IC:
I booked a room at a small hotel on the corner of Rampart and Wilshire Boulevard near downtown Los Angeles. I need to get my crew together; in order to start a successful criminal organization, one needs people who are loyal and trustworthy -- perhaps even to a fault. That's the hard part. Everything else will fall into place after that.

I went out for a walk after I checked myself into the hotel. I wanted to clear my mind before I went back to my hotel room to make a few telephone calls. I noticed a couple of police officers sitting in their police patrol car, and apparently, they noticed me, too.

"Yo, Charlie Chan," one of the officers yelled out his window, and pointed to me directly. "C'mere, Charlie, I wanna talk to you."

I approached the police patrol car, and said out loud, "I'm sorry, I think you have me mistaken for someone else. My name is not Charlie..."

I was quite shocked at the smell of freshly-baked donuts and cheap, convenience store coffee emanating from their vehicle.

"Yeah, whatever, Charlie," the police officer said. His partner snickered from the driver's seat. "I don't know which part of China Town you're from, but around here, people don't jay-walk, alright?"

"But officer," I replied, appearing puzzled and confused. "I wasn't jay-walking. I was walking on the sidewalk when you called me to come over...."

"Right," the officer agreed. "But then you crossed the street where you weren't supposed to, and that's called jay-walking, isn't it?"

The police officer in the driver's seat started snickering even louder.

"Well, yes, I suppose," I stuttered. "But I wouldn't have done it if you didn't call me to come over in the first place..."

"Oh, so you're saying I MADE you commit a crime?" the first police officer said, glowering through his tinted shooting glasses. "Is that what you're trying to say, Charlie?"

"Uh, jay-walking isn't a crime in this jurisdiction," I replied, somewhat by instinct -- three years of law school and six months preparing for the bar exam will do that to anyone. "Dude, it's not even a misdemeanor."

"I pray to God Almighty that you just didn't disrespect the badge of authority given to me by the people of this good city," the police officer snarled as he angrily stepped out of his vehicle and slammed the door shut for emphasis. The other police officer exited the police car, smiling as he sauntered around the vehicle to join his partner.

"Uhhh, no, Officer, I just said that--"

"Oh, so you're calling me a liar, Charlie? Is that it?" the police officer growled at me as he stuck his face exactly one inch away from mine.

"I think we should cut the guy a break," the other police officer said coolly.

"Oh, thank you officer," I said, seeming relieved.

"I'm not finished talking yet," The officer who just spoke then poked me in the chest with a white oak bokken that he carried at his side in place of a regular police officer's nightstick or baton.

"Tell you what, Charlie... My partner and I will forget your disrespectful behaviour -- as well as the CRIME you just committed -- and we'll let you off with a warning. All you gotta do is pay the fine."

"Uh... a fine?" I ask, still seeming confused. "What fine?"

"It's the fine you need to pay to keep your chinky, ching-chong Charlie-ass from getting beaten, you stupid gook sonofabitch!" the first officer roared.

"Oh, you mean, I need to pay you a bribe?" I cocked my eyebrow at both officers, with an edge of defiance in my tone of voice.

In reply, both officers lunged at me, dragging me into a dark alley immediately behind the Ocean View Hotel. One of them held me, while the other one swung the wooden sword at my head, knees and anywhere else he thought he could strike to hurt me.

Blood trickled from my face and head as I took a few of the shots while maneuvering us deeper into the alley. Once in a more hidden location, I suddenly stepped forward and bent over at the waist, using a simple, jerking aikido move to throw the police officer grabbing me from behind. I took a couple more shots from the other officer's wooden sword before I could grab it and use it to jerk him into range. He managed to break a few fingers on my left hand, by the time I caught his weapon. Outraged that I would actually try to defend myself, the officer reached for his sidearm -- just as I dug the fingers of my right hand into the soft flesh behind his Adam's apple and tore his throat out.

The other officer recovered just in time to see his partner go down quietly drowning in his own blood. He, too, reached for his sidearm while yelling a few choice profanities -- which I believe were mostly directed at me. I batted his pistol away with the wooden sword I now held in one hand, and shoved a fistfull of his partner's bloody throat deep into the officer's gaping mouth.

By the smell, I could tell that the man's gag reflex and revulsion caused him to vomit a substantial amount of sour-smelling bile. This only added to the man's difficulty as he struggled to spit and claw at his partner's bloody, meaty Adam's apple that I literally lodged next to his own.

