What do the writers here read?

Reading through many of the threads it is evident that most writers read a lot of other Lit authors, but I can't find the patience to read porn and only read mainstream literature.

Is it just me then that reads very little if any porno stories and instead reads plays and novels . . . or do the best authors here read careful blends of mainstream and erotica?

Maybe reading some more porn stories would help me with my own writing, I might just try that.

I don't read alot here. I do try to read the stories of some of the AH authors and some of the holiday contests' entries, but mostly, if I am really in the mood to read, mystery novels are my vice.

I'm just waiting for Shereads to slip up and confess that she doesn't read the stories at Lit. either.

Personally I haven't read many stories on Lit for ages except contest entries, I'm too busy writing or playing GTAIII

I read whatever I have handy. If I am in a particular mood I have tons of books here, if I am in the mood for something sexy, I read lit. I have a few authors I know I can count on for something enjoyable.

Nine times in ten I will be reading a dry historical text. My love of history is so ingrained that even these are time well spent to me.

There are only a few porn authors I follow. The rest tend to be as exciting as watching paint dry. Nowhere near as exciting as Elmore Leonard, Dan Brown, Chuck Palahnuik, Douglas Coupland, Philip Dick, Walter Kirn, Bradbury, Heinlein, Card, Goines, Stewart O'Nan etc.

Mostly mystery and thrillers, some sci-fi for fiction; non-fiction is usually about flying or sailing.

If I'm in the mood for smut, I usually pick an auther that hangs out here, or from the top list in a category.

Read select authors here, not that I'm a 'snob' or anything. Otherwise busy, and otherwise reading Marguarite Duras, absurdists, euro-mags or anything, anything to do with semiotics or pop cultural theory. I'm a nerd at heart.

I read a couple AH authors at most. I think I'm going to give up reading contest stories, takes too much time.

Notes on reading habits, likes, etc.

No pop or bestseller books.
Love classics, Russian, English (all U.K.) and Latin-American lit.
Russian, English, Venetian and Mexican history.
Russian, English, Venetian and Mexican arts and culture.
Books on classical music, ballet, film and opera.
Lit-crit theory; Feminist theory; Film theory.
History of the English language.
Science for the laywoman.
Theology (leftist, feminist, liberation).
Bios & memoirs of very interesting persons (not necessarily famous).
Lots of poetry.
Just about anything that helps me think about: being human, life itself, love, beauty.

I'll read a bit of fiction here

often to get a feel for a category to see if I have a story that will fit, but mostly I read the poetry.

As for outside reading, I have been on a roll reading Japanese Authors: Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima, Haruki Murakami, Junichero Tanizaki, Banana Yoshimoto and a number of others. I gotten an interesting look at Japanese History reading the novels.

I'll also read all sorts of poetry: Wislawa Szymborska, Olena Davis, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Donald Hall, etc. My only wish is that I had more time to read.

I read a few stories here and there on Literotica.com....the story has to catch my eye, or the summary. Sometimes I pay attention to the rating, but most of the time I don't.

When I do read--which isn't as much as it used to be (reading 1000 pages of text a week on top of going to classes and tests kinda sucks the fun out of reading), I tend to read science fiction. I like Heinlein, and I'm a huge fan of Card. I cut my teeth on Asimov and Bradbury, a little Jim Varley here and there, and since I'm a D&D dork, I read Hickman and Weise, as well as an Salvator I can get my hands on. I'm reading through a large gifted selection of Steven King books right now, as well as some HP Lovecraft collections. My library includes everything from a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula (a fradulent original printing...fake, but still damn cool) to Thomas Friedmann's The Lexus and the Olive Tree.

I watch a lot of movies. I seem to be God's ultimate joke. I have a 150 IQ but about a 3 second attention span. I'll admit flashy special effects and loud noises draw my attention fairly well....but I still like a good story or plots that force you to think.

Out here, I tend to read exhibitionism stories, because, well, I am one.

I'm not much for poetry. I do appreciate it when I read it, but I don't generally go out of my way to find it. I can't write it very well unless I'm really really pissed off, which I try very hard to not be lest I lose my temper and hospitalize someone.

I spend most of my days now here in our computer room surrounded by shelves filled with books from poetry to prose, and back again. Some that I've written, but much more that many others have. And I've read them all, and some of my favorites more than twice. I occasionally read stories posted here at lit, but like everyone else I have certain authors that I favor, and others whose work that I just laugh at, ignore, or help out with when not working on my own stuff. Authors are secular people, in that I mean when it comes to the written word they suffer others follies lightly, while at the same time try harder to draw attention to their own work. It's not snobbery that makes them this way, just a real candor about what really is their main interest in life, and when it comes to writing that's when our attention is mostly focused on ourselves, and our possibl careers as legitimate authors.

As new to Lit as I am....

I thought I'd jot a reply down. As great a love for reading as I have, I rarely buy books. I've someone that instead buys them for me. He does this simply because I'll look something over that catches my eye, and I'll put it down.

It's anything and everything I'll read, Poetry both modern and from the late 1900's, from two books left to me by my mother. As for actual stories, anything and everything, erotica, sci-fi, romance (rarely), horror and more. If the back seems to catch my attention I'll read it.

As for Lit? Well, a little of everything and yes, you guessed it anything. Erotic this and that, to horror, scf-fi, I'm a board minded kinda gal, it seems. What I read, you'll find I comment on.

And sadly yes you'll find this scattered under the heading of a new post, my attention was snagged by something and it's a case of a simple misclick.

broad minded........ kinda gal. *rolls her eyes* It's typing error's like that, that can land one into a heap of trouble. And the rest of that sentense can remain a thought. :D

I'd have to say all writer's are. In some form or another. Nuts that is..

If it's any consolation, I have a friend who went to school for psychology and now works for a prison. He flat out told me one day that if I ever have to take a psych exam that I had better lie my ass off....otherwise they may not let me out of the building.

I like being crazy....it keeps the annoying people away and it draws in the really interesting ones....that and on long car trips can usually amuse myself fairly well.

*chuckles* Sounds like Moi. Could be why I dispise people that are 'doctor' anything.

Hey, I'm gonna be Dr. "The Darkness" some day and I'll be writing my History books on the Roman Empire and the age of Alexander....

I read a lot of Literotica stories, whatever catches my attention. The process is pretty random. When I find an author I like, I eventually read all her/his stories.

I used to read all sorts of books, with a special fondness for science fiction. Over the last several years, I've spent more time on music, listening, playing and composing.

Since I try to create realistic characters in my porn stories, I read a lot of erotic fiction by women. I think that helps me create believable female characters.

I don't read much porn myself. I prefer mystery and the occassional horror. Love John Sandford, Ed McBain with some Stephen King to shake things up a bit. To me erotic stories are boring to read. They can be fun to write but I think that's only because I control what goes into them.

I tend to read quite a few stories at Lit. Most of them are selected at random in the new area. The more realistic the story title and description the more likely I will open it up.

The votes mean nothing most of the time, as some of the best stories may not have good grammar so they get voted low. I would rather make my own decision if it was good or sucked.

I also read many other books including scripture, to romance, to poetry. In particular I love poetry with deep meanings to the words. That would be my first choice most of the time.

Wank stories at Lit are really only good if they seem real. Most any one can write fake trashy sex and that gets boring real quick!

I don't read much here that I'm not asked to read. With all due respect to the writers here, many of whom are my friends, looking for a good piece of fiction here is something like looking for romantic love in a whorehouse.
