in most of the UK. They are usually on the minimum wage.
 
The airlines should, and would be fully justified, in just canceling 30% of ALL flights and parking the jets somewhere. I wonder how ole Buttplug would handle that?

I don't think that a lot of the Left is terribly upset about this.
Less commercial flights means lower CO2.
The rich will still fly and I'll bet
the friends of the Democrats
will find a way to get Mayor
Pete into private flights
reflecting his stature.

Or, maybe he'll act like the millionaire Nancy Pelosi and use government jets.
But, I don't think Mayor Pete will ever be inconvenienced again

The "wave" is coming with or without restrictions. I told everyone over two years ago that the Wuhan Flu is NEVER going to go away. Just like the common cold a new variant is going to come around for a visit year after year. Might as well learn to live with it.

Yes, learn to live with it rather than dying from it.

I take my cars to a shop with about 10 mechanics.

During the mandatory mask times, they had one or two cases.

Once restrictions were lifted, they all stopped wearing masks.

Now they have 2-3 mechanics out every week and wait times for service have gone through the roof.

I wear a mask when i go there, because I dont want to catch it.

My conclusion is they are stupid.

Don't forget Spain, they were the leader in the movement, the canary in the coal mine as it were. Their economy has never recovered from that initiative.
