I heard the original well before Manfred Mann covered it, and they messed it up by cutting some lyrics and starting the "douche" controversy. The lyric is "cut loose, like a Deuce/ another runner in the night." The Deuce is the 1932 Ford Model 18 coupe V-8, which was a street racer's dream, also immortalized by the Beach Boys in "Little Deuce Coup."

This was early Springsteen, where he was writing songs full of complex images and verbose wordplay. It got less interesting to me as his songwriting simplified. This song always reminds me of a very short, very specific time, usually in late high school or just after, where everything was summer heated -- sex, love, and cars.
