Do not scapegoat the fan.

I will admit I did not see last night's game (heresy. I am a huge Cub fan, but I had another commitment) I think the scapegoating that is going on is sad. From what I understand in reading the board, this guy caught a foul ball. Apparently it MIGHT have helped the Cubs win the game. From what I understand, the Marlins got 8 runs in the 8th inning.

They won. Fair and square. Get over it.

I think its inappropriate that the media has apparently broadcast this guy's name, likeness, and practically given directions to the guy's house. All over a fucking ball game? How assinine. I expect this kind of shit out of Braves and Cardinals fans, but not Cub fans. I think making a scapegoat out of someone who only reacted the way any fan would...shit I would have caught that ball too...in my Ryne Sandberg glove.

The fact is the Cubs, acted like the typical Cubs last night and blew it.

They BLEW it, folks. They were not in the game.

So we go to another game which is good for the franchise at least and the fans get another night of baseball in the Friendly confines

Lets try to remember that shall we...the Friendly Confines???

Now if the Cubs blow the chance at the World Series, I'll be pissed for a day or so...but you know, this is the Cubs we are talking about here

and there is always next year.

Cub fans have not been to a World Series since 1945

Cub fans have not seen their team win a World Series since 1908

I understand their enthusiasm and their disappointment. This is not a franchise that is a winning machine like the Atlanta Braves.

Cub fans are used to disappointment. So, I think its a natural thing to be angry, especially when the team is *this close* to actually achieving a division title and a shot at the World Series.

No one likes a rug pulled out from under them, even if they are not used to the rug even being there. So, the novelty of it has all the passions stirred to a frenzy. But, I think perspective is important. The thing that makes us Cub fans is that we play a little different baseball in Chicago. We are very much a team that set forth ideals and goals that are very much old school baseball. Where all the right phrases are said (read cliches) and the emphasis is on baseball as a mystical analogy to life itself.

No other baseball team in the league can compare to the mystery and the magic that is the Chicago Cubs. No other baseball team has a field like Wrigley. (Ivy covered walls in the outfield??? )
No other ball club has fans that keep the faith like Cub fans. This is why I like the Chicago Cubs. They speak to the soul and to the heart of what things were like in a Golden Era. They are a living anachronism in a world of Nike endorsements, Corporate Ownership, and Baseball strikes. They are all about the magic and the superstition of base ball.

So I understand that its hard not to lay blame. Its hard not to claim there is a curse. Its hard not to say, we were robbed. All of these things are part of the mythos that is the Chicago Cubs. But we live in an age where our technology and our superstition meet.
In a bygone era that guy would have been razzed for a day or so. Now we have the technology to really make him miserable. I think its unfair and somebody ought to come to their senses really quick and say...you know we betray ourselves with this kind of behaviour. This is not what this game is about. This is not what we want to teach our children. This is not what being a Cub fan is about.

I fell in love with the game of baseball because I fell in love with the philosophy of the Cubs. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball or five. You do the best you can. You regroup, and you go on.

I want the people of Chicago to try to remember this.

Now, now, rhys. Let's not let this fan off the hook. After all, we all know that he was responsible for those softballs the Marlin's hitters thumped for those 8 runs.

He also went to bat in the 8th and 9thi innings and didn't score any runs either.

It's entirely all his fault.

Well, he's certainly responsible for the Cubs just sucking as a ball club over the last 80 or so years. Never mind that he's just a young guy its still all his fault.

I personally hold him responsible for trading Greg Maddox to the Braves.

Hell I hold him responsible for every pitch ever thrown by Mitch Williams.

Especially that game that went on for 18 innings waaaaay back there

yeah.

*sigh*

he didn't do something that any fan would have done, his actions were a big factor in the Marlins scoring 8 runs in the inning, he isn't 100% to blame.

Anyone ever watch Dusty Baker and think his mama should have warned him about sucking on toothpicks like that?

Am I the ONLY one disturbed by his toothpick sucking antics?

I'm gonna laugh so hard if this fan comes back and says "That was for not letting Billy Goat Sianis into the stadium in '45". LOL.

Blame the goats, the black cats, and the fans... anything but their own team.
(Scuse me I'm laughing so hard right now my fingers are too weak to type anymore...)

I wonder if that is the same fan who jinxed the AZ Diamondbacks. I mean, after they won their World Series it was only downhill from there and they have certainly had their share of excuses.

I wonder if he's a football fan also? You know the AZ Cardinals just aren't...................

I do like your thinking Rhys:cool:

Apparently its bad enough that he's issued a public apology. Fox just ran part of his statement

I think a little compassion is in order here. I really do.

I blame Rhys.

Yes, you, you fuckwit.

You obviously weren't wearing the "special apron" outfit.

Don't let it happen again. I'll have to get all "Dom" on your sorry ass.

If the Cubs go to the World Series, they should give that fan tickets to all home games, hell, even send him to Boston or New York too. Just to make up for the abuse, it would be great PR.
