Summer 1996
“Look at this!” shouted a man as he sat at a table, looking over the morning’s New York Times. Across the table from him was a second man. Both were middle aged, at least in their early fifties, and had dark hair with strands of silver. They were almost exactly the same in height, though the man reading the paper had a noticeably more muscular body. His name was Erik Lensherr, and he had become good friends with the second man -- Charles Xavier -- many years prior. Due to the fact that they were both mutants, they formed their friendship almost instantly. Though they did have their differences in beliefs (Charles believed humans and mutants could coexist, but Erik believed that only one party would survive, that mutants would end up either killing the humans or being killed by them), they found a common ground to work on -- they both wanted to help other mutants.
Both becoming professors at Long Island University, they used the resources at their disposal to help create power sealing serums for children with uncontrollable abilities. Charles urged Erik to use the serum on his twin children, Pietro and Wanda, but he refused, wanting to teach them to use their powers. Eventually, Charles had agreed, and they had spent the last few years teaching mutants to use their abilities.
“I told you!” shouted Erik again, still looking at the paper. He turned the front page to Charles, and pointed at it with an irritated finger. “Look at this headline: More Children Around The World Infected With The Mutant Syndrome...”
“It would appear the majority of the people behind this paper are a bit fearful of things they do not understand,” replied Charles calmly. “They know not what they speak of, I’m afraid.”
“They’re not afraid!” spat Erik. “They’re disgusted! They label us as though we’re diseased or something! The Mutant Syndrome! It sounds like we’re infected with AIDS or something! How can you sit there so calmly while this is going on?! Show some emotion, dammit!”
“Erik, calm down,” Charles said, lightly relaxing Erik’s mind with his telepathy.
“Stay the hell out of my head!” Erik shouted, clamping his hands over his ears. “Don’t you dare take away my God-given freewill!”
“I’m sorry...” responded Charles.
Erik sighed, then sat down. “Me too... This just frustrates the hell out of me...”
“I know,” Charles said with a weak smile. “As does it frustrate me.”
~~~Three Weeks Later~~~
Charles and Erik were leaving the apartment they shared, and after hailing a cab, they headed for work. However, once they got to the lab, they found it was completely trashed. Desks splintered, chairs smashes, glass shattered. All their research, destroyed. All their records, shredded. The two argued for a few moments over who was responsible, but both were silenced as some sort of beast-man walked out from the back office, and glared at them. He was muscular, unshaven, and seemed to be covered in body hair. His eyes looked like that of a wild animal, and he appeared to be sniffing the air. Then, focusing on Charles and Erik, the man extended three claws from each arm, through the top of the hand, and growled ferociously at them before charging.
“Oh my god!” gasped Erik as the beast-man leapt through the air at them, and then came to a stop, floating there before them. Erik had a hand extended. “I can’t believe this! I’m sensing some sort of super metal throughout his entire body! I think it’s lining his skeleton!”
“What secrets do you hold, hmm?” Charles delved into the man’s mind, but found nothing but darkness and chaos. No thoughts of humanity existed anywhere near the surface of his mind, though a few painful memories did linger. “He’s been brainwashed... Reprogrammed to be a killing machine... I can’t pinpoint any solid memories, but I am sensing that he underwent a horrible ordeal... Someone experimented on him... Yes, as you said, someone lined his skeleton with... with adamantium, good god...”
“How on Earth did he survive such a procedure?” Erik asked.
“His mutation...” replied Charles. “His cells have regenerative capabilities beyond anything I’ve ever sensed... he could very well be older than both of us... And it seems he also has the instincts of an animal, heightened senses, and a greater degree of stamina...”
“Why would someone do this to him?” Erik wondered. “To make a super soldier?”
“Precisely,” Charles said after a moment. “And I just cracked the truth out of his deep thoughts... Erik, he was abducted by the United States Government... He was the part of an experiment to create a living weapon that could hunt down all mutants... I can’t tell what part of the government the agency is based under, but I did managed to get a name -- Weapon X.”
“They are going to hunt us all down and kill us like criminals...” Erik said in a calmed state of fury.
“Perhaps so, my friend,” replied Charles. “Perhaps so...”
Charles began to clear the man’s mind of the consuming thoughts of bloodshed, and helped him gain some level of stability. They could not figure out what his name was before the abduction, but he was referred to as Wolverine. Taking a normal name for himself as well, he began going by Logan. Soon after, Charles, Erik, Logan, and their mutant students fled the country, taking up refuge in an abandoned military base in Mexico. After some time, they secretly moved back to the States, creating a new underground headquarters in a deep cave under the northern Rocky Mountains.
“Erik, you and I both know this is not a good plan!” warned Charles as Erik prepared an army of mutant warriors. “Attacking Washington because they executed a mutant is not going to accomplish anything! Listen to me, Erik!”
“Enough!” he screamed back. “You are a worse nag than my last wife! Either come with me or shut up! And don’t call me by my human name... From now on, I am Magneto.” Suddenly, he laughed. “Trying to read my mind? Don’t bother -- this helmet I wear not only protects me from you, it also keeps Cerebro out of my head!”
“I swear that I will try to stop you with every last breath!” growled Charles.
“You will try!” Magneto growled back. They two engaged in battle, their powers clashing. Suddenly, a wave of magnetism slammed into the now bald Charles, and then a metal rod came up behind him, slamming into his spine. He fell to the floor in a cry of pain. He would never walk again.
“You monster!” sneered Logan as he came to Charles’ aid. “How could you strike down your friend like that!”
“You’re one to talk, Wolverine. He was becoming a pest...”
Giving one last look at Magneto, Logan threw Charles over his shoulder, and fled. He ran into Nick Fury of SHIELD, and Charles got the medical attention he needed. He was confined to a wheelchair from then on. They warned Fury about the attack on the capital, and before long, the Sentinels appeared. Ten foot tall droids specifically designed to hunt down and combat mutants. Charles and Logan went to help, but ended up being taken prisoner as well as many other mutants. Mutants, good and evil alike, were imprisoned in concentration camps in the far north. The people behind the operation were the same people that created the Sentinels -- Weapon X.
Logan acted as Charles’s bodyguard as he began mentally searching the minds of the fellow prisoners for those that would join him in pursuit of peace between humans and mutants. The first of these he found was a young man named Bobby Drake. His brother had turned him in as a mutant months prior. His mutation was mastery over ice.
Together, Charles, Logan, and Bobby rounded up a group of mutants in the camp that they felt capable enough to be part of the team.
OOC: Okay all, so post your characters in the OOC thread and then make a post in here about how you were captured and how you met my three good guys
. Or, make villains and tell how they met up with Magneto
