Hi All,
In the words of Billy Pilgrim: How goes it?
I've been doing this "thing" for the past couple of days that I think others here might enjoy. I've been volunteer proofing for Project Gutenberg.
What, you might ask, is Project Gutenberg? And a very good question that would be, too.
I first came across PG while looking for a copy of Roget's Thesaurus online. I have others but I don't like them neaarly as much as Roget's.
Well, lo and behold, PG had a free copy online. As a matter of fact, PG is responsible for, now, 10,000 free eTexts - from light fiction to references - that can be found in a variety of places throught the internet. They are trying to preserve our books. Please understand that because of copywrite laws they are limited as to what they can scan, proof, and distribute. Mostly it's old out of print or rare books and references...and in a variety of languages...but you never know when you'll need them. Anyway, if anyone is interested, here's the url for PG
Project Gutenberg
and here's the url for Distributed Proofreader's
Distributed Proofreaders, Preserving History One Page at a Time
To paraphrase one of the members there: it feels like we're part of a secret group, trying to memorize text to preserve it, like in Farenheit 451.
They need volunteers in all different things - not just proofreading. Why not check it out? You really might find it interesting and worth your while.
edited so people wouldn't get hung up on trivialities and actually look at the sites...don't care if you post...don't care what you say...just check out the sites
Later..
SK

roofreading is EXTREMELY ADDICTIVE. Proceed to site at your own risk...and don't say that I didn't warn you.
