'1' ratings

I don't know that I'd change the rating system, but I'd be pleased if public comments were mandatory as well as only possible by registered users. For most authors I know, myself included, I'd like to have the opportunity to contact the sender with thanks for their input, good or bad. They would, of course, have the power to ignore my communications or reply in kind, but it would give me the opportunity to find out what's what with a vote that confuses me. I don't really think it's too much to ask either as we write and publish here for free.

The thing about this particular voting system that irks me is that any old anonymous voter can poo on an author's efforts without one iota of accountability. In my opinion, if they feel strongly enough about a certain vote/rating then they can stand up and own it ... just the same way that when our score plummets an entire rating, we have to own it and never get the opportunity to explain ourselves or redeem the work in question.

I leave the comments and voting up because there's no protection in the publishing world from the slings and arrows, and I can get used to them just as well here as anywhere else. This place is just a training ground to toughen my skin.