I stepped on both of the officer's necks and heads to quiet them down more quickly.

--------------------------------

I scavenged as much material from the police officers' corpses as well as their police patrol vehicle, and made it back to my hotel room with a couple of bullet-proof vests, two 9-millimeter pistols, extra extended ammunition clips, a 12-gauge pump action shotgun, and a whole trunk full of ammunition for all the firearms.

As a special souvenir, I also kept the white oak bokken. After all, it's my favorite, signature weapon, and it can definitely come handy for interrogations and intimidation tactics.

The First Partner-In-Crime.

I clean myself up as best I can in the hotel room's bathroom, after arrived from a quick errand to the local drug store (to buy some medical supplies for my injuries).

After I get settled in, I make the first of a few calls to set up a meeting with a potential founding member of my crew.

"Hey, it's me," I say, expecting the person on the other line to recognize my voice, and more importantly, know what this telephoen call is all about without my having to spell things out. After all, one never knows when a land-line might be tapped. "I'm at the place. Are you coming over?"

Translation: "I am now at the predetermined meeting location. Meet me here if you are still interested in starting a criminal business organization with me."

Adam was around the block from the meeting place when his phone rang, he quickly flipped it open and answered it. " Yeah?" he demanded into the receiver.

"Hey, it's me,I'm at the place. Are you coming over?"

" yeah, I'm here......" he said as he pulled up to the curb and tossed the valet his keys. He closed the phone and walked toward his friend who was standing with his arm outstretched. " hey, It's been a while! how are you?" adam asked as he shook his hand, then sat down at the table. "what is it we needed to talk about?" he asked with a raised brow.

Adam the First Man

I couldn't help but smile when I saw Adam. I remember him from the "ride along" that I took with the LAPD when I was a law student. He was the rookie cop that had the dubious pleasure of showing the ignorant student what kind of crime existed at the street level in the City of Angels.

"Orale, vato," I said, tossing my head in greeting and shaking his hand. My greeting was kind of an inside joke between us. "I see that you're no longer chained to a uniform or a black and white. I'm proud of you Adam."

I spoke the truth. I knew his background, where he raised himself while growing up in the ghetto. After a singular stint in juvenile hall, Adam turned his life around and joined the Marines. Afterwards, he finished his police training and achieved the rank of Detective at an age where most police academy graduates were still interviewing for regular police patrol positions.

Then again, he showed a lot of promise back then, and even a first year law student like myself could see that. He helped me study and prepare for my Criminal Law and Procedure classes, and even volunteered to serve as a "witness" at one of my mock trials in law school. In a lot of ways, I owed him a debt of gratitude -- one that I hoped to pay with interest.

"So, how's the PD treating you?" I said casually. "And more importantly, how's the pay, Adam? You living large yet, bro?"

I nodded at his response, and then contiued.

"I'm starting that thing we talked about a long time ago -- remember?" I stated cryptically. "I'm going to need your help, Adam. You know how to... clean -- like when certain things get too messy, you know? Now, I'm still starting out. I have no cash, and no people -- yet. So far, it's just me, and if you join me, that makes two of us -- at least, for now."

I looked him dead in the eyes.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about here, bro. If you don't, then this ain't for you," I pause for a few seconds to let my words sink in. "Right now, it's not too late for you to just turn around and walk away. If you do that, you can live life openly, do well at your job, maybe have a wife and a few kids to go with the white-picket-fenced-house in the suburbs."

I felt a small pang of regret. Adam's a good kid. He did well for himself, and if his parents were alive or cared a whit about him, they would have every ritght to be proud. And now, here I was, asking him to throw it all away, and walk down the very dark path that he successfully avoided all of his young adult life.

Then again, it's his choice. I'm giving him the ability to take the opportunity or leave it, and I'm trusting him to NOT turn me in. Most importantly, I need him to succeed. That last fact strengthened my own resolve to push onwards.

"So," I said. "Are you in?"

Adam sat there, listening to his proposition, It intriqued him...... THe things they talked about in the old days coming back to bust out of the ground where they were once buried.

He smiled and extended his hand, " of course I'm in famillia for life vato......" he said with a grin about the time his cell phone rang.

He picked up his razr and flipped it open, " Detective rodri....." he trailed off and looked up at His " friend" " two of them....mhmm.... MIssing a fucking adam's apple?!?!" he said atonished. He talked a few more minutes and closed the phone, " so, looks like I'll be doing some cleaning up sooner than expected.....what did they do?" he asked with a laugh while standing up and putting on his sunglasses.

