Madonna's Children's Book Tops the List

Thu Sep 25, 9:27 PM ET

NEW YORK - Madonna (news - web sites) has another No. 1 hit, this time on the book charts. The singer's children's story, "The English Roses," was published simultaneously around the world Sept. 15 and will top The New York Times' children's list for the Oct. 5 edition.

"It demonstrates once again that Madonna has an extraordinary gift for communicating with children of all ages," Nicholas Callaway, CEO of Callaway Arts & Entertainment, the book's U.S. publisher, said in a statement Thursday.

According to Nielsen BookScan, which tracks sales in the United States, Madonna's book sold 57,369 copies in its first full week, ranking No. 5 overall. The top seller was Dr. Phil McGraw's "The Ultimate Weight Solution," with sales of 215,536.

Well, I am a US citizen. I'd hate to turn on any foreign TV show once the comedians find out about this. It's not going to be funny.

Dr. Phil and Madonna???? Yeah, I'm bursting with pride....

*slinks away, covering her face*

O did not know. Tungingrüven at the Y sounds foreign to me.

Just what is the point of this thread? To get people to laugh at the US by showcasing this Madonna book shit?

Tongue dude, you're US Citizenship totally sucks if you think encouraging others to laugh at YOUR country is somehow cute and funny.

Get the fuck out if you don't like it here. I'd expect this from either Lance, PP or Kate Hudson, not from you.

Ya fucking weirdo.

(LOL) Hillary's latest lie...er.."book"..

20 years of the "new" public education is paying off!

'Atta nation, USA! That's the spirit!

Clobber them with Madonna's books!
Put plastic pink flamingos on all their lawns!
A McDonald's on every corner, with cheap plastic Happy Meal toys for every child!
Drown them in Jerry Springer "Too Hot for TV" videos!
Midget mudwrestling for all!
Let's Disney-fy Rome! We can turn the Coliseum into a neon-lit shopping mall and top it with big mouse ears!
Marble's too heavy- let's replace it all with Formica!
We'll make them watch "Armageddon" until they're reduced to babbling idiots, and then let Dr. Phil sort out the resulting trauma!

We're going about the war on terror in entirely the wrong way.

You know, your posts don't get nearly enough praise as they should. I've had my eye on you and your spoon for some time now. From one Floridian Gemini to another, good night.

I can't see the problem...

that arsehole the Duchess of York (Fergie) wrote a crappy kid's book about a helicopter or something (it could have been a badly drawn windmill). The book shot to the top of the lists in the first week, then sunk into oblivion after that...

Boy were we embarrassed...

LT, I agree with you. I like her music, don't like most of her videos and if I had a child her book no matter how good would be the last one in my house.

But to each their own I guess. :rose:

Good to see you here tonight!

............and yet another reason.

I got an email from some "cruising" source. They tell me that there were 4,500,000 people who went on cruises in the first 6 monyhs of 2003.

Out of that 4.5 Mil, 4 mil were from North America (read The US.).

That's about 88% of one industries world wide income being produced by one group of people.....US citizens.

Damn, maybe we have a reasonable claim to produce 25% of the world's pollution if we provide that much of the world's resources?

Well I know America is the best nation on Earth.. so I can laugh at the pathetic things that go on in my country... I don't hate my country

Us here in the UK, are staying quiet on the subject.
Nobody mention, Fergies, "Budgie The Helicopter" books, ok

This is bullshit, of course.

The pollution often ends up being dumped in the world's lap, but the resources, or productivity, or wealth, tend to accrue to the country that produces it.

If you burn coal in Ohio, then Cincinnati gets the electricity, but Tuvalu gets the global warming.

We burned a helluva a lot more coal in the 1800's and it wasn't filtered out the way it is now.

Bad argument!

Probably impeccable grammar and spelling though...

That is a good description of the irrational nonsense I have come to expect from LT, and have heard from others on this subject (even here).

It is okay in theory for someone to be sexual and uninhibited, and we tend to celebrate that here, but should a famous person who is openly sexual get near our children in any way - even by writing a book, regardless of how good and harmless the book is - oh my God! The hypocrites come out of the woodwork!

Meanwhile we openly display our own sexuality, posting here on a porn board, and all the other stuff that goes on here, while hiding behind our anonymity, while being two faced, even here, about someone who isn't hiding.

I have learned to live with the prejudice against sexuality in society, the prudishness in the US, and all of that in the real world - even though most sexuality is good for people, and a lot better than the other crap we expose our kids to (the violence in movies, sports and the circus that is "professional" wrestling).

But I am dismayed to see it carry over into this forum - I would have thought that the people here knew better because they had experienced this prejudice. But I guess there are always a few bigots (and hypocrites) in every crowd.

I don't know how this got into a discussion of children's books, but from what I understand there are abandoned coal mines in mainland China that pollute the earth's air more than all of the cars in the US combined. China does nothing about it because they don't have to. Third world countries are notoriously the worst polluters in the world - partly because they don't have the economic resources to dedicate to cleaning up and to run clean industries, partly because they just don't give a damn; they can always point to the US.

We use a lot of the world's resources, but we use them a lot more efficiently than anybody else, we are more productive than anybody else (especially the third world countries) and we pollute less than everybody else for the given use of those resources.

If anybody thinks pollution in L.A. or NYC is bad, they ought go to Mexico City where you can cut the air with a knife (not to mention the sewers).

The premise that we burned more coal in the 1800s is undoubtedly wrong. The US generates about 40% of its electric power needs from coal, and its power needs are greater today than ever.

But even granting your invalid premise, your logic completely escapes me. I just can't make a logical syllogism from your rhetorical sow's ear.

It is an error to compare foreign coal with US cars. You need to look at total carbon dioxide emissions.

Not true. The US is far ahead of other countries (except for UAE) in per capita CO2 emissions.
See http://www.alsagerschool.co.uk/subjects/sub_content/geography/Gpop/HTMLENH/stats/co2.htm
as well as many other places on the web.

As for the 'efficiency' argument, the US carbon emission per dollar of GDP is also larger than the developed world average, and is almost as bad as that of China.
See table 1, carbon intensity, at
http://www.worldwatch.org/press/news/1999/07/27/

The problem is the US economy is big, and inefficient at turning carbon to dollars, leading to disproportionately large C02 emissions.

edit: here is a more academically orientated table of CO2 emissions per GDP:
http://www.econ.yale.edu/~nordhaus/homepage/rice98 tables 121898.PDF
Most of Europe is quite efficient but the US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and especially Russia are quite inefficient, as is the third world.

I didn't know the Native Americans burned coal in such vast quantites. Buffalo barbeques?
