Background

The lands of Fanoria have for generations been a relatively peaceful place, with only minor skirmishes and battles, often quickly settled. Ruled over by Emperor Marthus I, a man rumored to be not only powerful, but immortal. Unbeknownst to most in the empire, their lands were only safe and peaceful thanks to the efforts of this great man. Everything seemed normal, perfect in the lands of Fanoria.

When a mysterious winter began to settle over the edges of the empire, creeping in from all directions toward the heart of Fanoria, the people were not immediately concerned, thinking it just an early coming of the seasons. But when changes began to come over the land, the once tall and majestic forests of the northern realms becoming dark and twisted places. Crops began to wilt and die, the grounds suddenly becoming infertile and dry.

The normal creatures of the land began to become sickly and diseased, sometimes rabid things. They've begun attacking people at random, spreading diseases, etc.

And then the actual winter came. Blizzards unlike the land has seen since before the time of Marthus, when the empire was still a group of small kingdoms battling constantly have swept in, killing plant and animal and person alike, showing no mercy and leaving in their wake three to four feet drifts of snow. Hale the size of grapefruit pelt the land, tearing through thatched roofs and battering people unlucky enough to be caught in the storm.

What is happening to Fanoria? A winter like this has never been seen in the time of the people who now live, even the eldest can not remember weather like what they are experiencing. Experienced hunters, rangers, druids, and other such wild people are bewildered by the animal life taking this bitter turn. And now strange occurances are being reported, people claiming that strange creatures and mysterious figures have been seen prowling the land, especially at night.

Are you brave enough to attempt to solve this mystery? Are you ready to journey into the cold dark and attempt to seize the truth and return Fanoria to it's former glory?

Characters[/center

This is a game based in a fantasy world. HOWEVER, this is not fantasy in the traditional sense. There are no elves, dwarves, etc, so please do not ask to play one. All characters are to be humans, and while they can have some special ability, do not push your luck. Magic does exist in this world, but as the average person hasn't been trained to use it(if they're even capable of wielding it in the first place), they will not be overly powerful/controlled.

Characters can take just about any role as long as they are common people, ranking no higher than perhaps the lowest of nobles, not even high enough to be land holders. You can be anything from a ranger to a farmer to a barkeep in a tavern, the choice is yours and the possibilities are endless.

If you are interested, please say so here. Do not, however, post character sheets here until I have an idea of what you plan to play and I give you the OK. I do not want people's character sheets to get lost in misc. posts here.

How about a young man who has lived out in the woodlands for several years, a druid type forest caretaker who is forced to learn to fight as winter settles in?

Sandine: I'm glad you think so. I have high hopes for where this story could go, and hope I get enough players to make it as big as I want. If you have any ideas for characters you'd like to play or ideas, please let me know.

Sploogin: Haven't seen you in a while. ;) The idea is good, I'll keep that in mind and possibly have you send me a character sheet in a bit.

I like this storyline. I was thinking of a girl who had either seen, or been attacked by one of the "mysterious figures". She is traumatized, but ends up finding strength from it and decides to seek them out? Perhaps heeding to her stupid bravery in an attempt to find out what has happened to Fanoria.

Not sure if I would apply
but when you say character sheet
do you mean like formal based character sheet I.E. d&D style sheet
or just basics?
are you running this as a guided freeform thread
with you as the game manager,
or do you plan to be a true Dungeon master
do you have the story planned out, or are you open to player suggestions

just questions I had before I threw in my hat or not.

Nefarious: I like that idea, but will have to go over with you(preferably in Private Messages) exactly what she saw, remembers, etc.. For obvious storyline reasons.

Gladiator: This is free form, and largely the story will go where the characters take it, with a bit of input from me to keep it at least close to what I have in mind. I do have a storyline planned out, but it is, in the manner of most of the DnD campaigns I've written, loosely planned and easily shifted so that I'm not left struggling to figure out how to deal with a situation.

And of course, I'm always open to player suggestions so long as they dont detract from the story at large.

The character sheets will be more traditional in style, not so much DnD as I'm not going by any set of rules and should look something like this:

Name:
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Hair:
Eyes:

Build/Looks:

Profession/Class:

Personality:

Background:

Next couple questions

are you playing a character
have you decided onwhat you are playing if so?

also
how do you handle clerics and deity worship, and from that, what god granted powers would someone have at his disposal?

