I've been approached by a site that wants to use some of my stories. It's ladyjuliana.com (qv).http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=ush1-mail&p=ladyjuliana

I went there, and it seems to be a whorehouse, down under. A site where women and men can be rented as "escorts" in Australia.

They say they are going to have an erotic story section and want to use some of my stuff. No remuneration was offered, of course.

I'd really appreciate it if a few people would visit that site, take a look at what it is, and help me decide whether to let them use any of my stuff.

Thanks, MG

Well I clicked a couple of the links and all I got were links where money would need to change hands to get anywhere.

Demand a contract. Retain all editorial rights and charge at least 50 cents a word.

Someone is trying to make money from your work. You should too.

Dear Gauchie,
Yes, and from the prices quoted ($500/hr), it must be quite lucrative. I guess whoring is a money making proposition, but I really don't want to contribute to it. Especially for free. Your advice is appreciated.
MG
Ps. I guess they want something for interested parties to read and get in the mood before they make a call.

If you're really serious, hire a professional lawyer for advice before you "sign" or "agree" to anything.

If you can't afford a lawyer, it's just prudent to avoid entering into any kind of contract this (international, for sure).

Good advice above, Maths. I checked out the site and can't see how erotica is going to be anything special on it. It does seem sex work and advertising for it is legal there. Once I had to decline a friend's invitation to "vacation" at an Aussie mining town where the ratio of men to women was something like 85-15. I only declined due to work commitments though.

Did they inquire about a particular piece? I would think your pussy shaving essay might prove useful to this organization.

The site dies not seem to be doing any of the actual _selling_, it is more like a yellow pages for Oz prostitites and (why can't they just cut the 'international escort' and 'coutresan' crap and call it what it is?) agencies.

So, it's a website financed by ads. A commersial business preying on the prostitution industry. So it's up to you if you want to support that activity as a whole or not, and what that would be worth for you.

Dear Perdita,
No, not that one. The one they were most interested in was "Morning Love." I really don't remember much about it, except that it generated lots of fan mail from readers who mistreat their clergymen. They asked about a couple of others, too.

I think that site wants a smut section to get customers in the mood. Then they dial up a whore for a little expensive fun.
MG
Ps. That's quite an impressive collection of "Day of the Dead" dolls you have.

Dear Maths,

I am more suspicious than not. I would think customers of the site would not require prose to get them in the mood.

Be careful,

Perdita

Dear PrM,
My Auntie, next door, is a left-handed, redheaded lawyer. She suggested I tell that site to "go piss up a rope."

I don't think I'll use those words, but I'm not going to allow the use of my stuff at a pay site. They just want something for nothing. Now I'll have to keep an eye on that site to make sure they don't use my stuff anyway. Don't know what I'd do if they use it.
MG
Ps. Thank you all for the input.

Mg,

You have copyright to your material as soon as you finish it. If they use your work without permission a professionally worded statement, to the effect they have ten days to remove it or you will have no choice but to take legal action to protect your intellectual property should suffice to get them to remove it.

More often than not the threat of legal action will get you more than actually taking leagal action. I would save their request and print it out just in case. By requesting that you give them permission to use your work they have implied that they understand it is your work. If you were forced to actually take legal action such proof that they reconized the work as yours would be invaluable.

As an Aussie I would advise to give it the arse
Dear MJ,
If that means to refuse to let them use it, that's what I did. If it means something different, please let me know.
Thanks,
MG
Ps. I wonder why they didn't want to use something of DurtGurl's?

Flicka, you're too up-scale; the customers would be reading Proust or Tolstoy.

Smile now, Perd

Aw, Pops luvvy. Wouldn't it be cheaper, or at least more worthwhile, flying me to you?

Good to see you, darlin',

Perdita

Based on their advertised rates, I figure you probably spent at least 4 hours writing a story (Auntie should confirm a minimum billing period). So that means they would need to pay you at least $2000US per story. If their budget is big enough, after you run out of stories to send, you could have DurtGirl become a porn pimp and take a broker's fee for making the connection.

Actually, I like your Auntie's advice. I'll provide the rope, I'm sure someone here has a really big tomcat, we'll let him piss on it, and we can mail it to them with a note indicating the package contains your answer.

-FF (marketing assistance available - only 1¢/word in advance - no discounts for aussie porn sites - in fact they have to pay double so MathGirl's Auntie can have her retainer)
