Snippettsvile: Story Accepted/Declined Discussion

I intend going through all stories posted and putting them into this thread in groups of four. The decision about which ones go in which Issue depends on the html etc.

Accept or decline?

1. Introducing Molly, by PierceStreet.

2. Sisterly Love, by wildsweetone.

3. Lisa Hitchhikes, by PierceStreet.

4. Hannah and the Jammer, by MathGirl.

Have we decided to have no least word limit?

Unless we have, "Hannah and the Jammer," by MathGirl is 339 words long.

I have not been able to find an updated version of MathGirl’s story at the end of the Snippettsville Story thread, neither has the story at the beginning of the list been blotted out, as have MathGirl’s other revised stories.

Concerning content, I find her story perfectly acceptable, but the story length – even if that is now ‘acceptable’ – should be expanded to include at least one sizeable, or several brief exchanges of dialogue. These could be either humourous, accusatorial, or even indelicate, or any combination thereof.

Although I do not necessarily think that all the stories must include dialogue, the first three do. If bundled with those other three, MathGirl's story’s lack of dialogue, compounded by its brevity, will make it stand out oddly from the rest.

My advice would be to allow her some time to expand her story closer to the regulation length, preferably with the use of some bits of dialogue.

I have to declare an interest, my Hannah stories follow on from and build upon the character MG sketched in, so I would have to rewrite if "Hannah and the Jammer" was rejected.

I read Quasi's comments about "Hannah and the Jammer" - if the word count is disregarded - there is another possible solution, if MG does not want to expand her story, might be to bundle it with my Hannah story so that she gets more fleshed out.

Otherwise I vote accept. :p

Early stuff

Some of the early stuff was written before we came down in favour of a hard limit. While I'm more than happy to accept the limit for fresh work, I am inclined to let shorter early pieces through the net. Particularly as we were all finding our way back then.

I agree with Alex. I'm getting wary of all the rules and stickies. I was so excited about writing snips, and my characters, and now I'm basically intimidated. I can't even read a map.

Don't worry, be happy

Mi amiga,

the only rules you need to worry about are the word limits, and don't trash my characters. Otherwise, keep writing, keep it vague and let the Kiwi lady and me worry about the rest!

only here briefly and sneakily ;)

Right, the first four are accepted as is and will only be altered if MathGirl wishes to change her Hannah and the Jammer story. (I haven't time right now to PM her but hope she will read this thread soon.)

I note all your comments on existing stories and they're accepted also.

Quasi mentioned dialogue... I have decided that we will work through each of the stories posted, and only after that's done, will decide which stories shall go with which Issue of Snip. It's easier to take them as they appear on the Story thread, just for this Acceptance/Decline part of the action - in order to get things moving. :)

perdita noted about the rules and things including the maps... I am hoping that now we are up and running things will be smooth flowing. Basically everything is set up and now it's just up to the authors to hit their keyboards or pens and write. *smiling*

The rules are minimal, only four of them and basically they're just common sense. - word count - present day - read all stories posted - advise original author of additional traits to characters.

I think as far as the map thing is concerned perdita, it might help to use only the third map with the key. Locate where you would expect your characters to hang out (mostly) and just stick with that area until things become a little clearer...? Basically the other maps are stating that on the east (right) side is Green Lake, in the middle is Snippettsville and on the west (left) side is the Interstate. (if you'd like me to explain Green Lake map in a more basic format then just shout - it's a pleasure to help :) )

There, let's breathe a sigh of relief that the first hurdle is overwith the rest should be plain sailing - relatively speaking.

(sorry i can't stay and chat right now - personal stuff going on - wso)

I wrote "Hannah and the Jammer" when this was all very casual and 600 words was the upper limit. I really don't want to change the story, and I don't see any place in it where dialog would be appropriate.

My preference is that it be rejected rather than changed or incorporated into another piece.

I have decided to accept Hannah and the Jammer as it is. The style of writing is such that it would be good to include. The decision as to which other stories it is submitted with, will be made at a later time.