"I don't know what you're talking about, carnalito," I said, shrugging my shoulders and tossing him a set of keys. "But, I found these car keys somewhere. I think they might be to the police car in the alley off Westmoreland Avenue..."

I scratched my chin, thoughtfully.

"You know, Adam," I said. "It would be really beneficial to the family if you achieved much success at work. I think you'll find yourself at the scene of crimes well before anyone else, and you'll get a lot of credit for solving such crimes with amazing speed and efficiency..."

I smiled and shook his hand again.

"It's good to see you again, Adam -- it really is," I said sincerely. "Now, you take care of business. I'm gonna go up to my room. My old bones don't heal as quickly as they used to."

I showed him my bandaged left hand.

"And by the way, I think this will be home for me for awhile -- at least, until I get things more organized. I'd appreciate it if you could keep an eye out for anything that might come for me without an invitation, you know?"

Adam smiled and caught the keys, " you know puta, you never change" he said playfully as he slung his arm out and slugged his shoulder in a soft playful manner.

" IM gonna go deal with this....I'll watch your back, as long as you have mine vato" he said with a laugh as he walked toward the waiting car.

" try to stay out of trouble for a bit eh holmes?" he said as he got in and started up the engine, " and say hi to your Madre for me, I miss her!" he said as he pulled off, his tires spitting white smoke.

Calling The Second Contact

I lose almost all composure as I bust out laughing at Adam's remarks.

Shaking my head and still chuckling, I head inside the hotel and go up to my room. Once there, I pick up the room's telephone, hit the 9-key to get an outside line, and then dial another number.

On one hand, I was quite pleased to get Adam into the business. I feel thet he can be trusted to be both the "cleaner" AND the man inside the police department.

On the other hand, Ineed more people. Having Adam to do the job of two people is great, but both of us will still need a bigger crew to support our efforts and execute plans.

The phone rang twice before the person on the other line picked up.

"It's me," I said simply."There's a Thai food restaurant on Wilshire Avenue; nearest cross-street is Westmoreland Avenue. Don't let the B-rating sign fool you. It's good food, the prices are so cheap that even I can afford to buy you dinner, and it won't make you sick. I'll see you there."

William Rickerman closed the mobile phone and placed it into his side pocket, his eyes scanned the crowd around him as people went about their lives hoping for the weekend and the relief from the sameness of it all.

William was different had always been different , someone once said that he ahd a look in his eyes , almost like he was more alive than other people. He saw each day as a chance to move forward in life, so when he had been sacrificed for an error that wasn't his then for the first time in his life he'd hit a roadblock that wouldn't go away.

Even now it stopped him from following the paths he could have choosen leaving only a career in the shadows.

Thats what this call was about, a mitual and trusted friend had brought two men with purpose together even if up until now there had been but the briefest of calls.

His new boss beckoned and the whole world would open up for him.

Two hours later he was shown to a table in what was hopefully a better restaurant than it looked.

Acquiring Capital

"I took the liberty of ordering for you," I said as I shook William's hand in greeting. "Feel free to order anything else on the menu, my friend. I take it by your presence here that you're in?"

I paused and smiled at the young Asian waitress as she served William's chicken pad thai noodles, hot off the proverbial wok. I waited for William's response, and then resumed speaking as soon as she was out of earshot.

"By the way, that was the LAST time I'm ever gonna call you on your cell," I said. "I'll look into setting up secure land-lines for yourself, as well as everyone else in the business."

I paused again, as the pretty young Asian waitress came by to refill our drinks.

"As far as business is concerned, we need to do everything we can to maintain security and confidentiality. Because of this, everyone will be on a need-to-know-only basis. If you ever get interrogated by the cops or a rival family, even a lie detector test won't give you away."

I slid a flash drive towards William.

"We need some capital to fund our start-up business, and banks aren't about to loan us money -- not right away. I did some research and found that a certain megacorporation that contributes obscene amounts of money to the President is moving an equally obscene amount of cash from one of its banks to one of its subsidiaries -- all in one of its own, private armored transport vehicles."

I nodded towards the flash drive.

"The information you need for this operation is on that flash drive. It hooks up to your cell phone. Be careful, because the file has an encrypted virus that will destroy the file -- along with your cell phone -- moments after you speed-read through it. Do not attempt to copy, forward or print the file, because that will trigger the virus instantly."

