Chyoo hit one hundred thousand threads at the weekend. This prompted me into some thoughts:

There have been over 60,000 accounts created. How many of these are still active? How many of these people write?

My Story, School for Scandal, hit just over 3,000 views last month. This is calculated by the amount of times the 'begin' button is pressed on the title page (correct me if I'm wrong). I never personally press this button, just to see how many other people do, but presumably other people bypass the title page as well (there are plenty of ways to access a story without as much as seeing the title page). So how reflective of a story's popularity is this system? What might the 'real' figure be?

Most of those accounts are no active. I'd say about less than 100 people write on any thing close to a regular basis.

The views of a story are calculated by totaling all the views of the pages of the story.

I don't think so. I just checked and merely opening a new page did nothing for the number of views, neither per month or in total.
Clicking "Begin..." is the only way in which to make the views go up, unless registered users don't count towards views.

Hmmm, I see what you mean. That's pretty dumb. My favorite stories don't get that button clicked.

Yet another reason why this site needs a serious update. Oh, well. If wishes were fishes, beggars would ride.

Well the good news is that more people read the stories than what shows up in the view-count, though we can't find out how many.

My pet peeve remains the asinine greeting from the 14th of May 2006 on the front page. I'd dearly like to have that replaced with something useful, like for instance a list of Chyoo's three rules.

I actually don't mind the appearance of the site. It's functional. I even like some of the little idiosyncracies, like how the main page is often a little bit behind the 'fresh stories' page so that sometimes when you click on it you get a little surprise. After all, the only really important thing is the content. But if I could change anything I woud bring the 'views' in line with reality.

While the minimalist, functional style of the site is definitely a plus, I just guess that a few changes could help to make it more appealing and help newcomers get a better understanding of what it's about.

Also, due to you not having PMs switched on, what I was trying to imply earlier in our conversation via notes and feedback was that trying new things to write about has made me a better and more inspired writer. The fact that I've written additions to stories like "Courtney and Jeremy" and "Comforting the Roommate" that are of an entirely different nature has actually improved my additions to SFS and AoA.
It might not be the ideal solution for everyone, but it worked for me.