Of course. I now don't have any specifics in mind, mainly because I don't know what you'd allow and not. So just let me know when you are ready to go over the details.

I'll mostly be handling npcs and the like, but if it calls for it, I may make up a character and jump in. This will likely only be if I see a place where one is needed, however.

Clerics in this game will not be traditional like you would think. Yes, they follow a holy order(no anti clerics, please, remember this place didn't really know the meaning of 'evil' before). They can have powers, largely along the healing side of magic, and that is likely how they became clerics in the first place and not just priests. Gods and dieties will not take a direct part in the game, and mention of them and their followers will be purely to add to the story to make the world seem more real and fleshed out. Therefor, there will be no 'god granted powers', though you may have your character believe that his abilities are a gift from god, they wont be any more special or powerful than anyone elses.

Nefarious, if you wouldn't mind PMing me with at least some of the provided character sheet layout filled out? Any ideas you have as to what she's seen/remembers, please feel free to add in and I'll help you edit from there.

Sploogin: you can go ahead and fill out a sheet as well, PM me with it first before you post it here though.

i had an idea for a character. should i post it here or Pm you about it first?
and as soon as i saw the words "D&D" and i grabbed me d20 and my inner nerd came out hahaha. lol.

lol. I would normally run things like this with a d20 system, but I think doing such in a forum manner detracts from game play, as you have to wait for rolls to be made and the like.

As for your character idea... its up to you. Dont post a sheet here, but if you want to just post the idea, thats fine. Otherwise, you can PM me with it.

okay that sounds good. i could post it so people will know, unless you want us to just post a 'mini character' intro thing. or w/e. but i'll probably just send you the whole sha-bang once i get everything pulled together.

excellent. i'll go put my dice bag away now. hahahaha.

I wanted to work up a clerical, or healer/herbalist character
what is the extent of the healing ability such a character would be granted I.E. magical healing beyond simple herbs?
and would such a character be exceptable?
let me know

Do you plan to play just a healer/herbalist, or a holy man with healing powers?

that's what I'm asking you
I wished to play a character that was foremost a healer/herbalist that could by the same token worship a god of healing.
and if so, I was asking what powers and how should I work that, or would you prefer to see just the healer/herbalist type character? and keep the magic/deity out of this?

I'll allow for a holy healer, probably believing he received his power from The One God(the most worshiped and primary deity in this setting) if you'd like to play one. His healing powers should be pretty strong, but one of the prices of having to use any magic in this game is how taxing they are on your body. It takes energy to wield this stuff, so while he can heal a minor cut or scratch no problem, bigger wounds would likely leave him feeling fatigued.

Due to the generally peaceful nature of the world before the coming of the winter, he wouldn't have used his powers too terribly often on things bigger than farming and hunting accidents, so he wont be overly powerful, able to heal a basic but rather large cut without it taking too big of a toll. I'll largely just determine what kind of state it leaves you on based on the situation and the wound in question.

kinda a raistlen maejer effect of using magic, but maybe not so drastic?

I'll take that, he would of course know traditional remadies as well. right?

Of course. Just because he has powers, doesn't mean that's the only thing he can do, lol. As for the system I'll use with wounds, I'll likely make a note for you in the game thread when a wound is discovered, inflicted, etc, as to how difficult to heal it would be. I'll use a 1-10 basis, with ten being the most difficult to heal, that way you can gauge whether or not he would think it worth it, in the present circumstance, to heal them that way or to use a traditional remedy.

I hate to ask you all those questions and not be able to give you a definitive yes or no, however if you are interested in having me, and would like me to send you a sheet, I do believe it might help to swing my vote towards yes.
:D

lol I'm certainly open to have a look at what you have in mind. Go ahead and send it.

Ah, I would love to join as an armoured knight, perhaps with a mace, and an axe, or an axe and a sword. I'm thinking about it. Male or female, whatever is necessary.

The only problem I see, is that you guys are night owls...

Rather than a knight, as they are considered a part of royalty and I want to keep this as focused on the 'common folk' as possible, would you consider something along the lines of a guard who simply is versed in the use of heavy armor and such weapons?

If so, then go ahead and send me your character sheet when you get the chance and I'll have a look at it.

I might be interested, but I guess I don't have enough references yet. What kind of military system are we talking about here? Just so I can get a clear idea about what you mean by heavily armoured guard.
