Now you're stopping any high profile or semi high profile Muslim from entering the country (unless of course it's a member of the Saudi Royal family...

"Cat Stevens denied U.S. entry

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The former pop singer Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, was denied entry to the United States and his flight from London was diverted to Maine, after his name turned up on a watch list, a U.S. transportation security official says.

United Flight 919 en route to Washington was diverted to Bangor where Islam was questioned and detained by federal authorities who planned to put him on a return flight early Wednesday, the official said on Wednesday.

U.S. Customs and border protection authorities discovered that the name matched a federal watch list by checking passenger information transmitted by the airline after the flight departed from London, the official said.

The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the event reported that Islam, whose name is listed as "Usef Islam", is on several government watch lists, including the no-fly list.

United Airlines spokesman Jeff Green said the carrier was asked by the Transportation Security Administration to divert the plane to Maine for security reasons.

Cat Stevens had a string of pop hits in the early 1970s including "Moonshadow" and "Wild World" before converting to Islam in late 1977.

It's not as if his background, present whereabouts, known associates and current political feeling isn't well known...

Nobody under the age of 40 knows who Cat Stevens is let alone who the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens is...

You get a grip!

One can only hope.........

Peeps is proof that socialized medicine doesn't cover the mentally ill in the UK.

Sorry, old chap.

Back when The Dixie Chicks spoke out against GWB and his policies, the Clear Channel network banned them and promoted CD smashing parties.

As an effort to one-up the radio network The Bush admin thought it best to just ban Cat Stevens from entering the country.

:D

Maybe his name translated to something resembling Ted Kennedy

Maybe they should put all American Muslims in camps...
Just to be on the safe side.

*sarcasm*

It gets weirder and scarier by the day.

I suppose I can understand Cat (Yusuf Islam) Stevens being turned back taking into account that America is now a country under a self-imposed seige but when I read that Ted Kennedy had been affected by some sort of security check (I don't know the full story) I just thought that was hilarious...

what I cant understand is that they let the guy board and then diverted midflight !!

what was that all about

If he was a security risk in the first case - he was a damm sight more of a security risk 30 000 feet above the air

Maybe they didnt like his music or something

It wsnt as if he was hiding anything - he did check in under his own name

why they diverted is a strange one - by all means refuse entry at New Youk or where ever , if that was what the call was

It could have been done this way to draw attention to the situation and make a statement.

My question is, what does DHS or whoever made the decision, have against Bangor Maine?

"......eh, he might be a risk. Better send him to Bangor."

The refusal to allow singer Yusuf Islam into the US on national security grounds was a “slap in the face of sanity”, a Muslim group said today.

The star, formerly known as Cat Stevens, was stopped from flying into Washington yesterday after his name appeared on a security watchlist.

His plane was diverted 600 miles to another airport where Islam was questioned. He was being detained there today ahead of being sent back to Britain.

Islam has become a prominent member of the UK Muslim community since abandoning his pop career and changing his name in the 1970s to devote himself to charity work and peace campaigning.

He is head of the Islamia Schools trust and has met Prime Minister Tony Blair as well as the Prince of Wales and Home Secretary David Blunkett in his new role.

The schools are affiliated to the Muslim Council of Britain, whose deputy general secretary Mohammad Abdul Bari expressed anger today at what had happened.

Dr Bari said: “He is a very moderate man. We have absolutely no idea why this has happened. He is very well respected in the Muslim community.

“We are really appalled at what is happening. It is a slap in the face of sanity. If prominent, well-known personalities are treated like this, then how can there be bridge building?”

Islam and his daughter were escorted off the diverted United Airlines flight 919 at Bangor International Airport in Maine yesterday.

I am under 40, and I know who he is.
Don't assume anything about us younger people.
We know more than you think.

I believe you and I'll stay out of your garden.

Gosh, I slept better knowing the dangerous artist formerly known as Cat Stevens was kept out of the country. I didn't realize that "Moon Shadow" was a secret muslim call for Jihad.

The sad part is that while we are able to protect our borders from the likes of Cat Stevens, I am sure there are people out there who genuinely want to kill, maim and terrorize who are having no problem crossing the border from Canada or Mexico.

False. I know who Cat Stevens is and I'm not even thirty, let alone forty. And well, I think it's absolutely silly to have stopped him. How much of a threat coudl he possibly be? Him, of all people!

Ya know, this was a serious case of someone overreacting.

I hope he sues.

I always had a bit of respect for Cat - unlike a lot of pop stars who found religion - but still kept hold of all the trappings - he actualy gave away his wealth and uses the royalties strictly for the cause as he sees it

He has been fairly consistent over this over the last 30 years

His music is still good -

YOU HOPE HE SUES??????

PAHLEEEEEEEZE!

one more lawsuit in a country full of b.s. suits!
I don't suppose we will ever know why the worthless creatin was not permitted within our borders and I don't really care. The fact of the matter is simple, he chose his "faith" over his country.
