I love seeing what resonates with people

If architecture and furniture can be considered art

It absolutely does count as art! I spent some quality time in the furniture section of the Musee d’Orsay in November and they even list furniture as part of their art collection on their website

I refrained from including furniture in my selections because PLP would still be looking at pictures otherwise

The lines on a lot of MCM and Art Deco furniture are really gorgeous. A couple of my favorite things in my house are beautiful pieces that are as lovely to look at as they are comfortable to use.

Starry Night has been my absolute favorite painting since I was in kindergarten. At that same time, I did a colored pencil sketch of it that my mom thought was brilliant, and still laments its eventual loss in a previous move. It was even on my credit card for years too. Irises is on my cutting board.

When I had photo frame coasters, I printed out the Van Gogh one with the same blue and yellow color palette of a bridge, one of the Degas ballerinas, a Monet and a Renoir. Think I might be into impressionists? Also like Manet, Munch, Cezanne, Morisot, Cassat and Matisse.

If architecture and furniture can be considered art the way sculpture can, I love love love “googie” architecture and mid-century modern design, especially Eero Saarinen, who designed things as small as tulip table and chairs, to as large as the St Louis Arch. Of the tulip dining set, he said: "The undercarriage of chairs and tables in a typical interior makes an ugly, confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs. I wanted to make the chair all one thing again."

This one is kinda silly, but I also unironically love The Bean in Chicago and I cannot explain why. If I ever get to see it in person though, you can bet I will definitely flick The Bean!

As far as something a bit less mainstream than Starry Night and less aesthetic than Saarinen, I also love this darker 1 by Munch. Maybe it’s because that’s how I feel my hair looks in the morning

I took it more than once because there were a few questions that I had a really hard time deciding on. I got the Mona Lisa twice and Scream once.

Fun facts:

• I dislike the painting, Scream, and am not a big fan of surrealism in general
• I just saw the Mona Lisa for the first time a couple of months ago

All of @LadyLascivious1's contributions are fantastic. But the one of Dante and Virgil is right up my alley.

I wish I lived in a dark castle in the mountains where I could collect paintings like this and not have them feel out of place.

I love Googie architecture as well! I wouldn't have thought about furniture but I think you're absolutely right. Also I have a thing for cool lamps or lighting which now I'm now rethinking as art, maybe? Thank you so much for sharing!

Yay! And yes, lamps are absolutely art! There are so many cool pendants lamps and chandeliers from that era as well!

While I love the aforementioned Saarinen mission to free the tables from the mess of legs, I have to admit my favorite combination is the Saarinen “tulip” table (in white marble) with some glossy red Verner Panton “S” chairs. My earlier post was getting long enough though. Have been coveting a combo like this for years and years

You're certainly more well-versed in art in general that I am, and I had completely forgotten about Cezanne, whom I also love. Was never crazy about Renoir's darker colors, although I can certainly appreciate his genius. And I'm glad that you share my love for Starry Night, but obviously we're not unique in that appreciation. But what I really got from your response was the image of you flicking your bean while leaning against The Bean...

Confession: it was the same Renoir painting that Lorelei Gilmore helped recreate in Gilmore Girls’ take on a Pageant of the Masters type event. Love that show too!

Yes! Love mid-century modern decor so much. Would also include the industrial decor in the Chicago tour because it’s such a big part of their story and I’m a big history nerd too, but it’s not my favorite.

That's actually a beautiful one. Much more colorful than his works that I remember. I think it's fascinating to see a painter's works evolve over time. Sometimes it's much more dramatic with it, like with Monet in his later years, when his eyesight was failing and he created his most famous works. Like Beethoven writing his 9th Symphony while basically going completely deaf.

Exactly! I'm not embarrassed to have such cliché favorites. And before I lost my falsetto a couple years ago (bizarre situation), I actually did a pretty mean Bohemian Rhapsody at karaoke. Paid for my drinks several times with that song.

And I need to revisit Mr. Renoir. You've posted some truly beautiful works that I haven't seen before. I remember him as being much darker. Not in subject matter, just in color palette.

Here’s another 1 I love, by Berthe Morisot, a woman who mostly painted women. It reminds me a bit of the Degas dancers waiting in the wings, but goes deeper. It’s almost voyeuristic in how it shows a quiet moment of a woman getting ready for the day. It’s pretty, yet somehow a little sad and vulnerable as well…like every woman who is told how pretty they are, but doesn’t quite believe it in those moments she’s alone with her own reflection. Nevertheless, she is resigned to the routine of keeping up appearances and working with what she has anyway.