I move a plain, brown paper bag from the seat next to me, and place it on the floor next to my feet. The bag held the pair of 9-millimeter pistols that I took off the cops earlier.

"Once you have eyes on target, try not to kill anyone. Don't worry too much about cleaning up after yourself. Just grab the inventory, do your best to not leave any more evidence than necessary, and get out as quickly as possible. The cops will be on the scene a lot quicker than you would normally expect; so, it's more important that you get away clean.

I'll be waiting for you at another location, where we'll trade vehicles. Then, I need you to double back and make sure no one's on our tail. After you make sure that we're away clean, I need you to meet me at this strip club around noon the next day."

I hand William a napkin with the strip club's logo.

"By the way, I have a present for you," I say as I slide the brown paper bag towards William. "Make sure you're packing when you meet me at the club tomorrow."

I paused to pay for the dinner bill, making sure to tip the pretty Asian waitress handsomely. I explained to her that it was my friend's idea to be generous to such a beautiful young woman, and that he expected to be a regular here. She smiled brightly at him, and then politely left.

"I think she likes you," I said, nodding my head towards the waitress.

This guy didn't mess around and most of what he'd heard reinforced his friends insitence that this was a man worth meeting.

Little flashes of alert signalled in his brian at different points of the conversation but they were most likely things that would resolve themselves in the fulness of time.

Williams eyes followed the young waitress as see walked away, he'd never banged an Asian before but the thought had crossed his mind maybe he might partake.

Turning back to his employer he smiled "You think , well I wouldn't turn her out of my bed if I had the change" William was a sexual creature he loved pussy the more the merrier as far as he was concerned. Equally he was very good at what he did and when he was working he had the ability to block all distractions of the flesh.

It didn't take a genuis to guess the corporation that he was being asked to target and William knew he was being given a giant hook to get involved in this operation that crossed the lines of what he'd always believed to be right and wrong.

Until he got screwed by the forces of right, now the line didn't seem such a big deal.

"The food here is very good as you promised " placing a piece of chicken in his mouth savouring the taste.

He looked at the flash drive, his foot moved over the package on the ground and with no one noticing he slide it to the wall so that it was truly out of sight not that anyone had noticed the exchange, he was certain of that.

The meal progressed and William ate it with a smile, it really was nice "Well it seems I have a busy day ahead of me so I best get myself moving"

William slipped his hand down the side of his chair touched the package and slipped it under his business jacket "Until tomorrow then" .

William shook the mans hand and left , on the way out he looked at the pretty waitress and she looked back.

As he walked out the door he casually glanced around the crowd looking but not seeing something that suggested he was being observed, his field craft was good but not great, he was used to being the hunter and not the prey.

Fourty minutes later he reached his apartment,it ws a shit hole but it was at least a place he could call his own...as long as he paid the rent.

He placed the flash dive into his cell phone a smile touched his face and then as the info continued the smile faded.

It was too easy and he hated easy , easy made him nervous.

Calling The Third

I watched William leave. I ordered a cup of espresso to while away some time after his departure. I didn't want anyone to spot both of us leaving the same place at the same time. Even though we just had lunch, I figured it would be wise to err on the side of caution. Besides, I haven't had espresso in a long, long time...

I walked back to my hotel room, and dialed another telephone number. No one answered, so I hung up without leaving a a message. I called a few more times, and then finally, someone picked up the phone. I immediately recognized the voice.

"I'm sorry for calling so late..." I said, audibly sighing as I realized how exhausted I was. "Are you busy right now? Do you have any plans for the evening?"

Coordinating With Adam

I made another telephone call to Adam, but this time I made sure to contact him on his land-line instead of his cell phone.

"Hey, carnal," I said as soon as Adam picked up the phone. "Can you talk?"

After getting the all-clear signal from Adam, I continued.

"You might want to be at this location by a certain time tomorrow," I said, giving him the exact time and location for William's operation. "I think it would be a good career move for you to be the first law enforcement officer on the scene after the incident. I'd feel more comfortable knowing that a competent detective such as yourself will be around to... "investigate" any evidence left behind..."

I was sure that Adam understood. I needed him to clean up any evidence left behind by William, and then to create an investigatory wild-goose chase for any cops who might arrive on the scene.

"By the way, do you know of this strip club?" I told Adam where to meet me and William after the operation.
