I won't post any of the famous Monets or Seurats that I love, because everyone's seen them. And Van Gogh's Starry Night will always be a favorite. Love Manet, as well. But maybe 30 years ago, there was a traveling exhibition of impressionism that came to Kansas City. I believe it only had one Degas, and I don't believe it was one of his most famous ones. But I literally stood in front of it and cried.

And here's a Van Gogh that I had never seen until I ran across a cheap, but framed print of it at Big Lots when I got my new apartment after my divorce. Didn't have to think twice, and put it in my kitchen, and loved it every time I walked in there. The yellows are what made it special to me.

Incidentally, this sculpture replaced a very similar sculpture in a Belgian church by Guillaume's younger brother. The original, "L'Ange du Mal" by Joseph Geefs was considered "too sublime" and there was concern that the young ladies of the congregation woud be too consumed by lust at the presence of the statue to pay attention to the sermons. If you ask me, there's not a whole world of difference between the two statues. Both make Lucifer look fine as hell.

Starry Night has been my absolute favorite painting since I was in kindergarten. At that same time, I did a colored pencil sketch of it that my mom thought was brilliant, and still laments its eventual loss in a previous move. It was even on my credit card for years too. Irises is on my cutting board.

When I had photo frame coasters, I printed out the Van Gogh one with the same blue and yellow color palette of a bridge, one of the Degas ballerinas, a Monet and a Renoir. Think I might be into impressionists? Also like Manet, Munch, Cezanne, Morisot, Cassat and Matisse.

If architecture and furniture can be considered art the way sculpture can, I love love love “googie” architecture and mid-century modern design, especially Eero Saarinen, who designed things as small as tulip table and chairs, to as large as the St Louis Arch. Of the tulip dining set, he said: "The undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs. I wanted to make the chair all one thing again."


This one is kinda silly, but I also unironically love The Bean in Chicago and I cannot explain why. If I ever get to see it in person though, you can bet I will definitely flick The Bean!

I love Googie architecture as well! I wouldn't have thought about furniture but I think you're absolutely right. Also I have a thing for cool lamps or lighting which now I'm now rethinking as art, maybe? Thank you so much for sharing!

You're certainly more well-versed in art in general that I am, and I had completely forgotten about Cezanne, whom I also love. Was never crazy about Renoir's darker colors, although I can certainly appreciate his genius. And I'm glad that you share my love for Starry Night, but obviously we're not unique in that appreciation. But what I really got from your response was the image of you flicking your bean while leaning against The Bean...
